Many, many people took recreational drugs in the 90s. Where are they now?

I'm not a drug addict and none of my friends were at the time, we just took Es at the weekend, sometimes other drugs. We all went to work or college, seemed like everyone else did this too. We had a great time, weekends were for dancing and hugging, I didn't get on with drunk people and one night stands and it suited me much better.
I moved away from where I grew up, nice area to another nice area.
When I mention partying in my youth to other mums where I live now, they look at me as if I'm an addict who needs help Confused.
Are they all pretending? There were thousands of us doing this so where are they now? And why do people who never took drugs appear to feel so morally superior? One of the women where I live openly talks about cheating the system financially yet looks at me like I'm scum because I went out and had fun 20 years ago. (And probably once a year now!) I feel that because I mentioned this one evening in a pub I have alienated myself from the local mums.

But people telling you about their beautiful experiences on drugs is as dull as people telling you all about last night's dream, imo.

Crowdblundering · 02/02/2017 20:22

My son smoked weed for a bit when we was 17/18 but I was so non plussed and unbothered by it I think it frustrated him - I think the nail in the coffin for his drugs "career" was when my best mate rolled a joint and smoked it in the garage (she's smoked for years) and he went in there for a sly fag - totally lost its allure 😂

feeona123 · 02/02/2017 20:23

Hey! I was more 2000's but I never talk of those days with my mum friends...I doubt any of them were on that scene.

Met my husband in crasher many years ago in a loved up state. Loved those days but I'm very happy with some wine/cider in front on the TV now!

poorbuthappy · 02/02/2017 20:26

Yes we are about!
I have particular memories of the cross in kings cross and an horrific journey in on VE Memorial Day getting lost in London.

Chickenkatsu · 02/02/2017 20:26

I took E over a hundred times or so, I had to stop when I started getting weird infections. I think that it was screwing up my immune system.

I work in investment banking now and I don't really talk about it much, especially to parents from DC's school as I can't be bothered with their judging.

Miss having sex on it though.

CoteDAzur · 02/02/2017 20:26

"a similar afternoon of enlightenment! I decided I would never live in a house because it was too beautiful outside "

Brings back memories Grin

I remember sitting on a boat and watching the water with an incredible sense of serenity, SEEING the underlying currents that intersected to make the little waves in every direction.

On another occasion, I got to thinking about how languages and cultures were becoming more and more similar, and that differences would be lost some time in the future and there would only be one language and one culture.

Wine just isn't the same.

Chickenkatsu · 02/02/2017 20:34

"Wine just isn't the same."

For sure. I wish they could invent something like E but milder and legal. Alcohol causes so many problems, not least wife beating.

perhapsiwill · 02/02/2017 20:34

No wine is not the same but at least we can get to sleep and our jaw isn't stuck now Smile

Aren't we lucky to have a merciful veil drawn over our youthful antics though? I mean, I can laugh about that acid trip in 1991 where my friend and I were thrown out of a Spar at 6am for playing hide and seek in the aisles as we're the only ones who remember but nowadays it'd be on Instagram for all eternity Confused

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 02/02/2017 20:35

Night out clubbing feeling so much love knowing that you were going home to have sex for hours was great Halo isn't quite the same with alcohol and yes have had great sex sober too it's just different

One of my foundest memories is NYE in Thailand dancing on the beach to Sun Is Shinning as the sun came up I was thinking this is a moment in time and a group of us held hands smiling at each other apparently we all had the same thought at the same time Grin who started the thought isn't quite clear it didn't matter - I still think that it was a moment in time it seemed magical

CoteDAzur · 02/02/2017 20:38

"we're the only ones who remember but nowadays it'd be on Instagram for all eternity"

Oh God, yes. I am grateful every day that there was no Facebook back when I was partying.

StorminaBcup · 02/02/2017 20:39

Definitely! There isn't a snapchat filter in the world that'd make a gurner look good.

perhapsiwill · 02/02/2017 20:39

thrown out of a Spar at 6am for playing hide and seek in the aisles
Hahaha

We used to dare each other to walk down the road with the normal people then we would run back to each other and cry laughing.

Maybe you had to be there Confused

Getting into cars with lads scares me far more for my DC than drugs, my girls are far too prim and proper for that but recently 4 teens were killed instantly when their car hit a tree on a not particularly difficult road Sad

whatlifestylechoice · 02/02/2017 20:40

Another ex-raver/respectable mother here.

I miss drugs, we had so much fun. Everyone I used to take drugs with is now also a responsible mother/father/happily childless type with a career.

But if I had a free pass to spend one evening taking lots of lovely E and know that I would not harm myself because of it, I totally would.

These days I have to get my kicks by turning my music up slightly too loud and driving at exactly the speed limit, which is frankly, a bit sad.

psychoactive · 02/02/2017 20:47

I miss drugs too and it was only last weekend Hmm but am having a long long long break from them. Every time you take MDMA you give yourself the equivalent of a mild concussion, although I absolutely love the feeling overvthe following days of waiting for my brain to grow back. Also I'm 46 😳😀

shins · 02/02/2017 20:52

I love yiz though, you're all beautiful. I just feel like we're all, like, so close right now, just all together with everyone on the planet but it's just us really. D'you want some of my water?
chews frantically

Chickenkatsu · 02/02/2017 20:58

Hugs, I'm feeling so much better.

Bettydownthehall · 02/02/2017 21:08

Quite a few studies emerging about the positive effects of Ketamine and MDMA on depression and PTSD. Easy enough to google and quite convincing.

TheCakes · 02/02/2017 21:14

I listen to all the old anthems in the gym these days. On a really good cardio session, I sometimes wonder if half the buzz was the eight hours of dancing.
I reckon that's why everyone in their 40s is entering ridiculous physical endurance challenges - Tough Murder, Iron Man, 10k's etc. Still looking for the buzz but in a socially acceptable way.

Headofthehive55 · 02/02/2017 21:35

bibbity very middle class university circles here but don't know anyone who did take drugs!

cloudchasing · 02/02/2017 21:36

Another one of your people here. I was a raver from when I was about 17/18 and went to the Freedom To Party rally in Trafalgar Square 🙌🏻 Weirdly I didn't take anything then apart from Pro Plus and guarana - but then started taking E in about 1994 for a few years. It was an amazing time, and if I had it all again, I would take it earlier. There are a couple of tracks that I hear now, all these years later and still find myself coming up a tiny bit! Let Me Be Your Fantasy will always be the greatest dance track of all time for me.

God I miss drugs.

cloudchasing · 02/02/2017 21:38

By the way, if there's a MN race to be had, I'm there. 47 this year and I'd still be there til the lights come on Grin

cloudchasing · 02/02/2017 21:38

*rave, not race, obvs. I don't do running 😉

clumsyduck · 02/02/2017 21:40
