About frozen mixed veg?

I have bought some for the first time, mainly because ds 17 months old likes peas and I thought he might like this too.

I'm 37 wks pregnant and cba to cook properly, so we've just had the frozen mixed veg with our chicken and potatoes. It feels a bit crap! Like it's not proper veg.

It was OK. Better then no veg I suppose.

Pretty sure my mother would be horrified though. Do others count it as proper veg?

I put frozen veg in soup.

Frozen onion is not the same as fresh.

LoupGarou · 13/01/2017 00:48

We virtually always have frozen veg, but its almost impossible and prohibitively expensive pretty hard to get fresh fruit and veg where we live though.

A bag of mixed veg with a diced fresh onion, a tin of lentils, some stock and herbs boiled up, then a smidge of cream added makes a delicious and easy soup, I vary the frozen veg to vary the soup flavour, sometimes add a tin of tomatoes etc.

Frozen veg is also great to chuck in risottos, cooks up really nicely as the risotto cooks. Yum! Grin

For some reason carrots never freeze right. Which is why frozen mixed veg - the little cubes - is always so horrible.

On a moment of frugality I bought frozen mushrooms to use in recipes.

I've tried twice now in Bolognese and stir fry.

They tasted like ripped up pieces of soggy cardboard. Confused

CheshireChat · 13/01/2017 09:39

I like frozen veg and use it a lot, but I don't like onions, garlic or ginger when frozen or in a jar etc I find they taste completely off.

I also don't like stir fry veg as with fresh veg you get more of a bite.

I do like frozen green beans, but lately the salad I make with them wasn't as nice so I'm not quite sure what's going on...

Frozen onions, peppers and mushrooms are great for chucking in dishes, no prep and we waste less food.

HardToDeal · 13/01/2017 09:46

I prefer tinned sweet corn to frozen, actually - seems juicer and DC like it.

GreenTureen · 13/01/2017 09:46

I've tried it once and never again - it's rank IMO (the frozen mixed bags that is).

I buy frozen peas and frozen sweetcorn but everything else is fresh.

I agree, tinned is a bit nicer than frozen with sweetcorn. It's just so much more expensive to buy tinned though IMO - the small tins are the right size for both dc but not particularly cheap. The big tins are too big so the rest ends up in a tub in the fridge and then 50% of the time ends up getting chucked.

I use the frozen steam packs (you get 4 per packs and find birdseye the best) they are good. Steam vegetables always taste better anyway. I do by fresh to but to be honest the frozen steam stuff is just as good

BarbaraofSeville · 13/01/2017 10:07

You could always freeze your leftover tinned sweetcorn Green. If you can get to an Aldi, their tinned sweetcorn is probably the only supermarket brand on a par with Green Giant.

Sparrowlegs248 · 13/01/2017 10:17

I prefer tinned sweetcorn too, I buy the 4 pack of small tins from Aldi. They are just the right size.

i quite like frozen veg. I buy the steam fresh bags and have a couple of those for my lunch with some grated cheese quite often

Branleuse · 13/01/2017 10:25

aldi tinned sweetcorn is nowhere near as nice as green giant. Its not got any salt or sugar in it. Its weird. Original green giant is the only one that tastes right

DailyFail1 · 13/01/2017 10:28

Love frozen mixed veg. Had a really poor childhood so am probably less picky than some people here, but a steaming big bowl with a bit of seasoning is the ultimate comfort food. I even defrost then put it in white sauce. My kids love it.

FreeButtonBee · 13/01/2017 10:28

Frozen mixed veg breaks the "mixed up food" rule which is the Law in my house but obviously totally arbitrary cos I don't mind the frozen mediterrean mixed veg bags from Waitrose.

Basically anything available in the 80s in NI is verboten - we didn't even have a tescos! it was Crazy Prices or Wellworths round our way. Frozen mixed veg high up there on the forbidden list but also irish stew, pigs liver Envy, luncheon meat, brown stew, mince and carrots, urgh, thank god for multiculturalist I say and all the yummy food it brought with it.

Goldenhandshake · 13/01/2017 10:33

I never like the mixed frozen veg, the packs of broccoli florets, sweetcorn, cauli florets etc are fine, but never those awful mixed ones of tiny diced carrots and anemic looking bits of broccoli. Frozen carrots are just a bad idea.

Coralfish · 13/01/2017 10:40

I don't like the mixed frozen veg (with the carrots and peas), but I really like the frozen stir fry veg, and frozen green beans, and frozen butternut squash, and frozen edemame beans. It is so much easier than buying fresh and having to use it before it goes off!!
