Didn't realise there were midterm elections due next year. Very interesting. Sad

This situation with North and South Korea really pisses me off. He is pitting one against the other. He told South Korea he wanted more money for the troops that are there - protection money, anyone?? Then said he was happy to go into talks with North Korea if need be.

Is there any country he is not trying to start a war with??

User006point5 · 30/01/2017 10:44

Or that Starbucks had a branch in Trump Tower... Hmm

Roussette · 30/01/2017 10:46

Can you imagine the backbiting and talk in the corridors of the WH? It must be a horrible place to work if you are one of the good Republicans and never thought this shit was actually going to happen. I'm just hoping that there is a lot of dissent and it's quietly being put together to rise up and denounce him. (I've probably been watching too many boxsets...)

Is anyone else experiencing a constant sick feeling of dread since 20th January?

BigBadgers · 30/01/2017 10:55

I agree with those pp who have said the GOP won't go against trump if they think they will just get ousted for it. They have to be shown that not standing up to trump will damage them and lead to them losing their seat in the midterms. This is what the petitions and protests achieve, they shift the balance of risk for the senators. They show them the strength of feeling in the population and up the pressure on them to do something.

People are petitioning Starbucks in an attempt to get them to close their Trump Tower branch: www.thepetitionsite.com/en-gb/849/279/108/starbucks-terminate-your-leases-at-trump-properties/

(I think it started before he became President, but it might gain more traction now?)

In particular, in this country, we can kill the narrative that Brexit was all about Farage and Breitbart and Bannon. In Trumpland we are part of Bannons grand plan. We have to show that we aren't.

Thinking more about oppression of women, which we've already seen with the Global Gagging Order and are expecting to see more of under the Trump regime, I think that oppression will be presented differently from the persecution of the (intersecting) groups Zunger identifies, of muslims, latinos, black, and trans people.

It's less likely that women are going to be named as a class for persecution and class-hatred - because we're too large a group and anyway that doesn't play with men who tend to have allegiances to individual women.

So women will be broken up into subgroups for oppression: immoral women, who want birth control or abortions; black women, for being part of the black persecution group; poor women, for being poor; powerful women, for challenging men; and so on. And women will be expected to join in this oppression of each other group of women.

I also expect one of the propaganda tricks of the regime will be to attempt to divert or paralyse feminists with a sort of inverse whataboutery: "Sisters, why are we considering X group's rights instead of women's rights?" (not only Divide and Rule, but actually erasing women in X group).

I've already seen that one at work over the last couple of years. So while it's important to keep an eye on the ball for the rights of women as a class, I think we should also keep an eye out for when we're all being Divided and Ruled.

Sorry to keep wittering on, out of the flow of the thread. But this stuff's been bothering me for a while.

Merry: "In particular, in this country, we can kill the narrative that Brexit was all about Farage and Breitbart and Bannon. In Trumpland we are part of Bannons grand plan. We have to show that we aren't."

Yes, absolutely! The more protests, petitions, donations to ACLU the better. It's about showing publicly that we support sane Americans, that we are not the poodle of the Trumpites, that we stand shoulder to shoulder with our own minority groups in this country.

(Apologies if already referred to)
'The administration is testing the extent to which the DHS (and other executive agencies) can act and ignore orders from the other branches of government. This is as serious as it can possibly get: all of the arguments about whether order X or Y is unconstitutional mean nothing if elements of the government are executing them and the courts are being ignored.
Yesterday was the trial balloon for a coup d’état against the United States. It gave them useful information'

From the guardian:

US embassy in the UK suspends visa issuance to nationals and dual nationals

So much for that apparent commitment to Boris Johnson about dual nationals in the UK.

The US embassy in the UK has repeated that warning, made in Berlin, about visa issuance.

Per US Presidential Executive Order signed on January 27, 2017, visa issuance to aliens from the countries of Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen has been suspended effective immediately until further notification.

If you are a national, or dual national, of one of these countries, please do not schedule a visa appointment or pay any visa fees at this time.

If you already have an appointment scheduled, please DO NOT ATTEND your appointment as we will not be able to proceed with your visa interview. Please note that certain travel for official governmental purposes, related to official business at or on behalf of designated international organizations, on behalf of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or by certain officials is not subject to this suspension.

Interesting article on Goebbel's secretary who died yesterday

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-38793048

"The people who today say they would have done more for those poor, persecuted Jews… I really believe that they sincerely mean it," she said in interviews for A German Life. "But they wouldn't have done it either."

But she always maintained that she did not share in the blame for the actions of her superiors.

I wouldn't see myself as being guilty," she said. "Unless you end up blaming the entire German population for ultimately enabling that government to take control. That was all of us. Including me."

Those people nowadays who say they would have stood up against the Nazis – I believe they are sincere in meaning that, but believe me, most of them wouldn’t have,” she said. “The whole country was as if under a kind of a spell… I could open myself up to the accusations that I wasn’t interested in politics but the truth is, the idealism of youth might easily have led to you having your neck broken.”

Re Ivanka, yes she is showing the same disassociation with the general public that her husband and her father show. And the whole "in front of a mirror so you can see her husband's hand is on her ass" puhleeze. So classless.
