Another article talking about the recent events, saying how they are deliberate and the start of a coup.

Catching up again

The Texan Mosque that was the victim of an arson attack? Well their local synagogue are letting them worship there (as in, have given them a key); and $900,000 (£717,000) has been raised so far for the rebuilding fund.

Thanks Zebra ^^ this has made a dark day much brighter!

Aw, little warm feeling for Senator Franken of my home state (MN) for blasting Session's record out of the water on the senate floor. (not that it'll matter to the GOP, but happy to see it)

That time Sen Al Franken proved Jeff Sessions to be lying about his record on his AG application about championing civil rights cases.

"Those who still refuse to take Trump seriously cite his incompetence for the rough start in office. Yet this blitzkrieg was intentional. "Get used to it. @POTUS is a man of action and impact ... Shock to the system. And he's just getting started" his counselor Kellyanne Conway tweeted Saturday.

As Conway implies, these first days of the Trump administration could be considered a prologue to a bigger drama, and one that reflects the thinking of Trump and Bannon alike. From their actions and pronouncements, we cannot exclude an intention to carry out a type of coup.

Many may raise their eyebrows at my use of this word, which brings to mind military juntas in faraway countries who use violence and the element of surprise to gain power. Our situation is different. Trump gained power legally but this week has provided many indications that his inner circle intends to shock or strike at the system, using the resulting spaces of chaos and flux to create a kind of government within the government: one beholden only to the chief executive.

"Strike at the enemy at a time and place or in a manner for which he is unprepared," reads one US Air Force formulation of the old military doctrine of surprise. Trump has long been an advocate of this tactic and complained various times during the campaign that our armed forces were far too transparent about their planned operations.

Yet Bannon is the mastermind of this takeover strategy as it's been adapted to the domestic realm. Well-versed in military tactics and the history of the radical left and right, Bannon has repeatedly talked about "destroying the state" in the name of securing power for "an insurgent, center-right populist movement that is virulently anti-establishment."

Besieging your targets until nothing makes any sense giving them no time to absorb or recover from attacks is a time-tested strategy in the history of war and authoritarian takeovers. One might cite what's gone on in Turkey under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

It's now being employed at the pinnacle of American democracy. It's particularly useful in situations where the leader is vulnerable due to possible investigations, blackmails or other circumstances that close off gradualist approaches to implementing an agenda. With all the emergencies going on, who is bothered at the moment about those Trump tax returns, or even his ties to Russia?"

Here is a transcript of President Trump's comments on Dr. Martin Luther King at his Black History Month gathering this morning.

.

"Last month we celebrated the life of Rev Martin Luther King Jr whose incredible example is unique in American history. You read all about Dr Martin Luther King a week ago when somebody said I took the statue out of my office. And it turned out that that was fake news. The statue is cherished. It's one of the favourite things - and we have some good ones. We have Lincoln, and we have Lincoln, and we have Dr Martin Luther King. And we have other. But they said the statue, the bust, of Dr Martin Luther King was taken out of the office. And it was never even touched. So I think it was a disgrace, but that's the way the press is. It's very unfortunate."

Seriously. THIS is what he said about Martin Luther King Jr. And managed once again, to make it all about Trump and "fake news" instead.

1 person made a mistake. I think Trump should be worried that people believed it so easily.

I wouldn't put it past them.
And yes, that's how I regard them.

I can't believe Trump actually said that inarticulate rubbish..

BigBadgers

Can I play myself? My fees are v reasonable... Failing that my friend Sarah Winter (was most recently in Endeavour, was in Versailles before that) could do it? (Not pure work-for-my-little-chum altruism, if it's arty & French there's a good chance I'd actually get to a ballet class; & unlike me she used to dance professionally. Not as daft as I am funny-looking, me... She's only a tiny bit taller - a little over a cm I think it is - than I am, & we weigh about the same. And our hair is even about the same colour at the moment, unless she's just dyed it for another role. Am not about to ask though, because I will sound like I have lost all grasp of reason in a Worrying Sort Of Way.)

