To think Paperchase have lost their minds over cock and anal cards

Paperchase have a series of Valentine's cards with such witty captions as "I love your big cock" and "nothing says I love you like anal".

As a high street chain hugely popular with young people, I'd kind of expect them to understand some boundaries about graphic and sexually explicit language.

They're brazening it out on Twitter, claiming their minuscule disclaimer about the cards being rude is absolutely adequate.

Grim.

Just went into my local Paperchase for something else and happened to see these . Right there as you go in the door with all the other Valentines cards. On the top shelf though so out of sight of impressionable eyes (not). I am no prude but these are so distasteful and I have found myself feeling very differently towards the company and put off going in there. I'm just really surprised that they stock them.

RubyGoat · 26/01/2017 16:33

Wow. Overpriced, unimaginative and vulgar. Quite the hat trick. I hope they didn't actually pay anyone to come up with those things.

AngryGinger · 26/01/2017 16:33

I'm not offended by them, but I don't find them amusing either.

BornFreeButinChains · 26/01/2017 16:37

angry do you think they are suitable for small dc to see though?

I have emailed customer service

SixthSenseless · 26/01/2017 16:41

OMG -They have done this before, in 2013, with cards that said 'your hole is my goal' 'suck my dick' 'I would take it up the bum for you'...and they took them off the shelves then, too.

CLEARLY they are not a shop that believes 'no means no'

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 26/01/2017 16:42

They have a child's craft session in one of the shops.

TheBruteSquad · 26/01/2017 16:44

Eeeew. Regretting buying my DH's Valentine's card from there now.

It's not one of those though! It says 'you're my lobster' (or similar). Also not aimed at teenagers, but for entirely different reasons!

RJnomore1 · 26/01/2017 16:45

They have them in scribbler too. I saw them through the window! In Glasgow central station shop this morning.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 26/01/2017 16:45

What the lobster card say inside?

RB68 · 26/01/2017 16:48

Maybe we could have a mass protest and go in and turn them all over they will soon get fed up

Cakingbad · 26/01/2017 16:51

If my teenage DD got one of those cards at school I would take fucking Paperchase to court.

BornFreeButinChains · 26/01/2017 16:54

email them folks or tell them via social media somehow Smile

Sidge · 26/01/2017 16:55

I like a smutty card (I recently bought the one shown here) but these are just vile.

They're not even witty or amusing or vaguely loving and respectful (I think the LoveLayla ones are much better), they're just gross.

Scribbler are known for selling a huge range of crude / sexual stuff though, in amongst some witty / edgy stuff.

Some rude jokes are funny. Some rude messages are affectionate. Plenty of stuff is not suitable for children - fine. But nasty, sexist, coercive sexual stuff on the high street? No thanks, Paperchase.

Idiots.

I bet their market only includes a significant male spend for Mother's Day and Valentine's. I am sure Paperchase has far more female shoppers.

How to piss folk off!

ShowOfHands · 26/01/2017 16:59

Given the statistics on how many girls feel obliged to have anal sex, how pressurised they can be and the injuries which occur as a result, you'd think this sort of thing would be utterly verboten. It's a disgusting failure of joined up thinking.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 26/01/2017 17:06

Those cards are 'sad', 'pathetic', and 'not their best'. They only deserve a TrumpTwitter level of insult.

ShowofHands good point, I know a university not too far from me had a sign 'No means yes, and yes means anal' hanging up outside a frat house. Nice.

EddieStobbart · 26/01/2017 17:09

A Scribbler opened near where I worked so I had a look and was quite taken aback by how rude so many of the cards were. I didn't realise that chat had gone quite so mainstream. Sounds like Paperchase feels their market share is being eaten into and has decided "broaden" their range. Shame.

There are a couple of fantastic independent card shops round my way, I'll just head straight to them in future and not bother checking out Paperchase.

phoe6e · 26/01/2017 17:10

Ughh grim

ArriettyClock1 · 26/01/2017 17:42

Last night, I sent their customer services a link to this thread and have just had the following reply -

'Thank you for contacting Paperchase Customer Services.

We stock a wide selection of cards for each seasonal event and try to ensure we have a card suitable for all customer tastes. We recognise that this year a few of our Valentine’s cards are more ‘adult’ in nature and with this in mind we instructed our stores to display them on top shelves with a corresponding shelf sign that says ‘Rude cards here. You have been warned’. However, following their recent launch in store we have listened to the customer feedback we have received and have removed the offending cards from display with immediate effect.

We sincerely hope you continue to shop at Paperchase and thank you for bringing your feedback and honesty on these lines to our attention.

Kind regards,

Shauna
Paperchase Customer Service Team'

WOW!
Well done vipers

Keeptrudging · 26/01/2017 17:55

Excellent. It's a bit worrying that they don't seem to know their core market very well though.

QuimReaper · 26/01/2017 18:26

WOAH! Amazing!

And major props to Paperchase for responding to feedback.

SixthSenseless · 26/01/2017 18:28

The Management are probably busy holding a serious meeting with the two teen Nuts readers and the ageing convicted sex pest who run the buying and merchandising departments....

GoesDownLikeACupOfColdSick · 26/01/2017 18:28

I suspect that they are just trying anything to flog more cards, given how many people just send e-cards these days. And got it very very wrong!

It doesn't offend me personally, but it's just pointless. If it ain't funny, there ain't no point in being crude!

Tikky · 26/01/2017 18:31

That's a great response from paperchase. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Well done them for responding so promptly.
