To think I'm overweight (refused access to an NHS funded diet program + pic included)

I used to be a svelte size 10. Put on weight after having my Son. My main issue is my stomach. It sticks out. I think this is because I have a small waist so the fat has a smaller area to cover (if that makes sense). In the morning it can look pretty flat but by the evening after I've eaten a meal it does stick out in tight clothes.

Anyway, I don't know what I weigh. But I have always considered myself considerably overweight. At least two stone overweight. I am 5ft7 and should be no more than 11 stone and around 10stone to me a very healthy weight. I suspect I'm about 13 stone. People do often tell me I am fine the way I am but my parents tell me I need to lose two stone.

Anyway, signed up for an NHS funded diet programme. I arrive and they tell me my BMI is not high enough to qualify. You have to be at least two stone overweight. But I am sure I am I said. They didn't even weigh me and said I was too slim to join.

I've just signed up to slimming world but I'm really annoyed. I know I should be flattered but I really wanted to go on the course and do genuinely think I'm overweight by around two stone and should have been allowed participate. I have struggled to lose the baby weight but I know I have to make an effort. AIBU?

Sorry for the poor quality of pics. I'm not in my own home and took them just now. They're not designed to be in any way flattering. I want genuine opinions and I'm ready for them!

Belly Fat buster DVD, it's stomach exercises in 10 minute slots, it will be the best fiver you will ever spend. I've been doing it for the last 2 years and despite being in my forties and having had children, my tummy is flat as a pancake.

OneWithTheForce · 27/01/2017 18:31

They don't accept any weigh figure taken at home

You don't have a weight figure taken at home.

In this thread you have gone from saying you are sure you are over 13 stone to "unless I am under 11 stone" that's a weight range of 2 stone! You literally haven't the foggiest what weight you are.

longdiling · 27/01/2017 18:32

How does being a size 12/14 effect your health exactly? It's nowhere near big enough to put pressure on your joints or put you at risk of diabetes etc etc

gamerchick · 27/01/2017 18:32

You are not 2 stone overweight, Christ on a bike!

Tidy your bedroom, that'll use some calories up.

Postchildrenpregranny · 27/01/2017 18:33

You can weigh yourself in Boots OP .Not starkers obviously but I deduct about 3lbs for clothes I am slowly losing weight and do it to check my BMI

AyeAmarok · 27/01/2017 18:33

It's sad that those of us who are overweight can't get help. We've tried hard not to get ourselves into a state of obesity and yet we can't get help.

What have you tried? Running 5k every day? Weights? Smaller portion sizes of healthy food? Long-term, and not just for a week?

How hard have you tried, really? Be honest with yourself.

longdiling · 27/01/2017 18:34

Grin gamerchick. That's the first time I think I've seen you lose your cool on here (man).

HappyFlappy · 27/01/2017 18:34

You are NOT overweight!

Your stomach muscles have lost tone because you have had a baby!

This happens to all of us mothers. Some of us are lucky - due to our musculature and/or th amount of thing exercises we do, we get our tums (fairly) flat again. Most of us always have a little bulge.

I'm afraid that it is the price you pay for your lovely baby. You may be "fatter" than you want to be, but you are not excessively fat at all.

If you cut down a little on your food and (alcoholic and carbonated) drink intake, and do a few sit-ups every day, you will soon see a difference (I used the Joanna Hall DVD - it was pretty cheap from what I recall, and for me better than Rosemary Conley because you don't need a huge room to exercise in). If you improved your posture that would make a lot of difference too - you are quite slouchy. Try standing up straight and tucking your bum in. It will flatten your tummy automatically.

f you have a friend who has done slimming world, ask if you can borrow her recipe books.

bumsexatthebingo · 27/01/2017 18:35

mumofthemonsters808 is the dvd actually called 'belly fat buster'?

Flisstizzy · 27/01/2017 18:35

It's no wonder the NHS is on its Knees if folk like the OP (who are a teeny bit overweight) think it should fund a diet programme for them.

user1485442361 · 27/01/2017 18:35

gamerchick it's not my house.

