To be livid about this FB shite

A person I know on Facebook (we worked together briefly about 10 years ago but are not actual friends) posted this on FB this afternoon.

I know I know, decried them. Unfortunately though this is something I've heard before and it makes me so angry! I want to write something on it but I can't really put into words (that an obvious moron would understand) what makes me so angry about it.

Really? Do none of you think it's bad that women are routinely compared to objects?

Sorry but men and women are objects in this, just keys and locks, that's all :)

Shitty locks, MPerspective. thats all.

In all seriousness, I'd imagine this was written as a joke - but it is very basic humour and thus, not funny for us intelligent witty users over here.

The reality is that women are not even equal to men but far more overpowering.

I'm bemused that anyone dismisses this as a silly joke. This stuff bothers me because |I care about women and girls and I am sick of the bullshit we have to put up with. Call him out on it, then unfriend him.

It's not a silly joke. It's just reinforcing everyday sexism. Pathetic.

Meh. It's sexist, its stupid, it doesn't even make sense.

But livid about it? Fuck no. I save livid for the other, more important stuff that actually impacts immediately. This depresses me, but it doesn't make me angry.

Warwick It's a tired old stereotype that nobody with half a brain cell (male or female) would find funny or clever. I don't think I'd be getting irate about it. There's so much stupidity in the world to get irate about. I wouldn't pick a FB gif for it.

I usually reply to this "joke" with the assertion that a pencil that's been in a lot of pencil sharpeners is a nubby little useless pencil.

Report
Upforathird · 18/01/2017 16:34

Warwick you HAVE to reply with one of those responses. DO IT, DO IT, DO IT!

I have had this answer given to me in all seriousness by someone justifying this stupid double standard.

It takes two seconds to work out that it's answering the question 'why are men expected to have loads of sex with loads of people and women expected to have very little sex with very few people?' with the answer 'because men are supposed to have loads of sex with loads of people and women supposed to have very little sex with very few people." Wow, logic.

And no, it's not funny. This is a joke, but the attitude behind it causes a huge amount of unnecessary bullshit for both women and men.

Report
Birdsgottafly · 18/01/2017 16:37

You'd find that it impacted on you, if you were the victim of rape/sexual assault and how your sexual history decided your Character and whether you'd been a victim, or was just bitter.

The attitude displayed does impact on us, daily.

If it showed a Black person having to behave differently from a white person, to be a valid member of society and not 'shitty', it wouldn't be allowed, but a Women? That's fine.

It isn't jokey, it's saying that any Woman who has multiple partners is "shitty", unlike a man who can do what he wants.

This leads to us being seen as the gatekeepers of sex, which is dangerous.

Facebook is full of shit. If shit offends you, don't use it. Simples.

I think letting yourself become "livid" over something on facebook is a waste of energy. Delete her (or just delete your own fb) and move on.

I'm tempted to copy TheOtherSocks post and pop it in the comments.

I'd love to be brave enough to put Sunshines reply on though.

I know some people think I'm overreacting but it does affect all women a bit doesn't it? If this kind of "joke" is seen as acceptable what does that really say about attitudes towards women? I know it's just one person on my Fb who posted it but the page he shared it from has a lot of likes and shares so it must be a more widely held view than I thought it was.

It's quite simple - your friends are dickheads.

Unfriend them (after sending a witty/enlightening response as above) and find some nicer non-sexists jerks to be friends with.

Sniv · 18/01/2017 16:46

Haha, I think coffeeslave's pencil analogy is the perfect comeback. I'm going to remember that one!

Warwick A lot of people like stuff on FB just to be friendly. Either that or they think it's meant tongue in cheek, slightly ironically, a bit deliberately provocative, designed to wind some people up - it could be any controversial topic, it just happened to be that particular one.

TO be honest if you post a clever response back you'll be seen as joining in with the "fun". If you really care about it, make your point directly. As in "That's sexist, outdated crap which means you are sexist and outdated for pathetically posting it for likes".

THis is awful and you are not over reacting. The fact that people put this in the "silly joke" category is why the patriarchy is alive and well and always will be. I don't get how misogyny is ever funny or "silly".

It's sad that there are so many men who really do hate women. Ugh.

Report

It's nasty misogynistic rubbish and I wouldn't bother with someone who posted that kind of shit.

Story about Napoleon (may not be true) An aristocratic lady appeared before him to complain that one of his senior officers had raped her. He took his sword out of his scabbard and asked that she put the sword back in. He showed that if he kept the scabbard moving the lady couldn't penetrate it.

The lady asked Napoleon to pass the scabbard to the lowest status officer present. With a raised eyebrow, he did so. As soon as the new man started moving the scabbard about she raised the sword, cut his hand off, picked up the scabbard and rammed the sword home. Point made. Bet it's apocryphal, though.

I really disagree with the posters saying "if FB/a FB joke/ FB shit offends you don't use it. Why shouldn't she?

If something is offensive it doesn't matter where it is, and if OP is offended by misogynistic nonsense than good on her.
