AIBU to think I need to report this? Or that I might lose job?

I've found out recently that a few people in my company do drugs.

Not at work, obviously, but they do it regularly outside of work. If they have done it outside of work, then I wouldn't know about it.

One of these people is a very very close friend, and it's no secret that we are good friends

Do I need to report? Drugs are strictly forbidden in our employee contracts. If it came to be known that I knew, and didn't say anything, I might get into trouble...

Part of me thinks that it's off work premises so it's none of my business

So to those who say I'm a bad friend

If the same friend had a personal trading account she hadn't declared- would you judge me for reporting that? Or would you encourage me?

OP posts:
WankingMonkey · 15/01/2017 23:16

I would say nothing. Unless they are pilots or something which I doubt.

I also would say nothing about this trading account scenario, though didn't read the other thread.

I tend to be of he opinion that if something has fuck all to do with me, I stay out of it. They may get caught, they may not. Neither affect me so meh..

PickledCauliflower · 15/01/2017 23:17

Well go ahead and report them then.
How will you prove it though? Do you have videos of them snorting coke?
It may well be your word against theirs - which will create terrible stress for you, as it probably then go nowhere.

Electrolens · 15/01/2017 23:20

But you don't even know what they've apparently been taking. I don't really see what you would report.

PrincessCarrieFisher · 15/01/2017 23:22

To be clear

As I've stated before, I don't actually want to report anyone

But when I mentioned the possible non declared trading account everyone jumped on me to report even though I had no evidence whatsoever and this person was a very good friend

OP posts:
DaviesMum · 15/01/2017 23:24

Leave it alone OP, nothing good can come of this - nothing.

PrincessCarrieFisher · 15/01/2017 23:26

Leave alone the drugs or the trading account or both?

OP posts:
Junebugjr · 15/01/2017 23:27

You really need to focus on something other than what your 'very good friends' are up to, and what you can grass them up for.

BillSykesDog · 15/01/2017 23:28

Yes, but the trading account could potentially lead to actions which could harm other people and their financial situations. Drugs probably won't unless they have a serious problem.

twattymctwatterson · 15/01/2017 23:28

You sound like you're trying to make a wee point here OP.

PickledCauliflower · 15/01/2017 23:28

I would leave both - unless you see anyone coming to serious harm I would leave it.

BillSykesDog · 15/01/2017 23:28

Yep. Totally agree twatty.

hoddtastic · 15/01/2017 23:29

i don't know what a non=declared trading account is.

I also must've misread you NOT wanting to report them- cos your post title says quite the opposite. What's up? Did they go on a big night out and not invite you?

PickledCauliflower · 15/01/2017 23:30

I did not view your other thread on the tradings account, but unless you see serious harm coming out of it, I wouldn't get involved.

PrincessCarrieFisher · 15/01/2017 23:46

It was the responses to the trading account question that led me to question this too.

Personally I think the situations are similar, and I don't understand why people asked me to report one and not the other

Ideally I want to mind my own business and not report anything

You don't even know what they are doing so how could you get in trouble for not telling - when you don't actually know anything. Poke your beak out.Nasty trouble making behaviour as by your own admission you know NOTHING for sure so this is malicious gossip. Horrible.

38cody · 15/01/2017 23:55

Can't wait to see what you want to snitch on next - perhaps you can uncover a work romance that's not allowed and snitch about that. So glad I don't work with you.

PrincessCarrieFisher · 15/01/2017 23:55

38cody- agreed

But then why was Everyone so encouraging to report the trading account? It's a similar case- very little knowledge, no evidence. Done outside work hours, nothing to do with me

Maybe because insider trading is a breach of trust.
Whereas using drugs at the weekend only harms yourself.

PickledCauliflower · 15/01/2017 23:59

I don't know why everyone was so encouraging on your other thread, but if you have no evidence anyway - it is best to leave alone.
You will be questioned on what evidence you have, and it will leave you terribly stressed.

ReasonsToBeModeratelyHappy · 16/01/2017 00:01

The list of jobs where it wouldn't be ok fascinates me - not ok for doctors to take drugs, but ok for nurses apparently (they aren't in the mumsnet list of jobs where it matters if you mess up). Seems to be fine for school teachers, they don't crop up. I guess its maybe ok for electricians, as they'll probably only hurt themselves, mostly?
And I guess if a teacher found out your DC of 17 was doing drugs (not in school), it wouldn't be any of their business, and you'd be happy for them to turn a blind eye, and not let you know...because its only illegal in name Hmm

DJBaggySmalls · 16/01/2017 00:03

OP asked should she report it at it will get her sacked if they are caught.
It wont.

But knowing about insider trading and not reporting it could get her sacked.
Thats the difference.

PickledCauliflower · 16/01/2017 00:07

It's about proof though isn't it?
There are jobs where drug taking and booze is an obvious hazard - Of course I would snitch if an airline pilot was zig zagging into his cockpit reeking of gin. I would also snitch if a nurse was doing the same - she is caring for people, administering medication etc.
But if a colleague takes drugs at weekends and then comes into work as normal on a Monday morning, where will reporting it get me?
Nothing will come of it, so best not to report it? No evidence - so just looks like I am shit stirring or listening to gossip?