Am now absolutely mentally writing a screenplay rather than emo!poetry... it is, naturally, The Best Screenplay. Ever. It will win all the awards. Everywhere. For everything. Even in categories that don't apply. THAT'S HOW GOOD IT WILL BE. And of course Trump will hate it, particularly because he will be intercut with footage of 20th century dictators. And things like "this is what he wanted for his inauguration" followed by footage of Soviet/N. Korean Massed Weaponry Displays, then "this is what he got" with the long shot of the lack of crowd & saddest-looking bits of parade - fully owning my bias, including that I'd not put the members of GSUSA who participated in. Girl Scoutz have been involved in inaugural events since 1917, and - while I shudder to think it - will have some members who voted for the creature, so they were in a difficult position, especially as they're an apolitical organisation. (They had plenty of current & former members REALLY angry about it though, which was cheering. Less cheering was reading their Social Issues FAQ page just now - I can see there's no way they can have a relationship with Planned Parenthood [I think that's terrible, but I can understand it] but the fact that they've a load of stuff about "don't worry, you're not giving any money to any foreigners; and we only belong to WAGGGS to be heard, don't worry, we won't implement any dumb foreign ideas here; and of COURSE your daughter doesn't have to wear a badge that says she belongs to a global organisation & symbolises the Promise & Law; that said Promise is 3-fold; a flame of friendship; a compass needle to guide her on the right path; a golden sun shining over all the people of the world; oh & the reason the circle at the edge of the badge isn't joined up is to leave room to grow"... HOW IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY COULD ANYONE OBJECT TO [THEIR DAUGHTER] WEARING THE WORLD BADGE?! How bloody STUPID & small-minded would you have to be to object to those values?! Especially as the FAQs have told you that it's GSUSA that is a member of WAGGGS, not the individual. My Brownies LOVE knowing they're part of something so much bigger - adore finding out about Guiding & Girl Scouting in other countries: WHY WOULD YOU DENY YOUR CHILD THAT?! )

And I REALLY need to do class to Dance Some Of This Out & I can't. I know. Poor me. It's ok, am rolling my own eyes at me HARD. And one of my cats (blond!cat) has just come & bopped me on the cheek with a paw. Walked over, looked at me hard, then BOP! Followed by sitting back, leaning his head into my knee, & purring ferociously. Right then...

Just another place where the orange has non-fans: Madeleine Moon MP said in Parliament on Monday,
"I was in Washington last week with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. While we were there, members of NATO, high officers of state in the United States, congressmen and senators took us to one side and said, 'Stand by us, because our values are under attack under this Administration.'"

I'm beginning to wonder if Pence would actually not be as bad as Trump. I'd originally thought he'd be even worse (even joked about him being Trump's human flak jacket since no lefty would want to take him out and be left with Pence!) but...
-Pence is a longstanding politician who I suspect probably has a modicum more respect for the constitution, judiciary and for general "rules" than Trump does. He's a religious nut, but I'm not convinced he's an anarchist who wants to throw all the rules and conventions out - he describes himself as being conservative before Republican.
-It seems like Bannon controls Trump, but there doesn't seem to be that relationship with Pence? If Trump wasn't there I don't think the raging white supremacist nutjob that is President Bannon would last long
-Voting record suggests Pence is pretty strongly in favour of free trade agreements, NAFTA, and so on which might mean some of the isolationism would be dialed down a notch or 5.
-From what I'm seeing (happy to be corrected) he's not super rich or as in the pockets of big business as Trump is (wouldn't be hard, frankly!)
-There are quite a few commentators questioning whether Trump might have Alzheimer's as he seems so unbalanced. If that is the case he's only going to get worse.
-Pence has all the charisma of a wet lettuce and really wouldn't appeal to moderates, floating voters etc; in other words I don't think he would inspire the same Trumpesque cult of personality when the next election comes around

Basically, Pence is a right wing anti-woman over religious fruitloop, but I'm not sure he's in the same wannabe dictator box as Trump.
