To think Jehovah's Witnesses can become a bit of an annoyance

There are two ladies that often come round our estate. There are many others that also come, but this particular couple are the ones who seem to call the most.
As I'm a SAHM I'm usually at home when they call. I would never be deliberately rude to them, but I'm getting a bit annoyed by them continually coming to my house. They know I've recently had a baby as the first time they came I was pregnant. They even turned up the day I went into labour and DH answered the door to them!

Last time I saw them they were hinting at coming inside to meet the baby. How on earth do I politely tell them I'm not interested? Some of the others who have been don't seem to take no for an answer!

I pretend to be foreign and unable to speak or understand English.

I remember yrs ago I moved into a rented house. The person who lived there before me must have always chatted to them as every Monday morn without fail they would chap the door. I had no clue about them or their beliefs at this point & just don't have it in me to be rude to anyone so I always answered the door & listened to their nonsense. One Monday I had just had enough. Seen them coming & cowardly grabbed my 3yr old & hid behind the door & told her to be quiet. To this day she's terrified of "the witnesses" Smile.

Ouriana no, I'm not talking shit because if you Google you will see for yourself. I have also seen several of these in the literature I was given when I studied with them. I stopped studying with them and binned the literature, but I can assure you the images are real. Try the older versions of the book "Revelations The Time Is At Hand".

It made me very sad as the grassroots JWs are a very sincere bunch, believing in preaching their Truth. It's higher up the ladder you go, you find that all is not what it appears. I didn't like the:

blood issue (not in scripture),
homophobia (Jesus said to love one another/love thy neighbour as thyself),
the child abuse within the society and rules on reporting it (speechless at this),
their rules on rape within the society and reporting it (as above),
disfellowshipping and shunning (a dreadful, wicked, divisive practice),
not partaking of Communion (directly going against Jesus' instruction),
your husband has the final word as head of the house,
the door to door ministry,
rules on dealing and reporting domestic violence,
rules on divorce,
rules on sex (yes, even the bedroom isn't safe from them),
strict meeting times and their dress code,
they ply you with so much reading material it becomes unmanageable very quickly,
and the constant talk of the "end times", which depressed me no end, yet it was something they pray for and hope will come quickly.

Their interpretation of scripture was extremely confusing to me, which led me to look to Google for clarity (which, according to the Watchtower Society, will lead one to fall back into "apostasy") as I was asking too many questions and not accepting the Truth.

my best friend put on a pair of bright purple flared trousers and the loudest red top he could find when he spotted them coming down the road. He proceeded to tell them he was gay and gave blood on a regular basis.

they never came back Grin

You should have a look at the ex-jw's forum I visit. They are a cult. I was in it for 32yrs. Anyone who tells you otherwise is brain dead or an apologist.

Yup, they take this v seriously. I have a second cousin who is a JW, but her husband isn't. JWs don't do Christmas, but since her husband told her she had to, their kids got to enjoy themselves nonetheless.

I don't have a lot of time for JW because a close friend left the church at 18 and was ostracised by the congregation including his father and brother. He is late 40s now and they refuse contact. It just seems very cruel and cult-like.

I would be firm, say simply "no" with a smile.then avoid. I don't necessarily answer the door when I am at home if it is clearly someone soliciting (old-fashioned word Grin ) and make no effort to hide. It is my front door and I decide when it opens.

They have stopped coming to our street, it seems they have adopted the standing with books/leaflets instead. Allegedly because members of the religion do not seem keen on doing the door knocking.

Not answering the door may be a rude but successful answer.

My first brush with JW occurred when I was 17 and a friend in school the year below me starting going out with an older man (he was 24 vs her 16) and he was a JW. Over the space of a year I watched her being converted - her family relationships breaking down completely as her parents were at a loss to deal with the changes in her. She was incredibly bright but they persuaded her that university was not needed (straight A student, school had hopes for Oxford). Her very close friends pushed away by her - at what seemed to be the insistence of her boyfriend. At the age of 18 she married him, worked in a local department store and was completely under his control. A lot of the boyfriends behaviour came undervinstruction from the elders. At the start I had many conversations with her where she was talking about her family not understanding and what the elders were telling her. I found it hard to understand why these people were saying such terrible things about her parents and siblings.
Still makes me sad when I think about it. Such a waste of a bright future.

FindoGask · 04/02/2017 19:56

I have always dealt with door-knocking JWs politely. They're not doing it to be annoying, they sincerely believe that if you're not a JW you are doomed to eternal damnation, hence it's a tenet of their religion that they have to convert others too. So basically it's a "not today thank you, but I'll take a Watchtower copy anyway", and everyone is, if not happy, then at least not upset.
