To wish I could cancel my holiday to the US?

We are supposed to be going to Orlando in August.

I'm genuinely worried about going. With that dickhead in charge, I'm more worried than ever about a terrorist attack. I don't feel safe and the prospect of having to go fills me with dread! (Anxiety sufferer, btw)

Not to mention that I have no desire to support the economy of a country with an inherently racist president.

The holiday cost too much just to not go. But I really wish I could cancel.

Hopefully someone will tell me AIBU and it's no riskier now than it was previously but it's really worrying me Sad

Same position here OP. We're definitely still going but ideally id like to distance myself from all that as much as possible.

Don't cancel. Donald Trump will have absolutely zero to do with your holiday.

Do get some help with your anxiety, though, to enable you to enjoy the holiday and the build up.

I wouldn't cancel this time but i generally think boycotting US trips and products is the only way those outside the US can make an impact. The only, only thing his supporters will negatively respond to is a hit on the economy. Otherwise the man could come out as a pedophile and they would just dismiss it, I honestly believe that.

I wonder what the travel companies policy is on those people who can no longer travel due to dual nationality, or UK citizens who were born in one of the countries that Trump has banned.

I know what you mean.

I'm going on honeymoon next week to America. If I could change it I would.

TrumpsAFlump · 29/01/2017 16:34

I was just at the very early stages of planning / saving for Orlando, but don't feel like it now. All the joy has been sucked out of the idea.

But those saying they can't afford to lose the money - of course you can, you just don't go on holiday! It'll be cheaper not being on holiday so if you can afford to pay for the holiday, you can afford not to go! What you mean is, you can't afford to pay for an additional holiday. Therefore your desire to be on holiday is greater than your need to avoid the USA. Which is fine, of course. But it isn't about not being able to afford it. You'll pay that money whether you are on the holiday or not!!

I'm not sure whether I'd go to the US on holiday or not, ive never factored in the political implications of a holiday if I'm honest. Perhaps I should.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/01/2017 17:29

You're right Excellent. After a pretty crap year we really need a holiday and, if we cancel this one, we can't afford to book somewhere else. Added to that, I actually want to go and I'm looking forward to it. I admire anyone who would cancel and go without on a point of principal, but sadly I'm not one of them.

EmeraldScorn · 29/01/2017 17:36

You're being paranoid!

There's as much chance of the UK being targeted, what are you going to do stay in your house for the rest of your life?

What will be will be, you shouldn't let it interfere with your plans though - Go and enjoy yourself!

I have to go to Texas for business in a few months. I'm not so much worried about terrorism as getting arrested! My passport has entry visas for a number of Muslim countries ( none of them on the banned list as yet) and given that phones are being checked at immigration for anti-Trump browsing history now.....
Orange suits me, but I don't want to be wearing it for the next 20 years!

Itscurtainsforyou · 29/01/2017 18:55

Phones are being checked for anti-trump browsing history??Shock

I can't say what has actually happened at immigration checkpoints, but it's my understanding that phone checking is under consideration by the White House, but at least according to news reports, it would be for contacts. There is also consideration of asking about social media activity and websites visited.

MagicChicken · 29/01/2017 19:49

Have you checked the cancellation policy on your flights? I imagine you would have to pay a cancellation fee but I doubt you'd lose the whole cost of the flights. If it's really bothering you that much then it's got to be worth the loss.

It will cost you a lot more if you go ahead and you don't even want to go, so what's the point? Better to lose a bit of money and feel happy about not going than to spend a ton of money on something you don't want to do. Confused

Weedsnseeds1 · 29/01/2017 20:10

Even if it's "only" a rummage through my contacts and Facebook, there are a large number of Muslim names and countries there, but I won't be deleting friends or colleagues because of their names, religion or where they were born.
