America is really in the grips of a dictatorship isn't it? Sad

Chippednailvarnishing · 31/01/2017 07:49

I do think this is an exercise in distraction by Trump...

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 08:03

it is also not the ban on its own that is so concerning. If that was the only thing he had done I would think he was an idiot. Add to that the business with the NSC, all the other EO, starting fights with Mexico, ignoring the judiciary and now firing the attorney general and you have serious stuff going on. This is not a single worrying decision, this is a tsunami of crazy.

Also, a visit by Trump in the summer would mean that the papers are full of his comments about Diana at the same time that they are all running pieces on the 20th anniversary of her death.

I am not a royalist, but as far as I understand William and Harry do want to commemorate their mother and it's difficult to see how a Trump visit wouldn't overshadow this.

Lweji · 31/01/2017 08:13

To spell it out, this could be the end of NATO.
Never mind his "commitment".

Guess who'd be happy?

Lweji · 31/01/2017 08:19

From that blog:

"Do protest, but be very wary of going home feeling like you’ve done your job. You haven’t."

This is bigger that protests on the street.

ghostyslovesheets · 31/01/2017 08:20

Trump representative on BBC news now - telling the news reader that calling it 'a ban' was 'feeding the narrative' of the the liberals Hmm

merrymouse · 31/01/2017 08:28

Well perhaps he should brief Giuliani not to call it a Muslim ban, and then go back in time to Deceber 2015 and tell Trump.

Destinysdaughter · 31/01/2017 08:32

There's talk of a general strike on Twitter now

Woke up to the news. Shocked and thought, yep, this IS a dictatorship.Angry

RedToothBrush · 31/01/2017 08:34

Trump's new world order (a Nazi phrase which Bannon has used in the last 24 hours) will not end in the US.

Its alive and well here too.

Today's action in parliament will just make it easier to happen.

Been saying for months and months just how much Nazi propaganda is about here. Have been accused of hysteria.

Watch how this happens. Everyone is fed up with the current political parties. Someone is busy grooming himself for the white knight who can save use from them. Making himself look respectable.

This isn't just about the US. This is about the UK.

I think it may already be too late here as well.

HoHumming · 31/01/2017 08:35

This man is just the puppet. We have more reason to be scared of who is pulling his strings. It is terrifying.

Mirador · 31/01/2017 08:37

ban1
ban/
verb
past tense: banned; past participle: banned
officially or legally prohibit (something).
"parking is banned around the harbour in summer"
synonyms:
prohibit, forbid, veto, proscribe, disallow, outlaw, make illegal, embargo, place an embargo on, bar, debar, block, stop, put a stop to, put an end to, suppress, interdict;
enjoin, restrain
"Norway banned all tobacco advertising in 1975"
antonyms:
permit

officially prevent (someone) from doing something.
"her son was banned for life from the Centre"
synonyms:
exclude, banish, expel, eject, evict, drive out, force out, oust, remove, get rid of, drum out, thrust out, push out, turn out;

How can it not be a ban? It's there in plain English. I'm glad I don't have a twitter account, seeing what's happening it's too tempting to let anger take over.

hackmum · 31/01/2017 08:37

That blog, if right, is quite worrying.

I notice that we've had the usual predictable cries of "Why are you protesting against American when you never protest against Saudi Arabia/Russia/Turkey/insert repressive regime of choice?"

I'm old enough to remember the 70s, when any protest against apartheid South Africa, one of the most evil regimes in the world, was always met with the "Why don't you protest against Russia" stuff. As if protesting against one injustice doesn't count unless you protest against all of them. As if these people are too dim to understand that what the US is now doing constitutes a global threat above and beyond what other regimes are doing - the US, after all, is supposed to be a democracy. It's supposed to be an ally.

And one thing you notice about these people who say "Why aren't you protesting against X" is that they're not protesting against those countries themselves. They're not protesting against anything. They seem to imagine that by sitting on their own no-doubt capacious arses criticising everyone else's efforts, they're somehow proving their own moral superiority. Well, I think history is going to deliver a different verdict.

squishysquirmy · 31/01/2017 08:50

Some of the British tabloids very much in favour of Trump's ban this morning.
I WANT this to be hysteria. I want to look back, and realise I was overeacting. But I don't think it is, and if we ignore this, by the time those dismissing this as "hysteria" realise their mistake, it will be too late.
Trump and Bannon etc will do whatever they can get away with, no less.
Where are all these checks and balances that the American system is supposed to have?

Lweji · 31/01/2017 09:00

I've just told my son to watch the news and pay attention because he's living what will probably become a key historic event.

I compared it, as an opposite, to when I lived the Berlin Wall being taken down.

amispartacus · 31/01/2017 09:11

The Daily Mail thinks it's fine, nothing to worry about etc. But this is the paper that promotes Islamophobia and has a mysoginist for an editor. Oh - and just to remind people, it no doubt supports the 'people vs the judiciary'

There were passionate MPs yesterday who were saying it's happening here. It is happening here. All too easy. I have absolutely no doubt there are people in the UK who have an issue with Islam, with LGBT rights, 'political correctness' and who are happy with Trump and would love to see a similar stance here.

We live in scary times.

The outcome of the upcoming elections in Europe is also a frightening prospect.

I am amazed by how many people here are supportive of Trumps policies and think we need the same thing. Scary times indeed.

amispartacus · 31/01/2017 09:18

This morning, it was suggested that younger Royals take more of a part in the State Visit - not the Queen.

Given William and Charles view on things, I strongly suspect that would be a bad idea. Of course, they could send Harry - but he is ex army and has many friends who are Afghan and Iraqi.

The State Visit has really backfired - and if it gets downgraded to a normal visit, Trump won't like it.

Suspect some of MP's passion yesterday was buoyed by all the protests, thanks all on this thread, I still think it's worth phoning, writing nagging them with what you think, they, I am pretty sure have never known anything like it.
Just had conversation with my tory MP's PA. Although still voting to trigger, they are starting to wobble.
We still have separation of powers here: judiciary, legislature, and government. In US are having their's over ruled, we can offer solidarity by making sure we use our democracy, while it still limps on.
Help our US posters by contacting MPs today, on Trump, brexit whatever give them your views, they are still our representatives.
We have to use it while we can, please phone or write.
www.parliament.uk/get-involved/contact-your-mp/
www.writetothem.com
They are representatives not delegates of constituents, they have to use their own consciences to vote.
Sorry that wasn't as funny as other posters, but we can act.
They are wobbling.

amispartacus · 31/01/2017 09:20

The ground has been set. The right wing media has laid the ground out and has been targetting people who are different - and using them as scapegoats for their problems.

It's not just the USA. This involves us as well. Brexit is all tied up in this.

I am glad there were Tories speaking up yesterday.

MsHooliesCardigan · 31/01/2017 09:22

According to the front page of The Express, 99% of British people agree with the ban Hmm

woman12345 · 31/01/2017 09:23

If there's 20-30 posters here who could also ask friends in neighbouring constituencies to do the same.
Use it or lose it.

AndHoldTheBun · 31/01/2017 09:23

I agree. Brexit, Trump, it's all part of the same moment. My constant refrain lately is WTF is wrong with the world.
