The man next to me on the train is eating walnuts by using them to scoop butter from a whole block which he has just opened. AIBU to find this odd?

Butter on weetabix was quite normal when I was growing up.

Dubious that butter (or any oil) in coffee could help weight loss, though having read about it here maybe the oilslick effect just puts you off eating.

And this is why I have had to eat a sandwich in the train toilet.... I would hate to be judged by someone who is so interested in what I'm doing.

Zippidydoodah · 27/01/2017 08:09

I just googled "ketogenic" diet and it sounds dangerous to me?! My child has ketotic hypoglycaemia and I have it in my mind that ketones are bad.

Anyway, I'm no expert! If it is a helpful diet for epileptics then that's really interesting.

It's a great way to increase your fat intake on Atkins. I was eating 70% of my calories from fat when I did it and the weight dropped off. Coffee blended with butter, coconut oil and double cream tastes like the most decadent coconutty latte and kept me full all morning.

Thanks, banivani I think we will try it just for the novelty. I'm sure one of my DCs will like it and probably scoff the whole pot in one sitting

banivani · 27/01/2017 09:24

fuckoff (so sorry, but I had to abbreviate like that, I'm sure you understand Grin ) Do try and report back! Unless hideously expensive. Had no idea you could buy it abroad at all! There's also a brown cheese made from whey that is mostly a Norwegian thing (have you seen Skam? you can see them eating sandwiches with brown cheese in it) but also made in the north of Sweden. Very peculiar. We bought it the once and when we tried it we went omg that's awful yuck yuck let me just try one more piece no no terrible just one more piece - sort of not nice but nice? What we in Swedish call yuckynice. ;)

FuckOffDailyMailQuitQuotingMN · 27/01/2017 09:38

It's £3.29 for a 450gm tub which one Swedish reviewer says is twice as expensive as in Sweden but for a novelty it's inexpensive. There are several Swedish reviewers who are very nostalgic about it having grown up eating it. However I can't get over reading that some Swedish people eat it on meatballs Shock

Haven't seen any skam - will keep an eye out!

banivani · 27/01/2017 09:54

Skam is the telly series that's sweeping the world, sorry, not the brown cheese. ;) For the cheese look for "brunost" or "mesost".

3.29 is ok for a novelty. If you start a youtube channel of your reactions to odd foods then you could get your money back. ;)

FuckOffDailyMailQuitQuotingMN · 27/01/2017 10:11

😂 Ok, will also look up Skam (to watch)

There's more veg inLCHF than Atkins

Nomorechickens · 27/01/2017 20:13

Atkins is steak fried in butter and salad with dressing, not so much slabs if butter on their own. We did a healthy version with lean meat and olive oil, worked very well.
My dad ate loads of butter and other animal fats all his life, had a stroke at 55 and switched to Flora.

SherbrookeFosterer · 27/01/2017 20:25

It's a sort of variation on peanut butter, only...er...not...

augustbody · 27/01/2017 20:45

I've never tried a bulletproof coffee but it sounds like it would have you shitting through the eye of a needle. Which may be the point i guess!

kateandme · 27/01/2017 21:22

they are making nutbutters everywhere.they are this months/years 'thing' almond butter, nut butter.so many trending recipes showing how to make your own nut butters so I guess he doing it his way!

boo2410 · 28/01/2017 00:17

I'll see your mayo and raise you a spoonful of coleslaw rolled up in a bit of ham

Now that combination is bloody delicious. As is egg roll (round pieces of luncheon meat with egg in the middle) with coleslaw wrapped up in it.

picklemepopcorn · 28/01/2017 06:23

Sliced cheese spread with peanut butter...

Lots of leafy veg in LCHF. Leeks, sprouts, spinach, cauli, broccoli...

You need the high fat, because protein metabolises into glycogen (?).

Purplealienpuke · 28/01/2017 06:24

I'm more concerned you said he has a sharp knife???
Move seats...... very quickly 😂

nooka · 28/01/2017 06:42

Nut butters don't have any butter in them, they are just whizzed up nuts (except for SunPat type stuff which is full of added sugar and oil). Buttery coffee sounds disgusting!

My dh used to bodybuild, the high calorie diet is for bulking up, not cutting down. Khetosis diets for epilepsy are quite complicated. My nephew was on one for a while and everything was very carefully measured out (eg he'd have to have weighed out portions of skimmed milk and double cream instead of milk for example in order to get the right proportions). Highly unlikely that the OP's traveling companion was doing that, sounds much too haphazard. Plus khetosis breath is very distinctive (dh used to go into khetosis sometimes when he was bulking up and his breath was really nasty (not so much bad as really wrong smelling).

Most likely just really faddy dieting. Or just very odd eating - maybe he was really a pregnant woman with cravings Grin?

HerBluebiro · 28/01/2017 09:48

Tried it. Actually really nice! Cool lurpak spreadable on walnuts.

I might do it again

banivani · 28/01/2017 11:39

I tried it too this morning coz I happened to notice the walnuts sitting there and I thought it was decidedly meh. :/

HerBluebiro · 28/01/2017 12:35

I've decided it hits the same sort of spot for me as Jacobs water biscuits and butter. Tasty

curlilox · 28/01/2017 13:19

If he consumes the entire block, won't his blood be pretty much neat cholesterol!

impishgal77 · 29/01/2017 00:45

Nutbutter guffaw
Just found out this week what nutbutter is. A little bit of sick came up when I read the definition on urban dictionary
