Assuming you are a right thinking individual, who thinks kissing the short fingered vulgarian's arse is demeaning to this country, please could you:

  1. Sign a petition against his getting the full state visit treatment. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/171928
  1. Post below, to bump the thread. Give us your best insults about President Fart, link to an anti-trump memes, or just suggest candidates for the worst thing he's ever said.

Feel free to disagree vociferously below as well :-)

So the petition says "Donald Trump's well documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales."

Those characteristics have never been displayed by any members of the royal family then...?

Bestthingever · 29/01/2017 19:16

That's such a pathetically passive way to look at it Cobweb. It's also wrong. We don't just elect them every five years and let them get on with it. We have a duty to make them accountable. Democracy needs check and balances.

Unescorted · 29/01/2017 19:18

I am not in a position of power.

You are - just tell your elected representitive what you think. Sign a petition or write a letter. They don't take a steer just at election time. Make your views known.

Roussette · 29/01/2017 19:19

So are 570,000 people wrong then cobweb? That's how many have signed the petition not wanting Trump here.

SingaSong12 · 29/01/2017 19:19

Most of us are not in a position of political power but that doesn't mean we have no influence or power to pressure those who are. It doesn't mean we shouldn't try to make a difference.

Right now what I can do is sign this petition and support my dual nationality (UK/Sudan) friend who has a full valid American visa but is now unable to travel to America to be with her DH. She emailed me a link.

donquixotedelamancha · 29/01/2017 19:20

Thanks to all who posted. The petition's up to nearly 600,000 as I type (mostly down to this thread, I'm sure),

I think you could all put some more effort into the insults though, come on.

Politicians represent the people ALL THE TIME. It's not like you only get to tell them what you think once every few years or something Confused

Cobweb89 · 29/01/2017 19:21

I am not apathetic or defeatist, but I firmly believe that Theresa May and whoever in parliament/royal circles is involved has a much better understanding of all the issues surrounding this event than anyone on this thread. Unless she's here is disguise Grin.

So I'd prefer her to make the decision based on her knowledge and expertise. Would you like a doctor doing your surgery or a 13yo who fancies a go with a scalpel? That's how I see this I'm afraid. She's the expert, we aren't.

Parker231 · 29/01/2017 19:23

My friends are now worried about their holiday to Florida to celebrate their sons 18th birthday. My friend is dual nationality - British/Iran. He was born in the UK, went to school here, works here, has a home here, married with two children. He is very concerned about flying into America and being stopped traveling or worse facing problems getting entry to the US. The US embassy are struggling to give proper advise and the airline aren't able to give any guarantees.

TheDowagerCuntess · 29/01/2017 19:24

Wow, Cobweb, that's just not how it works in a free and open country.

People are able and allowed to speak out on issues they don't agree with.

CouchSwede · 29/01/2017 19:25

Cobweb I see what you're saying, but please realise that ultimately politicians DO make the final decision. They represent us. Petitions and protests are two ways of letting them know what we think; I can't think how to say this without sounding sarcastic but it's not like proposing a coup or something. It's voters making their opinions clear.

Cobweb89 · 29/01/2017 19:26

But Parker, that is exactly what our govt is asking Trump to address. Those with dual British+"banned" nationality exempted. An extremely shit situation for your friends. But our govt is trying to help them.

CouchSwede · 29/01/2017 19:28

Rightly or wrongly just look how Brexit turned out politicians have to take public opinion into account if they want to keep their jobs.

Unfortunately, given a recent example, I think it's fairly obvious that we can't assume that our elected representatives are qualified surgeons. In fact I think it's the 13yo who fancied a go with the scalpel who's the cause of all the problems here!

Roussette · 29/01/2017 19:29

MP's are accountable to us the people. We are here to make our views known if necessary. Whether by writing to our MPs on local matters or signing a petition not wanting Trump on a state visit. Because of the huge number of signatories, it's now got to be debated in Parliament. Surely that's a good thing?

We aren't sheep. We're not in a dictatorship, we are free thinking people with different views that we are allowed to air to the members of parliament we chose to represent us.

It's strange you are so passive about everything.

ExplodedCloud · 29/01/2017 19:29

cobweb this is a petition to Parliament requesting MPs debate this. Why wouldn't you as a constituent, like your MP to debate this? It would require the PM (or more likely a junior Foreign Office minister) to explain why they think it's a good idea.

Parker231 · 29/01/2017 19:29

Theresa May won't do anything - she's too hung up on the 'special relationship '. She had her chance in the US to publicly state her views but didn't. No way will Trump back down!

JillJ72 · 29/01/2017 19:34

I've signed. I couldn't not do so.

throwingpebbles · 29/01/2017 19:36

They aren't surgeons with a scalpel; far from it. More like a random man off the street who got voted in to "have a go at "surgery and needs to be held accountable and scrutinised.

Parker231 · 29/01/2017 19:37

Signed and emailed my MP

donquixotedelamancha · 29/01/2017 19:41

@itinerary

"I wonder if all this attention, even though it's negative, is feeding into the whole thing... "bad publicity is better than no publicity"?"

I'd have agreed with this sentiment completely BEFORE the election, but now Agent Orange has actual power and is using it to bring on Ragnarok. If the Xenophobic Sweet Potato is honoured in our name, by our government, using our money, it reflects on us.

JustSpeakSense · 29/01/2017 19:44

Signed ✔️

sympatico1 · 29/01/2017 19:48

Cobweb, maybe you are too young to remember the Poll Tax debacle during the Thatcher years; mass riots and demonstrations and a concerted effort of opposition 'persuaded' the Government to abolish the dreaded Tax. Don't forget the quote 'the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is that good men should do nothing'.

Becles · 29/01/2017 19:50

Please could everyone signing the petition also email their MP with your views and ask for a reply a) stating their views and b) confirming that the will share your thoughts with the PM and FCO.

Destinysdaughter · 29/01/2017 19:52

Cobweb, would you have said the same about the apartheid regime in South Africa...?

ARumWithAView · 29/01/2017 20:08

But I do understand my place, which is an ordinary member of the public.
I firmly believe that Theresa May and whoever in parliament/royal circles is involved has a much better understanding of all the issues surrounding this event than anyone on this thread.

Excellent. Pop your vote in the box at the next election, then sit back for however many years while the world goes to shit, content that there's nothing one little private citizen can achieve. You've devolved all personal ethics and conscience to your elected representative, so that's you absolved of any responsibility. Shake your head and tut when others speak out. Well done on not making a fuss.

Apathetic, defeatistic, ignorant, lazy, smug, selfish and enabling.
