AIBU to think that people who don't have young children who park in parent and child spaces are selfish?

I was reading an article on the Daily Fail about a young couple with a baby who were left a note saying that parent and child spaces are for people with children (they were with their baby) but what annoyed me were people commenting under the article who were saying that they always park in parent and child even if there are other spaces available as they feel parents are entitled to too many things and why should they be inconvenienced by people having children. Is it me or is this totally selfish as the reason why those spaces are they are for the safety of the children, more space so other car doors aren't dented and closer to the store so it is generally safer for children and less likely for a child to be hit by a car. AIBU to think these people are selfish?

Yanbu.

Bettersleepoutdoors · 01/02/2017 21:43

Dawn please, do not wilfully misinterpret that comment

Sirzy · 01/02/2017 21:44

I don't get why pushing a pram through a car park is a risk at all. You presumably have hold of the pram and aren't leaving it behind a random car?

PurpleDaisies · 01/02/2017 21:44

Of course, everyone who uses a P&C space without having small children with them is horribly disabled and unable to find an allocated disabled space.
I don't believe that for one minute.

That's not the point at issue. I think it's pretty heartless to be grumpy that people with genuine disabilities might park somewhere where they can more easily get into and and out of their car.

Dawndonnaagain · 01/02/2017 21:46

I wasn't. But think it through. DD does do online shopping most of the time, but now and then she likes to get out, see what's about, get a bit of fresh air, just like everybody else.
For older people with disabilities they may not understand/be able to cope with internet shopping, they may not have access to a computer. It does happen.

Bettersleepoutdoors · 01/02/2017 21:47

meh.

Bettersleepoutdoors · 01/02/2017 21:47

Oh sorry. Not to you DD.

Dawndonnaagain · 01/02/2017 21:49

Better, thank you, have to say, it's the first thing that's made me laugh all day!

Bettersleepoutdoors · 01/02/2017 21:51

Every time I go shopping I see someone park in a P&C who doesnt need it. Either they're not even shopping in the place the space is meant for, or they've got their dog in the car or they CBA to to walk.
Should they be reported to the Police? No
Is this as bad as using a disabled space when not required? No
Does this mean I think that having a child is the same as being disabled? NO!
But it's thoughtless and selfish and I am thoroughly bored of the idea that it is neither of these things.

MycatsaPirate · 01/02/2017 21:52

Well this thread is just charming.

The op is clearly a gf.

There are disablist comments all over the place

And as usual, the usual fucking snowflake parents who can't bear the thought of their precious offspring having to be carried or walk across a car park because there are cars there.

Jesus wept.

Kjc105 · 01/02/2017 21:52

Well said @bettersleepoutdoors!

Lovely to see pretty much no names I recognise on this thread just along for the GF ride.

Bettersleepoutdoors · 01/02/2017 21:54

and Pirate your Snowflake comment is rude.

PurpleDaisies · 01/02/2017 21:54

meh

How can I possibly respond to such a devastatingly worded argument? The eloquence. The logic.

cherrycokehead · 01/02/2017 21:55

I really need the extra space as my stupid little car only has three doors so they're massive and stick out really far, I need to open them as wide as they go as I struggle to get 7 month old dd out of the back. I agree with the pp who said the spaces should be located further away, as it's the space that's needed and the distance from the store isn't really a problem. I asked the customer service lady in Tesco last week if there was any enforcement of the parking rules and she said they are soon going to be bringing in a system where cars that shouldn't be there will be photographed and the owners will be sent fines.

GF ride??

PurpleDaisies · 01/02/2017 22:00

GF is short for "goady fucker". It's a synonym for troll.

There's a list of acronyms somewhere on here.

Bettersleepoutdoors · 01/02/2017 22:00

Why do think that it is OK to say to me? A quiet mind
It's rude and uncalled for.

TresDesolee · 01/02/2017 22:02

Agree with better. Obviously anyone with mobility issues should use those spaces if they need them and anyone who has a go at them for doing so is an utter twat.

But having newborns or toddlers is difficult, especially in car parks. Not as difficult as having illness or mobility issues. But more difficult than being young and able bodied, or having a massive Chelsea tractor that you don't want to scratch.

People with babies and toddlers shouldn't be made to feel bad for asking for a teensy bit of consideration so long as they are categorically not doing so at the expense of people with disabilities or illness. Which most of the time they are not.

Mine are teenagers now but I found it hellishly difficult at times when I had a baby and a toddler. Those spaces definitely made my life easier at a time when getting out of the house and into a supermarket was the work of an entire morning.

Kjc105 · 01/02/2017 22:02

Haha that's great! Honestly felt incensed earlier at comments which I've explained enough about people admitting they use the spaces for revenge so not goading, just wanted to know I'm not the only person annoyed by this. Which I'm not. But I'll take GF 😂

cherrycokehead · 01/02/2017 22:03

I think calling Better a twat is really over the top rude and uncalled for!

TheChosen1 · 01/02/2017 22:04

Sirzy Yes, that is exactly why I see the benefit of p&c bays. They enable me to leave my pram behind a random car, whilst I rest the carseat on the roof and load explosives into the boot.

PurpleDaisies · 01/02/2017 22:04

Agree with better. Obviously anyone with mobility issues should use those spaces if they need them and anyone who has a go at them for doing so is an utter twat

That's not what better is saying. She is saying nobody except parents should park in those spaces.
