I have my driveway but the street I live in is quite long (has 3 postcodes) and there's always cars parked along the pavements.

I see it everywhere.

Who honestly has never parked on a pavement?

Why is it such an issue?

Roads are for cars
Not pavements

Prompto · 24/01/2017 20:15

The pedestrian route from our street to the main road is up a lane, the lane intersects a pavement where it comes out at road. A few months ago some absolute bell-end took to parking on the pavement across the top of the lane with no room to go around. It was literally like a T - the vertical bit being the lane and the cross bar being the car. The owner soon stopped when I took to boosting DS over his bonnet.

manhowdy · 24/01/2017 20:17

Car drivers who do not leave enough space on the pavement for wheelchairs or buggies send me nuclear. It's disgustingly selfish. Obstruct the traffic, not pedestrians. I have had many an argument over this.

RoundTheBend · 24/01/2017 20:18

I just asked the Police.

"The penalty for contravening this will be a fixed penalty notice. Otherwise, parking a vehicle on the pavement could lead to an offence of obstruction being committed. This could result in a fixed penalty notice being issued to offending vehicles. It can also cause danger/nuisance for pedestrians and wheelchairs users".

PerspicaciaTick · 24/01/2017 20:19

Round where I live, the builders have stopped putting in pavements. They use different coloured pavers along one side of the road to "indicate" where the pavement would be if there was one. TBH it is a bit of a free for all, but not really any more inconvenient than having a real pavement with car parked on it.

Millie04 · 24/01/2017 20:22

As far as i know it's an offence in the Highway Code to park on pavements. Why would you? What is wrong with staying on the road? Problem is as soon as one car does it the whole street thinks it's a good idea. Less pavement space for buggies and parents who like to keep hold of their children's hands when walking. I'm pretty sure you can be fined.

JigglyTuff · 24/01/2017 20:23

Why park on the pavement at all? Park on the road. If the road isn't wide enough for you to park without causing an obstruction, park somewhere else

hookiewookie29 · 24/01/2017 20:28

I think the main issue is this.....
Like thousands of streets in the UK, ours is pre war. So it's not that wide as many people didn't have cars then. When we moved here 19 years ago, most people had at least one car...our particular row of houses don't have garages so we had to park on the road with two wheels on the path.It is impossible to park with all four wheels on the road because, if we did that, and the people opposite did it, then nobody would get down the road! Fast forward to now...nearly every house has more than one car, and most have had front gardens turned into drives, so you can imagine the amount of vehicles that are sometimes parked down our street!
I'm a pushchair user...single and double......so know how frustrating it is when drivers park too far on the path. They've obviously never been in that situation and just don't think. However, I would never resort to criminal damage by scraping my pushchair handle down the side of the car. A little note on the windscreen is more legal....

YouTheCat · 24/01/2017 20:29

Park somewhere else. Pavements aren't for cars. Sorry if it's a teensy bit inconvenient for you but it fucks me off so much. There used to be an utter wanker who used to park his large car completely on the pavement forcing me and my double buggy onto a very busy road.

And what about wheelchairs? If there's no dropped kerb it can mean a person using a wheelchair might have to double back to a safe point. Why the hell should they have to do that?

museumum · 24/01/2017 20:30

We park slightly on the pavement in our road to let fire engines fit past. But I always make sure there's room for a side-by-side double buggy between my car and my garden wall. And tuck my wing mirror in.
If everyone is sensible there's no issue. I could legally park entirely on the road but we all worry a bit about emergency vehicle access for those further down, cars could pass ok but fire engines are wide.
I always double check I've left enough pedestrian space (including wheelchairs and buggies) too before leaving the car.

cookiefiend · 24/01/2017 20:33

Obstacles on the pavement can also make life much more difficult for blind people who try to get to know a route a bit then find it obstructed. It is just selfish. Round here there are no pavements wide enough to park a car on and allow a wheelchair width, but people still do it. Just no respect for anyone around them.

