Re. the Washington Post - after Trump's election, I decided I needed to "step outside the echo chamber" so took out a subscription to the Telegraph. It comes with free access to the Washington Post. Pretty good for 8 quid a month.

Yes, the Torygraph carries opinion pieces by UKIP politicians and supporters - but, sadly, I need to acknowledge that these people exist and know what they're saying. Know your enemy. They also carry some good stuff. Rape apologists like Allison Pearson aside, I've actually been pleasantly surprised by a lot of their coverage of women's rights.

ZebraOwl · 31/01/2017 12:31

Mood-lightener from Twitter:

"LOVE: Norwegian newspaper: "Who'd you bring if stranded on an island ?" Man "I'd take one for the team: Trump" 😂"

PausingFlatly · 31/01/2017 12:31

CaveMum you might find something useful here:
www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2017/01/29/trumps-facile-claim-that-his-refugee-policy-is-similar-to-obama-in-2011/?utm_term=.c5d98239ab81

I'm also out of Washington Post views so haven't been able to check it myself. (I'm going to have give them actual money, aren't I?)

But maybe a calm list of "Obama didn't XYZ, so I didn't see anything to protest about."

Has anyone noticed if Trump has taken to wearing red boots? AFAIK that is one of the critical warning signs?

Lweji · 31/01/2017 12:36

And I definitely can't see Putin on MN, but am greatly enjoying the idea of him setting up a sparkly ticker... (Sorry, I know that's not at all what you meant...)

I meant both. Grin It was written as a joke.

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 12:36

cave this whataboutery had been talked about in this thread a few times. My responses are

  • 2 wrongs do not make a right
  • Obama's ban was completely different to trump's and was widely criticised at the time
  • just because someone else borrowed their mums car without asking doesn't mean it is OK for me to steal it. What trump has done is wrong and the fact that other people have done inadvisable things does not change that fact

Alternatively you can just ask him very politely why that is relevant to the discussion on trump's actions and could be keep to the point please Grin

squishysquirmy · 31/01/2017 12:36

"Which Roman leader is Trump, though?"

Before he won, I thought he was Cataline, but my knowledge of Roman history is pretty limited.

"When Stalin died, people were too scared to admit it:
In his latter years Stalin’s health had deteriorated and towards the end of 1952 he suffered several blackouts and losses of memory. His sense of paranoia had reached absurd proportions. “I’m finished”, he said in his final days, “I don’t even trust myself.”

Stalin was almost nocturnal, often going to bed in the early hours, obliging his Politburo colleagues to do likewise, and rising around noon. But on 1 March 1953, there was no sign of life all day at the great man’s dacha. His personal staff although increasingly concerned were too fearful to check up on him. Finally, at 11 p.m. they did.

They found Stalin lying on the floor, unconscious and his pyjama bottoms soaked in urine. They rang Lavrentii Beria, Stalin’s Chief of Police, who arrived and bellowed at the staff, “Can’t you see Comrade Stalin is deeply asleep. Get out of here and don’t wake him up.”

But Stalin had suffered a severe stroke. Finally, next morning, on Beria’s orders, a team of doctors arrived, but by then Stalin had been left unattended for twelve hours since the stroke"

The orange one's passing is going to have to be handled carefully, do the 'people' love Pence as much?.

I'm a lefty, but I quite like the Telegraph, actually. Particularly Alex and Matt.

I often leave comments and they get people from all sides.

I am not sure if this has been posted but the BBC have quite a good article on whether the ban is legal and the different ways it could be challenged

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-38766364

Peregrina · 31/01/2017 12:43

I tend to agree about the Telegraph - outside its rabid editorials and its letters page, it tends to have balanced articles. It can be particularly good on science issues.

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 12:43

I agree that though I often disagree with the views and politics of the telegraph I feel it is generally a sound news source that makes an effort to report actual true facts. As such I respect it even when I want to give it a bit of a kicking.

Lweji · 31/01/2017 12:44

They are not wrong.

Thanks folks!

meltownmary · 31/01/2017 12:45

Rumours of Trump's impending demise are greatly exaggerated I fear.

ZebraOwl · 31/01/2017 12:47

CaveMum

There is a comprehensive comparison of the Obama policy & the Trump ban available here: www.google.co.uk/amp/amp.usatoday.com/story/97247418/?client=safari

Destinysdaughter · 31/01/2017 12:47

Lweji great cartoon!Grin

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 12:49

His demise would only give those behind him a boost anyway. This isn't a one man show. There has to be something that takes down trump and his entire cabal or it will just make things worse.

Destinysdaughter · 31/01/2017 12:51

Great photos of some of the placards from UK protests!

ZebraOwl · 31/01/2017 12:53

Lweji
That's ok then: I was worried Utter Frivolity might seem inappropriate at that point.

I wonder what his tickers would be FOR. I bet he'd have ones like "days since I last wrestled a bear" & "days since I last led my ice-hockey team to resounding victory"... Tries not to think about all the scary world domination ones & ones to do with Ukraine etc. Sorry Ukraine. It's not I don't care. It upsets the cats when I cry though.

Sausagema · 31/01/2017 12:54

My favourite was in Glasgow where it simply read: None of this shite!

Indeed.

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 12:54

On the subject of trump's mental health. If he really does have dementia and is being strung along and used that is a genuinely horrible thing. I volunteer with people with dementia and I do see the comparison, though I avoid armchair diagnostics, and the thought of someone abusing one of them like that is very upsetting but all too plausible.

merrymouse · 31/01/2017 12:55

Telegraph also has Michael Deacon as political sketch writer. He is brilliant.
