To wish I could cancel my holiday to the US?

We are supposed to be going to Orlando in August.

I'm genuinely worried about going. With that dickhead in charge, I'm more worried than ever about a terrorist attack. I don't feel safe and the prospect of having to go fills me with dread! (Anxiety sufferer, btw)

Not to mention that I have no desire to support the economy of a country with an inherently racist president.

The holiday cost too much just to not go. But I really wish I could cancel.

Hopefully someone will tell me AIBU and it's no riskier now than it was previously but it's really worrying me

Have you paid it all up front or just deposits? August is some way away. I know what you mean though.

Flights are paid up (and cost thousands) - hotel is only deposit at this point and whilst I'd happily lose the £300 deposit I can't justify losing the other several thousand!

Sounds silly to me to lose thousands you have already paid out, but if you can afford to lose it then it's up to you.

I have New York booked for me, baby dd and dh later in the year and I will certainly be going still. I will not cancel because Trump is in charge!

On the terrorist attack thing look what's happened in France/Turkey in the last few years no country in safe and I bet plenty of people will still go too France/Turkey this year

Since it's booked, I'd go. Chances are it'll be fine and you'll have a great time. After that you can boycott if you wish.

We go every year for 6 weeks September/October to visit my Grandpops and grandma and it's all booked & paid for.

I will not cancel because Trump got elected.

I don't worry about a terrorist attack anymore than I'd worry if I was going to London for the day and getting the tube/ France/Germany\ Turkey. No where is 100% safe even the uk

You have more chance of dying on the way to the airport than winding up in the middle of a terrorist attack.

I don't think Trump being president will affect the likelihood of terrorist attacks on tourist attractions.

I'm going in September for my ninth visit. If you're worried about the security in the theme parks ,don't be, it's all bag checks and metal detectors since the orlando nightclub shooting last year. It's as safe as anywhere else these days. All I would say is have a lost plan and write your mobile number directly on your kids skin every morning (do it in sharpie n it lasts a few more days). It's a multi billion dollar industry the owners are going to do everything the can to protect it.

Also don't forget that your own government is toadying up to Trump big time. To have invited him for a state visit in the first week of his presidency? Theresa May holding hands with him? There are a lot of us Americans who are really upset about this because it will be used by him to shore up his base and it will feed his grandiosity no end.

I think you might better channel your anger and concern homeward. Perhaps it could help both our countries.

Try and find time to visit a National Park while you're there. That way you are contributing to something positive and they could really do with our support right now.

YABU to not want to go but claiming you "have" to go because you've paid for it already. If your principles are strong enough, then you should be willing to accept that you will lose your money. If the money means more to you than the desire to boycott the US, then go and enjoy your holiday.

The terrorist threat is not suddenly more serious because of Trump. The US was already the number one target! Terrorists know that an attack against the US will generate far more publicity for them (which is their aim of course) than attack on any other western country, and certainly a hell of a lot more than an attack on a "soft-target" country in Africa or the Middle East.

You can cancel if you want. No-one is stopping you. Only you can decide though if your fear of what might happen is worth losing money over. If it's that big a worry (and I do understand that anxiety makes it bigger) then it might be worth cancelling. But then you're financially out of pocket. Can't you get part of your money back if you cancel now? It's still a good way off.

vodkadrinker I agree wholeheartedly . We are off to the US soon and will go at least twice this year and have no hesitation. I love it there as does DH. Don't cancel , go and enjoy it OP.

Cancel your holiday. Only ever visit destinations whose President/PM aligns perfectly with your political views. This will guarantee 100% safety from terrorist attacks.

Dont cancel, it will be a terrific holiday.

There is more chance of you getting hurt in a car accident here than there is of a terrorist attack at an Orlando attraction on the very day you visit.

Anyway security is very tight in the parks, it takes an age to get in but its better that way than no security at all.

Shit happened in USA last year too but kids and I still went to Orlando, we had such a great time, kids are still talking about it now, no way was I cancelling our holiday of a lifetime over a 'what if' scenario. If I thought like that we would never leave the house!

YABU about terrorism. The chances of anything happening to you are minute - especially in Orlando. You would be at more risk in Paris, London or Berlin. I do understand your fear though - one of humanity's weaknesses is that we struggle to deal with risk.

I respect your issues with Trump but please keep them in perspective. I am a brown-skinned person with an immigration interview tomorrow. If I am rejected I will not be able to join my husband. I consider myself privileged to be a British emigrant as I am aware that other wives and mothers are in a much more tenuous situation, but the thought of Trump throwing another tantrum between now and my arrival in the US is terrifying.

There are worse things happening than missing a holiday.

You can cancel your holiday. You just don't want to put your money where your mouth is.

We're going to Orlando in April. I briefly thought I wished we weren't going but, to be frank, there's no way I can afford to lose the money if we don't go or make a late change to somewhere else.

I meant to add that yo can cancel your holiday if you want to, its up to you to decide how strong your feelings are.
