Zebra

Russia gets Ukraine back. Sorry.

PausingFlatly · 31/01/2017 12:57

Wouldn't it be marvellous if the Senate asked Jeff Sessions in his confirmation hearings, exactly the same question he asked Sally Yates during hers?

"Do you think the Attorney General has a responsibility to say No to the President if he asks for something that's improper?"

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 12:57

And in other news...mps have begun the debate on the brexit bill

The US is to deploy tanks to Estonia

Who is controlling the army?

And which side are they on?!

And another good indication of why Trump might use the police as his preferred military force

cozie

I know that really... Do you think he's after the whole of the former USSR?

ZebraOwl · 31/01/2017 12:58

(That wasn't an impatient!sigh, I hasten to add. It was a sad one.)

Oh look, someone has started a petition saying trump should be allowed a state visit to counter the petition sharing he shouldn't

cozietoesie · 31/01/2017 13:01

I 'think' they'll pick up whatever is going/makes strategic sense. Ukraine, though, is pretty well non-negotiable. Sorry, Zebra.

merrymouse · 31/01/2017 13:07

It's almost funny.

Obama: people from countries with visa waivers who have visited a list of 7 countries now need a visa.

Trump: Anybody from those countries, whether a green card holder on holiday, a British MP or a knight of the British Empire can't enter the US. Justification - I found a list that Obama made.

(I know some of this has since changed, but Trump was the spanner/evil villain who signed the paperwork).

He really can't tell the difference between current events that indicate that increased vetting is necessary and somebody just being from Syria.

The ban sounded stupid before, but the more he tries to explain it the more stupid he sounds.

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 13:09

The anti-anti-trump petition has now hit the 100,000 signitures to qualify for debate. Could be an interesting session.

merrymouse · 31/01/2017 13:11

Would have been good to check for typos before starting that petition.

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 13:11

Here is the text on the petition:

"Donald Trump should be invited to make an official State Visit because he is the leader of a free world and U.K. is a country that supports free speech and does not believe that people that appose our point of view should be gagged."

I don't think he is quite leader of a world yet...Last time i looked he just had America, though things are moving fast. Confused

merrymouse · 31/01/2017 13:19

Problem with the pro Trump petition is that nobody has argued that he shouldn't be allowed to enter the UK.

I think we all know that Theresa is going to have to pull some kind of visit together (although can't imagine what the situation will be like in 6 month's time). It's still going to be a fiasco for all reasons previously noted.

There is rolling out the red carpet and then there is sneeking somebody in round the back and Trump's only option will be the latter, even if he does get to meet the Queen.

cozietoesie · 31/01/2017 13:19

I seem to recall that China has tabled its claim to be the 'global leader'?

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 13:21

It will be interesting to see the geographical breakdown of the pro-trump vs anti-trump petitions and whether they match up with the pro and anti-brexit areas.

brasty · 31/01/2017 13:22

Approximately 3.5% of the adult population of the UK have signed the petition calling for a ban on a Trump state visit. And the petition is increasing all the time. That is actually a substantial number of people. Of course not all will attend protests, but if there is a state visit, I would expect substantial protests.

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 13:23

I agree merry. The problem with the petition is that nobody is trying to gag trump. He can come and talk all he wants, we just shouldn't be forced to listen or be seen to support his rhetoric.

brasty · 31/01/2017 13:24

BigBadgers you can look at who has signed the petitions on the map. Although in more conservative areas less have signed against Trump and more for, it is actually overall quite evenly spread. Far more than I was expecting.

Chippednailvarnishing · 31/01/2017 13:24

This Michael Rosen poem keeps popping up on my twitter feed, he's been my favourite poet since he visited my school back in 1985;

Fascism: I sometimes fear...

I sometimes fear that
people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress
worn by grotesques and monsters
as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis.

Fascism arrives as your friend.
It will restore your honour,
make you feel proud,
protect your house,
give you a job,
clean up the neighbourhood,
remind you of how great you once were,
clear out the venal and the corrupt,
remove anything you feel is unlike you...

It doesn't walk in saying,
"Our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution."

ZebraOwl · 31/01/2017 13:48

I suspect you're right cozie...

(Have just been away annoying a fundie who was attacking JKRowling on Twitter to cheer myself up. I was nice, and scrupulously polite, obviously. [Well, would be breaking the Guide Law to be otherwise...] They don't do very well with that. They also don't seem to like facts. I sense a theme...)
