AIBU to want posters to stop saying that someone 'is' ASD?

It's not a taat because it's across multiple threads. Someone can have an ASD or have autism or even, if you must, be autistic. But no one is ASD.

Well okay manumission, the fault is obviously with me then if I don't know what I am writing.
Thanks for clearing that up - it's undoubtedly the only explanation.

Manumission · 19/01/2017 22:44

Well what do you want to say when you launch an aggressive an attack telling me I'm misrepresenting you and then deny that you did anything of the sort. ALL when I was referencing other posters in the first place.

I can't scroll enough on a phone to follow what on earth's going on here.

I'm off to hit the hobnobs. Doubles.

"If you're not on the spectrum you're not coming in.''
awesome! Grin

Who knew that hobnobs were such a leveller?
I'll have a naked hobnob anytime.

CloudPerson · 19/01/2017 22:58

I believe that "Everyone is on the spectrum" may be courtesy of Simon Baron-Cohen (may be wrong though) and he grates on many autistic people, he of the Male Brain, No Empathy bollocks.

PussInCoutts · 19/01/2017 22:58

zzzzz etc, I too detest the HFA/LFA thing, but what are the alternatives?

I'd be very pleased to learn!

Currently I just refer to myself as HFA when it comes up because people seem so very puzzled when I don't present as the (male-based) stereotype and they ask questions as if I'm just making it up. Fully agree it stigmatises LFA and is not therefore the ideal solution...

CloudPerson OMG Baron-Cohen grates on me too. The no empathy stereotype is harmful and discriminatory in so many ways.

Solely because of that stereotype I did not even consider the possibility of AS for years when I was looking for an explanation for my issues. It was only upon coming across some Tony Attwood etc when I started thinking, hold on... (Since then I've been officially dx)

zzzzzz I didn't mention IQ at all.

Is that how HFA is defined?

I just don't know how else to tell people I have it. They get very puzzled, yet it's an important part of my identity so I don't keep it hidden...

Thanks zzzzz for the explanation
What are other options to describe one's condition then?

PussInCoutts · 19/01/2017 23:12

F1ipFlopFrus exactly. Any ideas how this guy happens to be one of the go-to experts for autism?

I just really don't get it, his theory is so inaccurate and misleading on so many levels..

The thing is zzzz when you're trying to make some broad brush distinction between the needs of a uni student and the needs of someone who is non-verbal, you need some vocabulary to do that. For everyone's benefit.

Aspergers has gone from the DSM-V, so is losing some of its official sanction. So we're left with HFA:LFA, neither of which are great.

But part of the reason discussions like this get sparky, is that the whole spectrum gets lumped in together by the terminology. It's not helpful.

Manumission · 19/01/2017 23:24

Quite often the cross-purposes are palpable in written discussion in what kind of needs/client group/presentation various posters are picturing from the same term.

It doesn't aid public understanding, either.

It was very difficult for everyone to answer rorty's questions (although they were very welcome questions I'm sure) because the sure size of the thing you need to cover is immense. It's hard for people to get a handle on a single "condition" with so many presentations.
