I'm relatively new here. Are we allowed to mention a Portuguese Supreme Court ruling today about a missing British child in Praia da Luz.

If anyone wants some lolz and banter there's a "I found a random shopping list in a trolley, what can we deduce about the writer?" thread => thataway and over

meltownmary · 31/01/2017 23:39

Actually Thats,

don't see any reference to deceased children here.

Looool, good luck with that. Just seen the headline and not had a chance to read any of the replies but amazed to see it still standing even after a HQ comment. Smile
off to read the thread now and hope it doesn't go poof in the meantime

glitterazi · 01/02/2017 00:10

This place is indeed nuts.

mycatwantstokillme1 · 01/02/2017 08:49

I now know how to check a poster's previous. As if I could be fekkin bothered. Why? Honestly. Some people have too much time on their hands or are on a mission to do this. Sad if I may say so.

It might seem sad but as I said earlier I found some amazing threads by doing this, about some amazing courageous women who fought terminal illness and they brought tears to my eyes and restored my faith in humanity - the love and support on those threads were wonderful.

Sorry if I've derailed again but I take a bit of offence about being called sad for doing this - I'm glad I read them.

conserveisposhforjam · 01/02/2017 21:12

I think many of you are as mad as myself and I like that.

No I'd say that was fairly fucking unlikely...

In response to the OP - we should be able to yes as it is a current news story but it seems as if the thread has been deliberately derailed so it won't be.

I think this is an important story as there seems to uncertainty on whether or not the legal fees for the libel claim will be paid out of the fund to find the missing child that the public donated to.

It's also an interesting test case in terms of someone who is suspected of, but not charged, with a crime suing the Chief Investigating Officer of the case for libel. He was not just a random off the street. Amaral was reportedly taken off the case due to a dispute with UK officers, IIRC, but his book states the conclusion that the Portugese Police also came to IIRC (disclaimer just in case that's incorrect). There was a lot of publicity after the book was published about an investigation into, and later conviction of, him covering up the assault of a murder suspect by his officers although the officers actually accused of the assault were acquitted which is also quite discombobulating. The assault took place in 2003 I think but charge was brought in 2009.

Lots of xenophobic comments in the Daily Fail about how 'incompetent, corrupt' Portugese courts look after their own and the outcome would have been different in a UK court. Ho hum.

So many confusing aspects of this case which is also why it grabs people's attention.

BillSykesDog · 02/02/2017 00:16

Did think it was v interesting that a feelgood story about a choir KM has a very tenuous connection suddenly appeared in the media today but hey ho.

And I wish MN would get rid of that annoying standard thing they always put on MM threads and admit they just don't want a letter off Carter Fuck.

BillSykesDog · 02/02/2017 00:17

And LadyHelen that's not very likely as the Mail's comment pages are solidly anti McCann

DioneTheDiabolist · 02/02/2017 00:37

Haven't RTFT, but is this about Orwell's 1984 selling millions? Apparently demand is so high it's going to reprint.Shock I'm seriously considering buying a copy and checking it against my old one.

Barbie222 · 02/02/2017 07:25

Yes absolutely Lady Helen.
Bill Sykes - that wasn't always the case with comments in the Mail. I see now that most of the papers have switched their comments off since Tuesday.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 02/02/2017 07:54

I'm surprised any of them had the comments turned on to start with.

Also not sure the thread was derailed. I don't think it's actually been on the rails at all.

RedHelenB · 02/02/2017 08:20

LadyHelen - the MaCanns never said that the fund would only pay out for searching for Maddie so yes, I fully expect that it will be used to pay the legal costs. I think they will be a lot slower off the mark in pursuing libel claims now. I keep thinking about Ben Needham and think a similar story may well come out in years to come about Maddie.

I do wonder why they never did the timeline/reconstruction when they werre in Portugal though.

BillSykesDog · 02/02/2017 15:44

Barbie, that's not true. I read the comments yesterday before they were deleted and they were, as normal, very anti-McCann with the occasional heavily read arrowed pro-McCann comment. DM comments are always vastly anti-McCann.

RedHelen, they might not have explicitly said it was only for searching for Madeleine, but they certainly gave that impression.

WannaBe · 02/02/2017 15:52

After almost ten years I wouldn't imagine there's much left in the fund any more? After all it wasn't just used to find the child but also to cover living expenses, mortgage payments etc iirc.

It's interesting that this has only really been reported in the tabloid press though rather than the mainstream media, but it does beg the question whether more open discussion of the case will follow. As things currently stand discussion is routinely shut down, and not just talking about general judgemental comments but about discussion in general.

BillSykesDog · 02/02/2017 15:54

Wanna KM has had a book out raising funds in the last few years.
