Goebbels secretary was wrong - although the country was under a kind of spell, (as we are now in the UK pandering to Farage and the Tory right, and sucking up to Trump), there were people who defied the Nazis and paid the price for it.

She did mention that those who defied the nazis were made to suffer.
It's easy to say we'd have done so and so, but it's harder when you have more to lose than benefit. Until any fight is almost useless.

I can't see how a totalitarian regime can be brought into a modern country iin the internet age?

BigBadgers · 30/01/2017 12:14

I worry that even if the senate managed to stage a revolt and move to impeach him the damage has already been done. People have been turned against each other and previously illicit thoughts about immigrants and others have been given legitimacy. This can't easily be put back in the box. Best case scenario still leaves America a dangerously fractured nation.

This just gets more and more terrifying all the time, I almost can't believe this is happening.

BigBadgers · 30/01/2017 12:20

The internet is a tool. It can be used for good or bad in some ways it makes it easier for a totalitarian regime as it is easy to track people and find out who those who speak out are, and America already has the tools to do this. It also makes it easy to sow disinformation, trump has already made use of this. Mass censorship is also possible, but harder to achieve, China has managed it though. Besides, most censorship is enforced by the individual who is afraid of the repercussions of defying the will of the regime. If you believe they can tell if you defy them and believe they will exact a harsh penalty then you are unlikely to even go looking for information.

BigBadgers · 30/01/2017 12:22

I have mentioned this on a previous thread, but I would encourage people to watch the Edward Snowdon documentary "citizenfour" for an insight into the kind of surveillance trump now has his hands on. I think it is still on Netflix.

I suppose if there is sufficient rot present already then things just need to be set in motion and collapse will follow

Its just a case of getting a foot in the door and then it can fall like dominoes?

An ethical insurance company...go figure Wink

The insurance company AXA UK, says its travel policy holders will be entitled to claims if they have been hit by Trump’s travel ban. It said:

“In light of the sudden and unexpected decision by the Trump administration to block entry to the US for nationals from Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Iraq, Iran, Libya and Yemen, AXA Insurance UK confirms that individuals who have been denied entry as a result of the executive order, will be able to claim on their policy. Although not technically covered, we view the current situation as unprecedented and unforeseen and as such we are extending the cover under our policies. For those intending to travel to, or return from, the United States of America we recommend allowing extra time due to protests currently taking place at a number of airports.”