Trufflethewuffle · 24/01/2017 20:36

A couple of years ago we rented a house on a modern housing estate that had been so badly designed. We were the end of terrace and had a small drive on the side next to neighbour. Their bedrooms were above the drives so like an archway.

However, the drive space was so narrow that we could not park side by side. We both had small cars. So they used to use the drive and I had to park on the road. The pavement outside our front door was as wide as one and a half cars. Same situation on the opposite side of the road but because the non pavement part of the road was quite narrow, neighbour across the road had to park round the corner.

This was a nightmare when the bin lorry came around. I used to pop out when I heard the lorry coming and stick the car up on the pavement - still plenty of room for wheelchairs or pushchairs - but I used to feel so guilty.
The design of the estate could have been better thought through.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 24/01/2017 20:37

Who honestly has never parked on a pavement?

Me. I work with children and young people who have a wide range of disabilities/additional needs and pavement parkers cause damage to the pavements that can be a hazard to wheelchair user, people with visual impairments, the elderly and people who are not steady on their feet for whatever reason. People with visual impairments also struggle to get past the hazards on the footpath that shouldn't be there.

Fluffyears · 24/01/2017 20:40

The street my mil lives on has a narrow road, it was built when it many people owned a car. A few people have turned their front gardens into a drive but still very congested. After watching the chaos when an ambulance got stuck everyone now parks with two wheels on the pavement. In an emergency situation every second counts and there is nowhere else to park. There is space for pedestrians to get past, it angers me Though when folk park full car or do it on a nice wide road when there is no need!

madamginger · 24/01/2017 20:40

I park my car half on the pavement outside my house but the pavement is ridiculously wide. I could park fully on it and you could still get past, it's half tarmac and half paving stones, the one on the other side of the road is the same and the road is single car width.
If we didn't park on the pavement you would block the road, but I never pavement park anywhere else, I remember trying to get prams and toddlers past badly parked cars and I wouldn't want to inflict that on someone else.

Sunnymeg · 24/01/2017 20:41

It is illegal to drive onto a pavement and if you park on a pavement you have to drive onto it. Therefore.......

Spikeyball · 24/01/2017 20:43

There are few around here who park so far on the pavement that I can't get ds's sn buggy through. I only go through if I can see their is enough room but ds sometimes kicks or hits the car as we pass it, which I can't stop.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 24/01/2017 20:48

Parking partly on the pavement is common place here - mainly because we have narrow roads & inadequate parking (new build estate).

Personally, our house does have adequate parking for our two cars - but most around have one single space.

It is definitely an issue for people with pushchairs - you often see them walking down the road, around the cars. A wheelchair user wouldn't stand a chance of using most of the pavements here TBH.

JanuaryMoods · 24/01/2017 20:55

Blind people tap their sticks along the kerb as they walk. Parking a car in their way is selfish and the act of a total prick.

picklemepopcorn · 24/01/2017 20:56

Also damages the pavement and reduces visibility for people crossing the road and using the junctions.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 24/01/2017 21:02

TAAT?!

Viasabatthe2nd · 24/01/2017 21:26

Because it means my guide dog has to walk me and my 3yo DD in to the road to get passed the selfish person that decided to park on the pavement!

MyWhatICallNameChange · 24/01/2017 21:27

It gives me the rage for all the reasons already mentioned. Plus the school run twats who drive up the pavement behind pedestrians, scaring the kids who think they're going to get run over.

I feel like walking over their cars. Or parking my arse in the middle of the road when I fancy a rest.

buckingfrolicks · 24/01/2017 21:31

I've never parked on a pavement, for what it's worth. What a ludicrous idea. Pavement - for people. Road - for cars.

FiveShelties · 24/01/2017 21:38

I don't park on the pavement either - I hate having to walk in the road to get round cars.

I also don't understand why people want to bump their cars up and down the kerb.
