Was I being unreasonable to ask this woman to stop making 'aww' noises?

I think I might have just been quite rude, so do tell me if you think I was and I will apologise to her.

She was asking me questions - are you married, do you have kids and so on, and I was responding in the negative. She then kept saying 'awwwww' sympathetically, with a head tilt. I said in the end politely but a bit tersely 'please don't do that!'

Was I? I feel bad now!

She sounds annoying!

If she'd done that to me on a good day, I'd probably have responded the same way you did. Otherwise, I doubt I would have been so polite.

A bit defensive of you I think. Some people are just trying to make small talk and are not all that good at it. Your response may make her less inclined to try again in the future. I understand it may be annoying, but I think you were a bit rude.

That was the context Reality. I met her at a friends party, she was chatting to me, and then I got the questions and there must have been nine or ten of them, I got an 'awwwwww' sympathetic noise too!

Random person you met at a party - I would have asked her to elaborate on her awwwwing lol

She then stopped asking questions, which was a relief to be honest.

I get this sometimes, when people ask if I'm married with children and I say I'm not. I just do the classic "tinkly laugh" and say "No, it's fine. I prefer it this way!"

I'm curious how old she was and where she was from.

Maybe she'd been playing with baby chicks previously and said 'awwwwww' so many times now it's all she can say.

ilovesooty I think she was trying to be friendly and "get to know me." It was uncomfortable really as I kept trying to turn the questions back on her ("so, how about you?") but she then would ask me another question.

She was my age - mid/late thirties. Northern. Like me. :)

When I'm asked that, I just say "god no" as if the thought fills me with horror.
Works a treat.

She's the one being rude asking personal questions.
