Fucking hell, been busy most of the day so only got to catch up now - found myself explaining to DD that America has crazy men in charge.

It's the economy stupid...

Stocks post worst trading day of 2017 after Trump immigration debacle

www.cnbc.com/2017/01/30/us-markets.html

"""I think it also has to do with what the immigration policy represents [in terms of] the way the Trump administration is going to operate," said John Conlon, chief investment officer at People's United Wealth Management. "The fact is that you've got a major policy that was implemented very quickly. That's causing uncertainty."

The order sparked outrage as thousands took to the streets across the U.S. in protest. Several world and corporate leaders also condemned the order. On Saturday, a federal judge issued an emergency stay to halt the deportation of people with valid visas who landed in the U.S.

"The Trump worries are now beginning to set in," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at First Standard Financial. "We're having this ongoing worry effect that could overtake earnings and economic data."

Thanks @squishysquirmy I decided I'd go back and look at the rosneft info. Probably best not to in the long run lol. Again you're right so much conjecture. If I understood all of it it might be better but the more you go into it the weirder it gets. I'll stick to the obvious bits I think. So I'll step away now and curl up with a good book tonight!

If Gorsuch is the Supreme Court choice TBH we have to be thankful for small mercies. There was a FAR worse choice in the running

PausingFlatly · 31/01/2017 20:27

I mentioned previously that Yonatan Zunger, whose article "Trial Balloon for a Coup" has been much linked here, has written another article "What 'Things Going Wrong' Can Look Like".

It's about who he sees as the target groups of the Trump regime: muslims, latinos, black, and trans people (though I suspect the same will be brought to bear on LGB as well).

He explains why each group would be chosen - different for each - and how they would be targetted.

For black people, it basically comes down to same old same old.

For trans people,
Direct pressure against the trans community is also likely to follow a schedule of political expediency; since, unlike Latinos or Muslims, trans folk aren’t a particular target of the campaign, they’ll instead be targeted whenever it’s useful, e.g. to rouse up support from the sort of nasty evangelicals who do see them as particular targets when they’re needed for either a political campaign or to back some other thing.

The detailed rumours about the anti-LGBT EO (now rumoured shelved) fitted that mould. (Of course, the rumours might be false top to bottom, so not really much to go on there.)

Enda Kenny not, tbh, showing much more spine than May:

Pardon me re the Supreme Court judge. That's the leaked rumour that it's Gorsuch, from a couple news media people. Not confirmed.

Don't feel bad spaced, I have been corrected a few times because i have misread things or made assumptions (I work in UK local gov and so its easy to make assumptions about how things work when actually they are vastly different in the states). I like these threads because if I am not sure about something I can chuck it up here and ask what people think. Usually someone with more experience will tell me if I am wrong. It is great for fact checking! :o

Pregnancy insomnia is the pits. You have my sympathy. Do post things here if you are awake and bored though :)

I don't think Enda Jenny will rock the boat, too much at stake with US investment in Ireland. He might even hold hands with Trump if necessary.

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 20:53

I wanted to highlight this bit from the washington post article linked by a pp:

'The Trump administration is considering a plan to weed out would-be immigrants who are likely to require public assistance, as well as to deport — when possible — immigrants already living in the United States who depend on taxpayer help, according to a draft executive order obtained by The Washington Post.'

www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/trump-administration-circulates-more-draft-immigration-restrictions-focusing-on-protecting-us-jobs/2017/01/31/38529236-e741-11e6-80c2-30e57e57e05d_story.html?tid=sm_tw&utm_term=.cefa02698481

It hasnt been confirmed if this will go through, but if it does it is basically allowing the rounding up of immigrants we have been talking about being the next step for the past few threads. Bloody hell!

amispartacus · 31/01/2017 20:54

I do wonder how this week has gone down in mainly Muslim countries? What is being said?
What reactions will there be?

Well, that's where the danger is....There might be a few Muslims in the millions of American Muslims who might be radicalised. So you can't be too careful - and you want to keep America safe. Slippery slope.
