Car has been clamped

I bought a car last night which my friend bought round for me, I've got up this morning to tax it so I can drive it as I've looked out the window it is being clamped for being untaxed. I ran out of the house to find out what was happening and told them I had just bought it and am taxing it I have proof of purchase plus email from dvla to show it's taxed but they are refusing to remove the clamp unless I pay £100 for it only being on 11 mins.
Is there anything I can do? I've had to get my mum to take dcs to school and there's no way I can get to work

You could pay the £100 release fee. Why did you not tax it last night? It's easy to do online and they don't take payment straight away.

You should have taxed it before you parked it on the road.

Tax isn't transferable now so you have to tax it before you purchase the vehicle. Expensive lesson I'm afraid but the proof of purchase would have been the proof they needed to know it wasn't taxed.

Your only option is to pay it. I would phone the dvla to make sure it's legit first though!

If it was parked on the road and untaxed then it was illegal no matter how short a period of time it was

I didn't park it my friend dropped it off as I bought it off her she posted the keys through my letterbox as o was asleep she thought it was still taxed as she was paying by direct debit.
I know that as a new owner I have to tax it myself which is why I was doing it before I drove it.

It's not taxed though. The law changed a while back. When the owner sells it the road tax immediately expires, regardless of how long is left. It is the responsibility of the new owner to tax it before taking it on the road.

You've got no choice but to pay up - lesson learned!

It must have been untaxed for s while. I couldn't afford to tax mine as I lost my job once for 6 months on road parking. I got two warnings before it was clamped.

Had she already cancelled or not renewed her tax ? Did you tax it for January?

If you've just bought it how do the DVLA know, or has your friend not had it taxed?
Can you change ownership online now and that's passed me by?

Had the log book been signed over and posted off? Otherwise it sounds like if it's not taxed it was actually her responsibility

midnight it is taxed! I know the law has changed which is why I taxed it when I woke up this morning as I had just got the keys and logbook/green slip.

If the DVLA systems think it's not taxed, either she's not taxed it for January, or the documents on change of ownership were sent off a while ago in which case you would have known to tax it from that point, surely?

So it was taxed as of this morning but not last night - so presumably she informed DVLA online yesterday that the car had been sold but it was left on the road untaxed over night?

There's no way the dvla would know it was untaxed between her bringing it round and you taxing it this morning. She can't have taxes it or perhaps if she had it off the road it had been declared as SORN and it then got clamped as obviously it was on the road.

You can tell DVLA online of a change of ownership now yes, which means the tax in your name becomes immediately void and the new owner needs to pay the tax immediately.

If you taxed it this morning why did you not show them the confirmation email? This will have the time you taxed the car/they sent the confirmation on it.

As pp have said they won't know you've bought it yet if you haven't sent off the logbook. If you have sent off the logbook it should already be taxed in your name.
An expensive mistake.

When did uou buy it? That's fairly quick the way you've written it, it sounds like you bought it last night and it was taxed first thing this morning.

I'd guess ownership was transferred earlier than indicated and as such there has been enough time for them to get the clampers round to uou.

You will have to just pay it, it's a fair cop.

It is taxed!! And insured done it this morning before I drove the car.
I only have the green slip which was posted through my door last night. I am the legal owner of the car as of today, it is showing on the dvla system as taxed by me.

OK so when you bought the car you would have filled in new owner details on the log book. Did you do that yesterday?
