To think I'm overweight (refused access to an NHS funded diet program + pic included)

I used to be a svelte size 10. Put on weight after having my Son. My main issue is my stomach. It sticks out. I think this is because I have a small waist so the fat has a smaller area to cover (if that makes sense). In the morning it can look pretty flat but by the evening after I've eaten a meal it does stick out in tight clothes.

Anyway, I don't know what I weigh. But I have always considered myself considerably overweight. At least two stone overweight. I am 5ft7 and should be no more than 11 stone and around 10stone to me a very healthy weight. I suspect I'm about 13 stone. People do often tell me I am fine the way I am but my parents tell me I need to lose two stone.

Anyway, signed up for an NHS funded diet programme. I arrive and they tell me my BMI is not high enough to qualify. You have to be at least two stone overweight. But I am sure I am I said. They didn't even weigh me and said I was too slim to join.

I've just signed up to slimming world but I'm really annoyed. I know I should be flattered but I really wanted to go on the course and do genuinely think I'm overweight by around two stone and should have been allowed participate. I have struggled to lose the baby weight but I know I have to make an effort. AIBU?

Sorry for the poor quality of pics. I'm not in my own home and took them just now. They're not designed to be in any way flattering. I want genuine opinions and I'm ready for them!

I tried everything in the last 3 years. I've never seen any change in my body at all (for those presuming I haven't tried anything).

I thought the group would give me encouragement and motivation.

I have now joined swimming world that I know a lot of people swear by. So fingers crossed I see some results from that.

It's sad that those of us who are overweight can't get help. We've tried hard not to get ourselves into a state of obesity and yet we can't get help.

There are sooo many proactive things you could be doing to solve your problem.

Posting on MN with guesstimates about your weight is not one of them.

longdiling · 27/01/2017 18:13

I should add I weigh about 11 stone and am about 5ft 6 so I doubt your wild guess of 13 stone is right.

user1485442361 · 27/01/2017 18:13

You can tell you're overweight. It's not rocket science. In my mind I am. Wanted the opinions of others to be sure and it's clear from the replies that I am. No one needs a scales for that which is why ive not bothered with them before. I can see the fat on my stomach.

Is the NHS course/programme free?

IWantATardis · 27/01/2017 18:14

And in my mind I certainly am. I am overweight. My stomach sticks out.

This isn't necessarily the same thing as fitting the medical criteria of "overweight" as determined by your BMI.

WorraLiberty · 27/01/2017 18:14

Just take 50p to the bloody chemist and hop on the scales Confused

OneWithTheForce · 27/01/2017 18:15

Bollocks you have. Sorry. But that's rubbish. You may have started everything, but you haven't stuck to it. If you had stuck to a very simple "eat less and move more" you would have lost weight. Certainly over 3 years.

nancy75 · 27/01/2017 18:15

And people wonder why the NHS is struggling, op just do a bit more exercise and eat a bit less food. These schemes are set up for very overweight people at risk of serious health problems - you very clearly don't fall into that category.

CherrySkull · 27/01/2017 18:15

"those of us who are overweight."

You know what, thats really fucking insulting. You are not overweight, i would give my right fucking arm to be as skinny as you are.

FTR, i'm a size 26, we dont have any NHS funded diets here, i'm having to lose weight all by my fucking self, and in 3 weeks of diet and exercise i'm already nearly a dress size down.

dont you DARE stick yourself in the same category as those of us who actually ARE overweight.

tabulahrasa · 27/01/2017 18:15

How have you joined slimming world without a starting weight?

Bluebubble123 · 27/01/2017 18:16

I would be surprised if you are 13 stone. I am 5.7 and 13 stone 5 Pounds and I look loads fatter than you on that photo. Get some scales you might be surprised.

RJnomore1 · 27/01/2017 18:16

I do t think you need to diet I think you need to stop eating foods that bloat you and start exercising to get some muscle tone.

NeeNahh · 27/01/2017 18:16

This reminds me of when I was an early teen and thin girls used to say "oh I am so fat" so everyone would say that they weren't.

Either that or the OP is trying to make a point about how we have lost sight of normal and we see overweight as normal.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/01/2017 18:16

But I am sure I am I said.

I have no idea why, but that has just made me laugh.

ShatnersBassoon · 27/01/2017 18:16

Damn the NHS! They completely fail to state the bleeding obvious to people who don't need to be told.

Iambubbles86 · 27/01/2017 18:16

My stomach sticks out like that, my bmi is 22, my tummy muscles are buggered after kids, in the morning like u its pretty flat but by the end it sticks right out. U may have a normal bmi

Bantanddec · 27/01/2017 18:17

Is "stomach sticks out a bit" a technical term now GrinGrin

SoupDragon · 27/01/2017 18:17

i would give my right fucking arm to be as skinny as you are.

She is not skinny.

She is over weight but not obese.

MyHairNeedsASnip · 27/01/2017 18:18

The one our council run is called 'lose weight feel great'. I don't know if it's just local or a nationwide thing. Your bmi has to be 25 or over and you self refer. I believe you get membership to slimming world or some gym access.

Babyg1995 · 27/01/2017 18:18

Surely if you have joined sw you will find out your weight then ?????

user1485442361 · 27/01/2017 18:19

I'm going to buy scales as soon as I can. Can't go to a chemist right this second.

I might not be 13 stone but I doubt I'm under 12 stone. I will find out once I have a scales. Just wanted general opnions on what people thought really.

I know you can't know but wanted opinions.

There's different levels of overweight, Even if you're a stone overweight, you're still overweight. Even if you're not obese.

I'm a size 14/12.

I've rang the SW consultant. Will go to my first meeting next week. Yes I will know my weight then.

YABU and a tad silly to moan about being 'overweight' when you haven't even weighed yourself. Buy some spanx - belly area sorted.

AyeAmarok · 27/01/2017 18:20

You can tell you're overweight. It's not rocket science. In my mind I am.

I agree OP.

However, I'm a healthy BMI. I could put on nearly 3 stone and still be a healthy BMI Shock I'd be fat then, really fat. I only weighed 1st 4 more when 9.5 months pregnant, so I can't imagine what I'd be like at nearly 3 stone more.

But as fat and big-bellied as I'd be, I wouldn't be "overweight" by their criteria. So while you might think you're overweight for you, you may not fit in to their category, for which the bar is much higher.
