For one joyful moment, GingerIvy, I thought you meant the Kushners had condemned the ban. Then I read the article, which makes it clear it is awkward for the Kushners as the particular local Jewish community to which they belong seems mostly to condemn Trump's presidency.

yolofish · 02/02/2017 13:11

I dont know if this is true or not, but I heard today that the smart money is buying up boltholes in New Zealand - nice long way away, decent climate, lots of lamb to eat and nice wine.... unfortunately we cant afford to or else I'd be looking into it.

cozietoesie · 02/02/2017 13:12

Nowhere is 'a long way away' from a nuclear winter, I fear.

yeah you're right cozie sigh. Anyone read On The Beach by Neville Shute? published in the 50s I think, but really rather prescient it seems these days. Still, we live in sight of a nuclear power station, so if it all goes tits up am hoping DH, DDs and I will all be home.

I'd like to think they're not this stupid....but if they actually sign this, it will not be good..... the riots will be unreal...

The Daily Mail reports that Gorsuch founded a "Facism Forever" club while in high school. Quite disturbing if true.

Very interesting article.

cozietoesie · 02/02/2017 13:26

Lots of kite-flying in what is, essentially, a 'No Lose' situation for them, Ginger. They can say to conservative 'partners' - 'This is what we want and where we'll get to in the fullness of time' but then publicly deny everything, blaming dissent on [choose your epithet.]

GingerIvy · 02/02/2017 13:26

I have a bad feeling. Trump is right now in a National Prayer Meeting. (broadcast live on FB Hmm). Wanna bet the EO will be signed afterwards??

Lweji · 02/02/2017 13:27

Remember Jurassic Park?? You never had control of the dinosaurs!!!

I just needed an excuse to publish this. Mr small hands.

Read it and seen the movie, yolo.

M0stlyHet · 02/02/2017 13:31

The whole issue of religious freedom seems to be based on a totally screwed up (and totalitarian) misunderstanding of what is (or should) be meant by religious freedom.

In particular, I really can't get my head round the Holly Lobby ruling. Gorusch's position was based on religious freedom. Now abortion I just about get - there are religious people who genuinely believe abortion is murder (outnumbered I suspect by those who object because they are common or garden misogynists whose actual motivation is to restrict women's freedom). However, if you think that abortion is murder I can see why you would believe being forced to fund abortion was tantamount to being forced to be an accessory to murder. I don't agree but at least I can see the argument.

But with contraception as far as I know it's a private matter for the individual Catholic, between her and her confessor. Catholics are under no obligation to prevent other Catholics from using contraception, and certainly not under an obligation to stop non Catholics using contraception. It therefore isn't the company's business what particular medical services the individual employee chooses to avail themselves of, any more than a Teetotal managing director can tell an employee not to spend their salary on alcohol.

Gorusch's position therefore looks not like a defence of religious freedom but instead like a licence for the rich and powerful to impose their religious beliefs on the poor and vulnerable - the direct opposite of the intention of the constitution, surely (which was written by people fleeing religious persecution in their home countries, persecution carried out by governments/monarchs).

GingerIvy · 02/02/2017 13:33

If we're being pedantic - I misquoted. It's actually "You never had control! That's the illusion!" which of course still applies.

cozietoesie · 02/02/2017 13:37

As I've said, I think the Federalist Papers would bear some study if anyone has the time. (But I imagine that there's more than one lawyer looking at them as we speak.)

M0stlyHet · 02/02/2017 13:37

Just reading that New Yorker article. Re. the whole preppers thing - I suspect my workplace is close enough to a site of strategic significance that I'd be vapourized in the first wave. This may well be a good thing, since I don't have the money for an island off the NW coast of America or similar, defended with machine gun nests.

Lweji · 02/02/2017 13:41

About contraception and Catholics.

Recently, the Pope sacked a Religious Leader (Knights of Malta) for prohibiting condom distribution in certain settings.

What Neil Gorsuch’s old college newspaper columns say about him

M0stlyHet · 02/02/2017 13:46

Quite, Lweji. And the pope has also said that abortion is a sin which can be confessed to your parish priest like any other sin, rather than one so specially heinous you have to go to the bishop (which may seem like nitpicking and a meaningless distinction to non Catholics, but is actually a huge move towards liberalisation in the context of Vatican politics).

Read the draft of the 'religious freedom' order which basically OKs discrimination against LGBTQ and anyone who doesn't believe in the alt-right pro-life/anti-gay stance . First comes 'We will not defend you', how soon after will come 'We will attack you'? I'm beginning to fear we will end up with a version of Christian Sharia law.

Soon after the election my DH (who has a bit of the prepper mentality) was musing on how much food we'd need to pack, how much cash we'd need to take, and how to get to Canada by back roads with our caravan. I shook my head and laughed at him. It's not so funny anymore.
