I'm looking back with deep nostalgia to the 'Government in the Sunshine Act'.

You'll recall that its purpose was stated as:

Hmm, I'd be concerned about Pence or whoever's quietly lurking, maybe not part of the cabal but happy to take advantage.

Because the shock doctrine has many purposes. One is to destroy existing structures in a blitzkrieg, and take advantage of the stunned population to impose your own structures. (The EOs, the SCOTUS-packing, the arrogating of the Marshals to answer to the president not the law.)

But another is to create a situation so extreme that people will leap at a less extreme "solution", even though it's something they would have wholeheartedly rejected before the shock.

zebra I confess dh and I make short, very artsy films for fun. We tend to rope in friends to be on them and they just get shown at local short film nights. I am so wanting to make your film now though

My current vision is you in a dance studio in tutu and a zebra head. You dance while images of trump intercut and overlaid with dictators from history are projected on the walls and over you. At some point, as trump and bannon are shown you collapse against the bar clutching an ECG monitor strapped to your chest. The monitor line is shown on the wall...Or maybe starts printing out in long sheets that pile up on the floor showing broken and erratic lines. You slide to the floor elegantly.... Possibly there is some other stuff that happens....

Sigh...It will be beautiful...and moving...I shall call it 'The Broken Hearted Zebra'

Pausing If Trump and Bannon could be taken out of office, I think we could deal with Pence. And I think people would be ready to turn on him quickly if he was stupid enough to push his luck too far.

Seattle City Council committee will vote to divest and cancel $3 Billion contract with Wells Fargo for investing in the Dakota Access Pipeline.
If they pass this today, it will go to a full city council vote on Feb. 6th.
Seattle will be the first city in the country to cut ties with DAPL & wellfargo!!
In light of Trump's executive order, we need every city in the country to divest!
We have to put monetary sanctions on institutions that profit off destroying the earth, exploiting people, criminalizing the poor people, and perpetuating state violence.

amispartacus on the Boko Haram issue...Nigeria is 48% muslim, 48% christian and 4% animalist/atheist/other. So not majority muslim. Also BH hasn't killed any foreigners, certainly no reports of any westerners. Majority of their victims are people in 3 states, most are muslimsparticularly in Borno state. Also, Nigeria is an oil-producer (although declining volumes) and alot of the national wealth that has been looted is being stored in the West (mostly European off-shore accounts and London prime real estate). So it comes down to scale of BH terrorism and more important oil and money

Erm, which European country has 'thousands of years of democracy in their DNA?'

I'm pretty sure women only started getting the vote in Europe about 100 years ago - or don't women count as humans?

I know the 'enlightenment' took place in the 1700s, but America had slavery for decades after independence, and the civil rights movement didn't gain strength till the 1960's.
