Ooh this has thrown a bit of a spanner in the works! Trump didn't realise Bannon has to be approved by the Senate...Grin

Stuffofawesome · 31/01/2017 15:06

Glimmer of hope re:Bannon. Though found the ad for 'women who always say yes #getnaughty' pretty shitty

Destinysdaughter · 31/01/2017 15:06

Good article on what are the elements of fascism, parallels with Tump regime.

ZebraOwl · 31/01/2017 15:22

There's a date set for the debate on the anti-Trump petition: 20th February.

cozietoesie · 31/01/2017 15:22

It's never a good idea to move/allow yourself to be moved too quickly in such circles. Wink

amispartacus · 31/01/2017 15:27

On Twitter - I don't get what people think they will achieve by insulting people with different views.

Use facts or arguments. But insults?

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 15:27

Could this lead to the break up of the United States?

California now looking to leave the US, so it certainly looks that way. The USA could cease to be United.

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 15:28

Though how realistic that I actually is I don't know....

cozietoesie · 31/01/2017 15:31

The 6th largest economy in the world they're saying.

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 15:31

How do you think bannon will get around the senate hearing? I am thinking either they will just refuse to acknowledge it is required or find a way to change that requirement.

cozietoesie · 31/01/2017 15:32

But if it was Texas...........?

Lweji · 31/01/2017 15:32

Use facts or arguments. But insults?

That's what Trump did.

Remember Lying Ted? Crooked Hillary?

PausingFlatly · 31/01/2017 15:46

('Scuse me repeating my post from the Westminsterenders thread.)

Today, Policy Exchange has launched the report Jo Cox MP was working on when she was murdered: "The Cost of Doing Nothing: The Price of Inaction in the Face of Mass Atrocities"

"There are few more complex questions than when to intervene overseas. Jo Cox was an inspirational humanitarian who cared deeply about preventing violence and protecting people around the world. It is a fitting part of Jo’s legacy that this paper will challenge politicians of all parties to consider how we can put such considerations at the heart of the decisions we take." (Rt Hon Theresa May MP, Prime Minister)

While the brexit debate now going on I thought you all might be interested in this list of how mps are likely to vote

Destinysdaughter · 31/01/2017 16:00

brasty yes that is a good article. So good it's now been posted on this thread 4 times! Grin

( still worth repeating in case pp haven't read it )

space83 · 31/01/2017 16:00

@RedToothBrush oh I never said fair and free election - it's doubtful whether he'll make it to the next deadline (either fair means or foul). Although it was interesting to note that he filed for candidacy 2020 - thus meaning can accept donations for campaigning now. Massively optimistic of him wasn't it?

WokeUpLikeThis · 31/01/2017 16:11

I have been lurking on this brilliant thread and wanted to come on thank the posters who have done a great job of keeping us informed. However, I've had to name change so I can respond to the post below by space83. She has added 3 and 3 and got 563252.

But....just thought this might be interesting (pregnancy insomnia so was up a lot of last night getting kicked from the inside out) and I will find the link... Russian petroleum firm Rosneft has a new mysterious 19.5% shareholder - filtered through no less than 15 shell companies - now it's amazingly coincidental that Rosneft shares were proffered at 19% to the Trump dynasty in return for easing of sanctions to Russia. Usually a 5% brokerage fee is added to trade deals like this... It's doubtful that it can be tied directly to Trump but I'm assuming (and it may be a big assumption here) that there will eventually be a trail to the lovely Kushner who already has known links to Russian firms and oligarchs. Of course a conspiracy theory is a conspiracy theory but it's interesting to note, no? And under the terms of constitutional law proceeds from foreign governments can be used as grounds for impeachment. But, you know, proof.

I have no idea what Trump's involvement with Russia is on other matters, but I can categorically say that what space83 has written is completely utter rubbish. The US were not involved in the Rosnet deal, nor was Trump or Kushner or any other of Trump's cronies. I know this for a fact. You simply have to read the reporting of the deal by financial journalists throughout December 2016 and the Stock Exchange announcement to see who the people behind the deal are and why Russia needed this deal to go through.

WokeUpLikeThis · 31/01/2017 16:14

space thinks she is adding to the conversation, however, what she is doing is exactly what we are accusing Trump supporters of - peddling lies to suit their agenda. We have to be better than them. This is too important.

Deejoda · 31/01/2017 16:15

* Trump didn't realise Bannon has to be approved by the Senate...grin*

Deejoda · 31/01/2017 16:17

Oops pressed post too early. The above says it all really. Incompetent right wingers running one of the most powerful countries. I despair!

Peregrina · 31/01/2017 16:24

Won't the Senate just nod the approval through? Anglo-Saxon politicians on both sides of the Atlantic seem to have forgotten that they once had principles and have a duty to do what is for the good of their respective countries.

woman12345 · 31/01/2017 16:29

PausingFlatly Hope Policy Exchange report gets publicity it deserves, and also today here sister is launching a commission to tackle loneliness. nwww.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-38808665
Sounds a bit irrelevant but Hannah Arendt's book on Totalitarianism addresses isolation and alienation as key factor in the rise of fascistic movements.
Jo Cox's family should be proud of her.

cozietoesie · 31/01/2017 16:31

I suspect that much will depend on who has antagonised whom - on either side of the divide. There's a great deal of water to flow under this bridge yet.
