Many, many people took recreational drugs in the 90s. Where are they now?

I'm not a drug addict and none of my friends were at the time, we just took Es at the weekend, sometimes other drugs. We all went to work or college, seemed like everyone else did this too. We had a great time, weekends were for dancing and hugging, I didn't get on with drunk people and one night stands and it suited me much better.
I moved away from where I grew up, nice area to another nice area.
When I mention partying in my youth to other mums where I live now, they look at me as if I'm an addict who needs help Confused.
Are they all pretending? There were thousands of us doing this so where are they now? And why do people who never took drugs appear to feel so morally superior? One of the women where I live openly talks about cheating the system financially yet looks at me like I'm scum because I went out and had fun 20 years ago. (And probably once a year now!) I feel that because I mentioned this one evening in a pub I have alienated myself from the local mums.

Put me on the guest list for the masked rave

cloudchasing · 02/02/2017 21:49

To be fair I don't even care about being masked!

MumtoBelle · 02/02/2017 21:50

You never know, some of those mums might still be smoking a spliff when the babies are sleeping.

I still crave weed when DD(1) is in bed but too scared to call up my dealer in case of social services find out.

jeepersweepers · 02/02/2017 22:01

My friends and I were proper party animals at uni in the late '90s. E and speed every weekend at a club. Occasionally dropped acid or did coke. Rarely smoked weed though.

I remember sitting in a club, high as a kite, wondering to my friends about whether we'd ever outgrow it. We did but I have tinkered on three occasions in the past 20 years (as recently as 4 weeks ago!).

I've loved reading this thread. Another ex-raver (90's) and now respectable mother of 3. I had some great times! My DH and I were ravers in the same friend group and spent many nights at The Sanctuary in MK (Helter Skelter/Dreamscape) and went to festivals and World Dance raves. Had lots of fun, don't touch drugs now and haven't for many, many years. I wouldn't bring it up in conversation but if, like you OP, someone asked then I would have said the same as you! Grin

UnbornMortificado · 02/02/2017 22:08

I never went for illegal drugs.

I've talked about this before on her but I took a liking to prescription drugs and managed to put myself in a coma.

So I'm not in a position to judge anyone Grin

Headofthehive55 · 02/02/2017 22:43

I have never felt morally superior though, just rather puzzled why anyone would want them. Never felt the urge I guess!

I even disliked the morphine given to me during birth that I preferred to pain but drug free option the next twice.

Not at all keen on alcohol - hate the feeling of slight wooziness. Funny how you aren't really allowed not to actually like it!

Grittyshunts · 02/02/2017 22:46

No I get that headofthehive I hate the feeling of being "out of control" even being slightly tipsy. I'm completely tee-total these days, funny really. But I do get some funny looks when I'm the only one sober! Confused

Ruprecthepanbasher · 02/02/2017 22:47

Me too TheCakes I've been listening to The Tidy Boys for the past few weeks in the gym. Didn't realise I could run that fast!

Ah, those Friday and Saturday nights all those years ago. Like others have said, we were so thin from dancing for 8 hours straight!

Darthvadersmuuuum · 02/02/2017 22:54

I feel more afraid for our FC's exposure to formally legal highs. I wouldn't touch that shot with a barge pole!

CoteDAzur · 02/02/2017 22:56

" rather puzzled why anyone would want them"

Because they feel fantastic. And their effects last all night.

You get a bit of relaxation with a glass of wine, if that. Which is nothing compared to the incredible feeling you get from E, for example.

cloudchasing · 02/02/2017 22:59

For all of you that have never taken anything like that- and of course I'm not judging - the feeling of euphoria and love & kinship for your fellow man is like nothing else. No alcohol can touch it. That's why.

cloudchasing · 02/02/2017 23:00

I don't like booze personally. I'd rather have a cup of tea!

SugarLoveHeart · 02/02/2017 23:03

Is it not just something you do when you're young? I was mad fer it in my 20s & so were most of my mates. I lived in London & Paris in the 90s. That time of my life was certainly a rite of passage...

TheCakes · 02/02/2017 23:04

It's called Ecstasy for a reason....

goes back to my cup of tea

Headofthehive55 · 02/02/2017 23:05

I used to get funny comments when people realised I was driving home...people couldn't imagine I'd not drunk anything.

Darthvadersmuuuum · 02/02/2017 23:13

DC's and shit. See had bad wine is?

VocalDuck · 02/02/2017 23:15

Of my friends who took drugs, the ones who took the most are now in the highest paid and most respectable jobs with only two exceptions.

Darthvadersmuuuum · 02/02/2017 23:15

I'm down down your way in April *CoteDAzur• Grin

Headofthehive55 · 02/02/2017 23:28

Did you feel you needed it to feel fantastic? dId you need it to dance all night?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 02/02/2017 23:32

Didn't need it to feel fantastic

But it certainly made me feel more fantastic

Oh I do miss it

Ginsodden · 02/02/2017 23:34

Still do on occasion. Went to a rave on sat, danced till 5. Me and the 'crew' in our 40s and 50s. Still enjoy a cheeky disco biscuit once or twice a year. Rest of the time I am a responsible mother and professional :)
Wouldn't mention it at the school gates tho.

cloudchasing · 02/02/2017 23:41

No I raved for a good few years without taking anything, I just love dancing. But I also love the feeling of recreational drugs.

LittleLionMansMummy · 02/02/2017 23:45

A man at a drum and base night once gave me a hand massage while I was high on pills. Best massage I have ever had. I remember him saying "considering they do so much, we never pay enough attention to our hands". There was nothing pervy or sexual about it and he was a complete stranger. A fond memory.
