I'm European.
Last night I stupidly allowed myself to rise to someone telling me to go back to where I came from.. it ended up with about 6 people arguing with me and they were adamant that foreigners are to blame for the country's problems.
It's absolutely shook me to my core.. I feel very strange today, I've never, in my 8 years here had any negative comments. Lucky I suppose.
Are people who think this way unreasonable? Are there any exceptions where immigrants are a negative thing?
Do any of you think this way?
I'm not looking to carry on arguing but this is a safe way to discuss and I would respect your opinion.
Thanks

Carol, you're right that the money might stay in Britain when we leave the EU, although this isn't certain.

What you seem to be missing is that there will probably be much less money overall.

DJBaggySmalls · 21/01/2017 12:49

HerOtherHalf
The poor pay a higher percentage than the rich in tax, as indirect taxation hits us the same.
''While the richest fifth of society paid 34.8 per cent of their overall income in tax last year, those at the bottom of the income scale lost 37.8 per cent of their income to the taxman.''

Carollocking · 21/01/2017 12:50

Why on earth will there be less money ???

toptoe · 21/01/2017 12:51

EVERYONE living in the uk comes from an immigrant family. 10 000 years ago no one lived here. Then came mesolithic people from europe, followed by many more subsequent immigrations inc. romans, angles, saxons, jutes, danes and norwegians, norman french and then more recently peoples from further afield who were invited here to work. It's all a load of tribal bollocks. Humans have always moved around. And have always had issues with sharing resources. Which is what this behaviour is about really: they want a scapegoat to blame for their problems. Us and them attitude.

Newbrummie · 21/01/2017 12:51

Charity begins at home ? Society is judged by how we treat its weakest members - I don't not mean any particular group is weak - any human that needs medical attention I'll pay for it if I can. Genuinely gob smacked another person would think differently

DoctorDonnaNoble · 21/01/2017 12:51

Pound has fallen. Businesses such has banking and technology leaving. There are more reasons.

Newbrummie · 21/01/2017 12:52

Ffs I'd pay for an animal who needed medical help. What's wrong with people

GrainOfSalt · 21/01/2017 12:52

I don't want you to leave. You are welcome here and I am sorry that there are those who believe that the luck of their birthplace should give them any more 'right' over a corner of the planet. We are a nation of immigrants, every single bloody one of us, it just depends how far you go back.

2017willbeawesome · 21/01/2017 12:53

Definitely do not want you or any other member of our wonderful communities to leave. Would happily get rid of the scummy knuckledraggers - they are the ones that don't belong.

DJBaggySmalls · 21/01/2017 12:53

IDK why you think the money will stay in the UK. Theresa May has already said we will still make payments to the EU. Its just we wont get any say in making the rules.

We did try to tell you about this pre Brexit but that was all scare mongering.

Brokenbiscuit · 21/01/2017 12:54

Because the chances are that our economic growth will slow. The value of the pound has already fallen. And if we lose the financial services sector, our even part of it, we are screwed.

schlong · 21/01/2017 12:54

I live abroad and am starting to get these kind of comments too. Espesh on the bus if I'm with the toddler hperactive 6 yo and cumbersome buggy. They're fuckers and just wanto take their own petty socioeconomic frustrations out on someone they perceive as weaker. It's making me contemplate moving back to the UK. Times are pretty shite all round and we're being groomed to turn on each other instead of the criminals at the top.

toptoe · 21/01/2017 12:55

I don't personally believe brexit is possible in this day and age in the way those who voted for it want it to happen. That's because so many uk citizens also live in Europe. The gov are going to keep stalling and diverting attention away from it. Their handy a &e crisis (which they caused) has kept us distracted lately.

Carollocking · 21/01/2017 12:55

I'm very happy help those in need and my point of charity begins at home is exactky that we have homeless here we have old people needing heating and numerous other things once we are a country without problems then look elsewhere, fix the home problems first is my opinion

toptoe · 21/01/2017 12:57

exactly schlong - divide and conquer, make us squabble, distract our attention from what is really happening

DJBaggySmalls · 21/01/2017 12:58

Thats great come back in 4 years when those problems at home have been fixed and show us all how its done then.

On the other hand if things are worse, take responsibility for voting for that.

Carollocking · 21/01/2017 12:58

im very happy simple as that

Brokenbiscuit · 21/01/2017 12:58

If our economy tanks, Carol, we won't be able to help anyone.

DoctorDonnaNoble · 21/01/2017 12:59

Carol - we have the money to do those things already. We choose to spend it on nuclear submarines instead.
EU membership sounds like it's expensive. It isn't. It is a tiny fraction of the money that the government spends.

Brokenbiscuit · 21/01/2017 13:00

im very happy simple as that

Yes indeed, very simple.

Bitofacow · 21/01/2017 13:01

Not in my name.
These people do not speak for me.
I feel ashamed to be connected to them in any way.
Not in my name.

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 21/01/2017 13:02

Some of the elderly and homeless people you speak of are immigrants, it's not as simple as saying "sort things out at home first". I think that a lot of people (not all!) voted Brexit as a fuck you to the system, much like the reasons that Trump is now POTUS, without having a clue what the fuck was going to happen.
The U.K. economy is fragile enough, without leaving the single market, negating trade agreements and pushing up the cost of living. Which is exactly what Brexit will do. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

MissVictoria · 21/01/2017 13:03

As long as those genuinely capable of working and contributing to society and community do so, i couldn't care less if they were born here, moved here as a child, or moved here by choice as an adult.
People living here who can work but choose instead to play the system for as much in benefits as they can get, including having multiple children for the benefits boost, are the people i wish weren't here, regardless if they were born and raised or moved here for the free money.
There are a lot of very highly skilled workers of all trades who move here and they are integral to the future of the country. Doctors, carpenters, builders, we need these people, and anyone who doesn't see that has tunnel vision.
If everyone who wasn't born here was suddenly "sent home" (sorry that is a horrible term but wasn't sure how else to word it) the country would grind to a halt and the small minded people would quickly realise how wrong they were.

BakeOffBiscuits · 21/01/2017 13:03

IMO the only good thing about coming out of the EU is those who voted OUT won't be able to keep blaming immigration for all of our problems.

The problems with NHS, houing, overcrowding etc, couldn't possibly be because govts have done fuck all, about investing in our infrastructure. No, it's all the immigrant faultHmm.

Carollocking · 21/01/2017 13:03

I'm happy as I say
