AIBU to think that people who don't have young children who park in parent and child spaces are selfish?

I was reading an article on the Daily Fail about a young couple with a baby who were left a note saying that parent and child spaces are for people with children (they were with their baby) but what annoyed me were people commenting under the article who were saying that they always park in parent and child even if there are other spaces available as they feel parents are entitled to too many things and why should they be inconvenienced by people having children. Is it me or is this totally selfish as the reason why those spaces are they are for the safety of the children, more space so other car doors aren't dented and closer to the store so it is generally safer for children and less likely for a child to be hit by a car. AIBU to think these people are selfish?

I could make a comment about driving a sensible sized car rather than an oversized monstrosity like the mums round here drive but I'll refrain.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 01/02/2017 18:58

I've just parked in one. I've got a knee injury and struggling to walk. Obviously I won't park in a disabled bay and I needed to be able to open the door fully and park as close as possible.

Sirzy · 01/02/2017 18:58

So you never go anywhere that doesn't have parent and child spaces then?

Catlady1976 · 01/02/2017 18:59

I agree op although I have no problem with pregnant ladies or blue badge holders or others with temporary disability. However these thread never end well. So good luck op.

Janey50 · 01/02/2017 19:04

Dawndonnaagain - What are BB spaces?

Strawberrybonbons16 · 01/02/2017 19:04

I'll never understand why people feel the need to park in them when they're childless, especially when there's normal spaces vacant, close to the entrance. Seems to be pure laziness. It's also annoying when people park in them and then leave their kids in the car Hmm or the kids are old enough to get in and out the car without requiring extra room. Yes they're courtesy spaces but they're so useful when getting a little one in and out. If you've not got kids and aren't disabled you don't need to use one.

rubberducker · 01/02/2017 19:04

I never get the attitude that is always trotted out on these threads that they are just a courtesy and not legally enforceable therefore we should stop moaning about people without kids using them.

So what if they're not legally enforceable - what is wrong with having a bit of courtesy?! Do those of you who park in them without kids let doors slam in people's faces too, or push to the front of queues?

I have no issue with disabled/elderly people using them obviously but often round here it's just idiots in fancy cars.

Janey50 · 01/02/2017 19:04

Sorry just twigged! Blue badge.

Soubriquet · 01/02/2017 19:04

"Why should I.."
"Why should I"

Always said by people who are entitled

Look OP the spaces are a courtesy. Use em if they are there. But don't start getting angry by others who choose to use them even if they don't have children

It's just a space

Kjc105 · 01/02/2017 19:05

Londonrach - how AIBU? I don't have a problem personally with BB holders using them but people who have problems with their knees who struggle to walk surely shouldn't be driving or should be dropped by the entrance?

OP posts:
Sirzy · 01/02/2017 19:07

I used them when I was on crutches for a long period with my knee. I also drove an automatic so I could carry on driving.

Spikeyball · 01/02/2017 19:07

Sometimes it's not safe to leave someone by the entrance.

MissCalamity · 01/02/2017 19:08

As gamerchick said, put them further away from the entrance, maybe with a walk way round the edge, so you're not cutting past parked cars. I bet they'd hardly be used by "people who don't need to use them"

Kjc105 · 01/02/2017 19:10

Sirzy - by other's logic, why should I be inconvenienced by someone who has a bad knee? It works both ways! I don't agree with that and don't have a problem with it but it's people who openly say they are able bodied but choose to use the spaces because they are closer to th store.

OP posts:
Sirzy · 01/02/2017 19:11

But you don't know why someone else is parking there. Even if you do they aren't legally enforacable so is it really worth getting wound up about?

If one is free use it, if not park elsewhere. It really doesn't need to be complicated or stressful.

Soubriquet · 01/02/2017 19:12

There's that "why should I" again

Mumzypopz · 01/02/2017 19:14

What do you think parents did before parent and child spaces, and before people took their baby seated in the car seat into the shop with them? They had to make do.

Then trolleys with baby seats were invented. So you just had to open the door a small bit, lean in the car and take your baby out of the car seat, carry it into the shop. No need to take such bulky car seats in with you. Baby went straight into green slopey seat in trolley. Plenty of room for shopping underneath.

If you read the small print of some supermarket signs, some supermarkets dictate that parent and child spaces are for children up to age 9!

I bet you can guarantee that more cars were dented when there weren't these spaces!!

OP posts:
Spikeyball · 01/02/2017 19:17

I think it is some parents getting arsey about who should park there that creates a lot of the resentment.

Sirzy · 01/02/2017 19:17

So I ask again do you only go to places which have p and c spaces then if you are unable to open a door safely?