I worked for the NHS. I very rarely use the NHS. So you know what, if I want to use an NHS funded programme and I feel it would benefit my mental and physical health I would feel absolutely no guilt whatsoever doing so. That's not the AIBU.

The AIBU is was it unreasonable for them to refuse me without weighing me?

If you can afford an i-phone, as shown in your pic, surely you can afford to pay for your own SW membership?

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 27/01/2017 18:35

Woman age 30 who is inactive. I put in 12 stone. So you can be up to 11 stone 6 before you're even creeping into overweight.

If your consultant is good she will tell you not to bother and to just do some exercise. It's not worth a fiver a week.

I follow Emily Skye on Facebook. Her belly looks like that after a big feed. She posts photos of it to highlight the effect food has on our belly shape. To show that even the fittest of people get bloated bellies.

ATailofTwoKitties · 27/01/2017 18:36

Grin Gamerchick, that made me laugh and remember what state my bedroom is in.

CheeseCrackersAndWine · 27/01/2017 18:36

I think you feel overweight as you are heavier than you would like to be. You don't look unhealthily over weight to me. For my height (5ft 5) my 'healthy' weight range on a BMI calculator is between 7 stone 10 and 10 stone 9. I like to stay around 9 stone to feel ok and would feel overweight at 10 stone 9 but I would need to be 12 stone 9 to be classed as 2 stone overweight on a BMI calculator so I'd imagine you are nowhere near 2 stone heavier that the highest 'healthy' weight but very possibly 2 stone over your ideal weight.

MsJamieFraser · 27/01/2017 18:36

I also dont buy the whole "I've tried everything" if that's the case have you been to the doctors and for them to check your thyroid?, are you eating low low fat and high fibre food groups (not processed or re packaged) drinking plenty of water, and sleeping well, plus keeping fit and active etc...

unless you have diagnosed medical reason as to why your not loosing weight and toning up then I am sorry you haven't tried everything.

user1485442361 · 27/01/2017 18:36

As you all say, how can I say I'm overweight without knwing my weight. Same goes for them. If they wouldn't weigh me. Surely they can't safely say I am not overweight.

Suprised people see to think I'm around 11 stone. I thought I was 13. I will obviously not get anywhere with this thread but I will weigh myself as soon as I can.

Flisstizzy · 27/01/2017 18:37

I will revise my last comment - the OP doesn't look overweight to me.

nancy75 · 27/01/2017 18:37

If you worked for the NHS you know how short of money it is and yet you are still pissed off you can't get something for nothing?

PastysPrincess · 27/01/2017 18:38

Being overweight, obese and clinically obese are three totally different things. At your height you would need to weigh 18st 5 lbs to qualify for the NHS course which is for clinically obese people i.e. People who weigh so much it will be critical to their health to lose weight immediately.

You may be over weight but that is no where near a BMI of 40. You are either stealth boasting because you need a little pick me up or you have body dysmorphia and are mentally ill.

HicDraconis · 27/01/2017 18:38

Your posture in the photo is shocking - shoulders slumped, arms slightly forward - anyone can take a photo making themselves look fatter than they are.

Nobody can agree or disagree regarding your weight unless you have an actual number. I strongly doubt your bmi is over 30 (yes it's a blunt tool but it's better than guesswork and stubborn stating of belief and not fact).

Many people have lax (or separated) abdominal wall muscles after pregnancy which don't completely return to normal hence a pot belly appearance.

Pharmacies have scales and weight loss programs, gyms have the same. I don't see how being the size you are is affecting your health, it's the very overweight / obese category that risk diabetes, musculoskeletal problems, fungal infections etc.

Nanna50 · 27/01/2017 18:38

It would have taken less time to weigh yourself and calculate your bmi than the time spent taking and uploading photos and commenting on here Confused

OneWithTheForce · 27/01/2017 18:38

So you know what, if I want to use an NHS funded programme and I feel it would benefit my mental and physical health I would feel absolutely no guilt whatsoever doing so.

Thankfully they won't let you.
