Another one of those shall I go to A&E threads...

DD who's 11 has had tummy ache since Monday eve. Thought it was period pains (she has horrible ones bless her) but she was sick Tues morning twice.
Thought it was a bug so kept her off 48 hrs etc. No diarrhoea or any other sickness.
Last night her pain increased, it's near belly button and radiates to right lower side Shock Abdomen tender upon pressure and she felt quite warm.
She's been off food for days which is not like her at all and not had a poo for 2 days.

So, rang 111 last night. Sent her and DH to OOH where GP palpates abdo, tests urine and does obs.

Diagnoses bowel pain and gives her Buscopan and says to give it 24/48 hrs to let it work.

She's still sore this morning and not at school.

Actually, reading what I've written, I've come to the decision that I am going to take her today. Very worried it's appendicitis.

Why wouldn't you take her back to the GP? If nothing else it will be a whole lot easier and quicker for you even if you turn up without an appointment. If you go to A&E when you've already seen a doctor who has diagnosed and treated her you'll end up sitting there for hours with what a doctor has already diagnosed as non urgent/serious bowel pain.

I'm not saying ignore her pain but go back to the GP IMO.

Take her back to the gp. They can refer you to a&e if they think it's necessary. Hope she feels better soon.

Definitely emergency appt with GP. If not satisfied, ask for second opinion. Mothers instinct is usually right.

Take her to A&E if you suspect appendicitis. The sooner the better. Not all patients present with typical symptoms. Not all have rebound tenderness. They will probably do a blood test to check for inflammation and infection as a starting point. Please do not leave it if you suspect appendicitis

They had my friends daughter pissing about for weeks with similar symptoms. They said a grumbling appendix. In the end, she was ambulanced in and did have it removed, it was about to blow and she was very lucky.

Ring the GP and get an emergency appointment.

I'd say gp - 'still sore' doesn't sound like an accident or emergency

Sore as in '8/10' pain. She's a tough one is DD. She's struggled on with pleurisy and horrendous periods so has a very high pain threshold.

What did the GP say about appendicitis last night? Surely it was mentioned?

If the GP had the slightest suspicion it may be appendicitis they would have referred her for blood tests so I doubt it is tbh.

Anyway, I agree with a pp - 'still sore' doesn't sound like A&E is necessary at all.

Keep trying gp as they can admit direct to surgical ward if necessary and you'll avoid hours of waiting in a and e. Our local one is full regardless of the day or time at the minute, so although probably not too busy in waiting room with new arrivals at 9am they may well struggle to get you into a cubicle to be seen. Go into gp if necessary.

Emergency GP appointment. Sounds like she needs a review and likely a referral to the paediatric team for assessment. Definitely not an A&E job during working hours.

Is she worse than last night? If not then id just do what the doc told you to do. If she's worse ring GP.

I had my appendix removed when I was 11. I remember being doubled over on the floor unable to move the pain was so bad. That morning my mom took me to the chemist, then the doctor then the hospital and I was operated on immediately. The pain kept moving across my abdomen rather than staying in one place. I also remember getting lots of pins and needles everywhere. Can you get her into the surgery to have another doctor check her out to see if their opinion is different?

I'd stop ringing & take her to the GP. Someone will see her and even if you have to wait, it'll be quicker than A&E. Then if she does need the hospital it'll be quicker with the referral.

Don't faff about on the telephone to the GP just take her there and speak to the receptionist. Someone will see her.

My DD (now 18) has always had period pain so bad she used to vomit.
Hope she feels better soon (DD now has Ibuprofen 600mg for the worst days - paracetamol never touched it)

I'd take her back to the GP

If you can't get a hold of GP on phone could you turn up? My GP is happy for people to do this, he's great though and actually stayed late one night to see my newborn as I was panicking about something that turned out to be nothing Blush

I've had my appendix out and thank god my dad took me to see GP as we were then rushed to hospital to get them out. Tell your GP you're specifically worried about her appendix.

I agree another check, but go to your GP first. If your A&E is anything like my local one, you might not get seen until the day after tomorrow.

A&E she needs a blood test to rule out infection and if you go via GP you won't get the results today. Time is of the essence with possible appendicitis.

Take her to a&e asap. Could easily be appendicitus. If it is she needs emergency treatment, you can't let it go on longer or it may rupture. My sister had this.

This is rubbish.

If a GP suspects appendicitis, they won't do a blood test themselves and then send the patient home Hmm. They refer straight to surgeons - you'd have the blood test done on the hospital ward the GP refers you to.

Really gets my back up when people spout off 'facts' that they're actually pulling out of their arse.
