To not know why mn has an issue with parking on the pavement?

I have my driveway but the street I live in is quite long (has 3 postcodes) and there's always cars parked along the pavements.

I see it everywhere.

Who honestly has never parked on a pavement?

Why is it such an issue?

Gah. We've had one on the pavement near us all day. Drive is empty. Car parks entire width of pavement, just before a bend. This means I can't cross the road because I can't see what's coming around the bend so I have to walk into road with DD and dog.

AIBU to wonder why they can't park on their bloody drive?

MargaretCabbage · 24/01/2017 22:33

I frequently end up having to walk on the road with my baby in a pushchair and my toddler on reins because somebody selfish has decided to park on the pavement without leaving any room. It's really dangerous when a van does this as I can't see round them to see if there's any incoming traffic. Sometimes people park on the pavement leaving a little gap that we can manage to squeeze through if we walk through overgrown nettles or brambles. In my street people park on the pavement outside of their houses because they're too lazy to walk the 30 seconds from their allocated space.

It's annoying enough having a pushchair but it makes me feel really angry for wheelchair users.

So many posters here firmly believe that if pavement parking is twatty and perfectly avoidable in their own, it must be so everywhere across the land

I think its more that pavement parking is illegal, with good reason, so your circumstances are of little interest.

MommaGee · 24/01/2017 22:35

If you think the road is good enough for my disabled child, then it's almost definitely good enough for your precious car.

This with bells on. Ime most pavement Parker's don't bother to leave a reasonable gap. There's cars always parked opposite the shops by me. I can just get past with the pushchair but no way would a double or an adult wheelchair. Its a main road with buses and lorries. The car parks between the traffic lights and the bus stop so can't even cross over just have to go in the road.

On the other hand, one of the estates I worked on, if they'd all parked on the road, no way would an ambulance or fire engine have got down there. Many estates simply aren't designed for the number of cars we have

user1484317265 · 24/01/2017 22:35

Not being able to use a pavement is a pain, but in our town the alternative is much worse

So your argument is that cars are more important than people, and you're fine with wheelchairs having to try and use the road just so you can park in front of your house.
You're a bit of an asshat, aren't you?

JigglyTuff · 24/01/2017 22:37

Perhaps your street should have double yellows if it's that narrow Autumn

Longdistance · 24/01/2017 22:37

It's called a pavement for a reason. It's for walking on, not parking your crappy car on.

AutumnMadness · 24/01/2017 22:38

user1484317265, so how come I've not ever been ticketed for it nor know anyone who has been in over a decade of living in my current area? Surely it's enough time for the local council to suss out a massive new source of revenue. Perhaps pavement parking is not as illegal as you think and rather an application of common sense and human decency is required in judging whether you can/should park on the pavement or not.

AutumnMadness · 24/01/2017 22:39

JigglyTuff, well, it does not.

user1484317265 · 24/01/2017 22:39

something doesn't become less illegal just because you haven't been caught.

What human decency? You park on the pavement in a manner that you admit makes prams and wheelchairs use the road. You don't have any human decency.

Salmotrutta · 24/01/2017 22:43

People parking on pavements are usually arse holes who won't walk the length of themselves if they can avoid it.

Pavements were designed for pedestrians.

Not areseholes.

I've never parked on a pavement.

Why would I ever have to?

I can't envisage any scenario where actually parking up on a pavement is okay?

Pulling in briefly onto a pavement to let an emergency vehicle get past is a different thing.

As any non-arsehole knows.

AutumnMadness · 24/01/2017 22:44

user1484317265, can you read? Honestly? Where did I say that cars are more important than people? I am a person, not a car. I am a pregnant woman. I am grateful that all my neighbours park on the pavement because this will allow an ambulance to get to me in an emergency. There is an elderly infirm man that lives up the street and has an ambulance called to his house every three months or so. He is also not a car and it's important that an ambulance is able to get to him.

cantmakeme · 24/01/2017 22:49

My daughter's school does not have any parking for parents dropping off. The road is very thin. Therefore those of us who drop off there have to park halfway up on the pavement. Yes, lots of dirty looks from people walking. Wing mirror clipped off. Can't believe people on here admitting that they damage other people's cars deliberately, though.

I've had to walk with a pushchair in the past, and sometimes people's cars were in the way - it can be annoying. I managed not to damage their cars though.

NickyEds · 24/01/2017 22:49

Park where exactly?

On. The. Road. Not the pavement. If the road isn't wide enough for you to park on it and emergency services then find somewhere else.

QuinionsRainbow · 24/01/2017 22:56

If the road isn't wide enough for you to park on it and emergency services then find somewhere else

And this is surely the heart of the issue. So many people think that by parking partly on the pavement at locations where it would be unsafe to park on the road somehow changes a dangerous situation into a safe one.

ZackyVengeance · 24/01/2017 22:58

I hate it
I hate that it means i have to take my dds wheelchair into the road and put her life in danger.

AutumnMadness · 24/01/2017 22:58

Now, this is approximately what I am talking about. Now imagine a whole town with streets just like this one. And there is no magic massive parking lot nearby to take all the cars off these streets and pavements. And yes, buggy users, wheelchair users, scooter users, people with young children and people who are not in wheelchairs but have other physical disabilities and happen to live in these streets also park their cars on the pavement. I do get that parking on the pavement is twatty in many cases, but there are also cases where it is unavoidable.

To not know why mn has an issue with parking on the pavement?
MixedUpConfusion · 24/01/2017 22:59

It's illegal where I live, they even have a form on council website to report people. Quite rightly, too.

Yamadori · 24/01/2017 22:59

I had the misfortune to attend a Town Council meeting once (for another reason) but while I was there the subject of nuisance pavement parking came up. Apparently, not only is it illegal, but the weight of vehicles eventually causes damage to the utilities running along underneath the path. Things like gas and water pipes. Where there are dropped kerbs for access to driveways, the pavement has been underpinned and reinforced to protect the pipework.

namechange20050 · 24/01/2017 23:00

There are entire neighbourhoods in Brighton where everyone parks on the pavement. Narrow Victorian streets are the cause.

namechange20050 · 24/01/2017 23:01

Autumn madness yes I agree with you. Just the kind of situation I was referring to.

sweetkitty · 24/01/2017 23:01

Oh this boils my piss as well. Lazy buggers who can't park on the other side of the road or walk no they have to get as much of their car on the pavement as possible. Then when they are pulling away they look at you in disgust because you won't wait for them to get off the pavement as your walking on it.

ZackyVengeance · 24/01/2017 23:02

Ahh wellif it's unavoidable to park on pavements
Don't winge if a wheelchair or buggy scrapes your car due to lack of room

KanyeWesticle · 24/01/2017 23:04

I've never parked on the pavement. If i did, where we live I'd be forcing wheelchair and pushchair users onto the muddy verge. That pavement is theirs, not mine. I can park further away and walk. I do think two wheels on the curb is different, and sometimes, unavoidable.

Spikeyball · 24/01/2017 23:07

All my local pavement parkers have drives but can't be arsed to use them.
