To think it's common sense to let a w/c user have the w/c spot

SparkyStar84 · 18/01/2017 14:41

I've just seen the ruling on disabled people getting priority in disabled spots on buses. Isn't that common sense. What kind of person would deny a w/c user the space because 'pushchair'?
I'm a w/c user it makes it easier in a way to get about with children, though I know some w/c users still have a buggy.
This is about the parents who refuse to move, when asked, by someone who might have an appt or something important to get too. Not saying the parent doesn't. But isn't that the point of foldable buggies over great big travel systems?
It just bugs me that people have had to leave the bus because a parent wouldn't move. As a parent with kids of many ages, also remembering times gone by, the purpose of easy foldable buggies is that you can decamp when on the bus.
Do you think it's an issue that buses need to provide buggy spaces too?

Trifleorbust . Firstly babies are portable and although it would be a total pain in the arse buggies can be collapsed. People in wheelchairs can't collapse their wheelchair as they require the chair to meet their mobility needs. Very selfish viewpoint. Regularly to collapse my buggy but I don't moan coz it means the guy who often need the space can get to work. Circumstances should be different for people who have specific buggies for children with disabilities. Get a grip?

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 18/01/2017 21:20

I think 'flying' is a little bit of an exaggeration for hitting the seat in front, but okay.

If the driver BRAKES that hard, then what about the elderly, the disabled etc? They are just as likely to be injured.

(And I wouldn't normally pick up on spelling because it's totally wanky but after pointing out to me so patronisingly about Newton's law, I don't care)

GreenGinger2 · 18/01/2017 21:21

No I don't like how people are saying what they are saying. There is no need frankly. It is perfectly possible to put views across in a nicer manner.

JanuaryMoods · 18/01/2017 21:23

If Trifle was a teenage girl, your daughter would you be happy with this kind of thread because I wouldn't.

I'd think she deserved all she got. Fortunately, I didn't rear disablist DCs, so it doesn't apply.

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 18/01/2017 21:25

And how many times, exactly, do you expect them to be put across politely and calmly, being met with utter arrogance and disablism from the person replying every single time?
I've spent years coming up against attitudes like the ones on here, sadly, will probably spend many more doing the same banging-my-head-against-brick-wall thing every time. Because I will, until attitudes which marginalise, dismiss and minimise the needs of people with disabilities are eradicated. Because they are wrong, they are harmful and they cause untold damage.

The difference in a big pram is that the straps hold the baby in and the outside of the pram can provide some protection in a sudden breaking situation.
The through the windscreen was referring to what happens in cars, as a passenger on a bus the baby is more likely to fly into a seat, a metal bar or any other object on the bus. In that situation a major injury could occur from a sudden breaking incident, not a major crash.
When women did take children out of buggies, it wasn't unusal to see a toddler's face or teeth hit those low level metal hand rails on the back of seats. With little babies the danger to them is greater.
I'm just saying neither situation is right and changes need to made for the transport of the disabled and young babies.

GingerIvy · 18/01/2017 21:27

I've been putting these views across politely for the past 7-8 years. How many more years before people realise they're being selfish?

FizzBombBathTime · 18/01/2017 21:28

Green the reasonable and explanatory approach did not work. You can't reason with stupid as has been said on this thread.

PetalMettle · 18/01/2017 21:31

Haven't rtft. Before my little one was sitting I had him in a pram. I wasn't comfortable using a sling as I have epilepsy and was worried about having a seizure and falling on him.

However I always got off the bus if a wheelchair user wanted to get on as they have priority.

user1484766714 · 18/01/2017 21:32

Livia- darling, I wish you well. When I get my guide dog and I am abused in the street I will just think that the person met too many people like you and will try to kill them with kindness, so the next disabled person doesn't get the same treatment as me.
It is women like you that got feminism the feminazi title and set all woman back. I hope you don't do the same to disabled rights!

BishopBrennansArse · 18/01/2017 21:35

Re the hard braking - last week this happened and despite the magnetic brakes and manual brakes being on on my powerchair I flew across the bus and got the seat opposite bending my toes the wrong way.

There is very little control in a chair.

user1484766714 · 18/01/2017 21:35

I'm not replying to anything else, you lot just want to abuse each other. You don't want to play nice. X X X

I have a stupid travel system that I'm sick to the back teeth off - I can't get rid of it for reasons I won't bore you with.

I use buses in London, I will park in the wheelchair space if it's empty and absolutely wouldn't hesitate to get off the bus if a wheelchair needed to park in the wheelchair space.

People that don't move are arseholes. End of.

MysticTwat · 18/01/2017 21:39

By then userblahblahblah your last couple posts were very revealing Grin

User1484766714. You've said what I wanted to say much more eloquently than I could have put it

You can't argue with stupid ignorant entitled arrogant twats people.

That's why we need legislation to protect the rights of the vulnerable.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 18/01/2017 21:46

User I totally disagree with pushchairs taking precedence over wheelchairs - I'm actually agreeing with you. I just don't agree with the language you use.

As for feminism I'm as far away from identifying as a feminist as it is possible to be.

I always give my seat up for disabled or older people.

You can't prioritise wheelchairs and buggies so obviously wheelchairs should always come first.

Chippednailvarnishing · 18/01/2017 21:46

Livia- darling

Maybe user when you come to post on your second MN thread you might want to cut the patronising "darling".
I don't believe for one minute that you have seen "too many babies go flying". I've used buses for years and never seen anyone go flying. I have however seen people get off a busy bus to let a wheelchair user on, so hopefully maybe the majority of people in RL aren't reflected by some of the posters on this thread.

GingerIvy · 18/01/2017 21:46

The fact that legislation and court cases were even needed for this pretty much says it all.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 18/01/2017 21:47

And yes - stick your sarcasm and your kisses. That's what happens when someone actually agrees with you is it? Hmm

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 18/01/2017 21:49

This ^^

And Flowers for those who have to deal with a disability and ignorant wankers - it's a position that any one of us could be in.

AliceInUnderpants · 18/01/2017 21:52

FFS are MNHQ still endorsing this kind of absolute shite?

Unless your PFB is in one of these, you fucking fold it!
