DD who's 11 has had tummy ache since Monday eve. Thought it was period pains (she has horrible ones bless her) but she was sick Tues morning twice.
Thought it was a bug so kept her off 48 hrs etc. No diarrhoea or any other sickness.
Last night her pain increased, it's near belly button and radiates to right lower side Shock Abdomen tender upon pressure and she felt quite warm.
She's been off food for days which is not like her at all and not had a poo for 2 days.

So, rang 111 last night. Sent her and DH to OOH where GP palpates abdo, tests urine and does obs.

Diagnoses bowel pain and gives her Buscopan and says to give it 24/48 hrs to let it work.

She's still sore this morning and not at school.

Actually, reading what I've written, I've come to the decision that I am going to take her today. Very worried it's appendicitis.

Sounds like a good sensible GP . As others have said the referral system differs from trust to trust but I'd expect if your GP was concerned for him or her to refer DD to surgeons direct . (Or pead depending on age) then she'd be seen direct on surgical assessment rather than hanging around in ED waiting for a junior to asses her. Unless beds are full in which case surgical dr would beg for an ED cubicle to asses . It's the ED and medical space we are having horrendous issues with here at the moment. In appropriate referrals filling up beds such as elderly patients with advanced directives stating 'no hospital admissions ' overruled by care home staff or paramedic as an example ....grrr...sorry not the place for my winge. Hope DD feeling better soon and don't be afraid to use ED !!

Good news you were able to see the GP for re-assessment of ongoing tummy pain Now she can stay home with no Topsy fringe in sight! I do hope your DD is pain-free very soon.

Bit of an update.

DD's pain increased on Fri night and started puking on Sat morning. Got sent to A&E, no more sickness but concerns about her white blood count.
She had no fever but WBC of 27. Ultrasound was inconclusive but don't think it's appendix. Admitted to ward yesterday and still in now Sad.
Bloods retaken so just waiting for results. Poor girl, still in lots of pain.

Actually I'm fucking shitting it as I've made the mistake of googling her symptoms and leukemia keeps popping up.
I'm a fucking idiot.

Oh sweetheart. Please don't google. Hold our hands instead 💐

Pippa12 · 15/01/2017 22:04

This exact scenario happened with my nephew, he ended up having his appendix out and is fine now. No more googling, always worst case scenario and most often incorrect. Speedy recovery Flowers

Hope you daughter feels better and is able to come home soon. What a worry for you. Just a thought, when I was about 13, I was rushed in with bad pains, they thought appendix, but ruled it out. Pain would be horrendous and then not so bad for a good while, turned out it was a cyst on the ovary which had burst. Can't remember much of the time scale, but it took a while for the Dr's to discover what the pain was. Cross fingers all will be well soon

Rattusn · 15/01/2017 22:23

Op stay away from Google.

Thinking of you x

MichaelSheensNextDW · 15/01/2017 22:32

Google never helps at times like this. Leukemia would be extremely, extremely unlikely both statistically and with the presentation you've described. It probably is mesenteric adenitis - they may want to do a laparoscopy to have a look in case it is the appendix or an ovarian cyst issue. But I know we just want to exchange places with our children when they're going through something painful and scary Flowers

Google is not your friend in these situations.
Hope she's feeling better very soon.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 15/01/2017 22:40

Definitely stay away from google... it's terrifying and 99% of the time totally wrong!

Hope you get some good news Flowers

BravoPanda · 15/01/2017 22:44

OP I'm not sure what dosage kids her age can have but my Mum used to find me collapsed on the toilet with my period pains around 12/13. Turns out my body overproduces/is very sensitive to prostaglandins and even now the only way I can control it is by taking Ibuprofen the day before I'm due on and right through until day 4 of my period. Well I say that, I'm pregnant at the moment so not currently, but for the past 17 years anyway!

I hope she's ok and feels better soon Flowers

wifeyhun · 15/01/2017 22:47

Hope she is on the mend very soon, and stay away from google!
