About frozen mixed veg?

Sparrowlegs248 · 12/01/2017 21:15

I have bought some for the first time, mainly because ds 17 months old likes peas and I thought he might like this too.

I'm 37 wks pregnant and cba to cook properly, so we've just had the frozen mixed veg with our chicken and potatoes. It feels a bit crap! Like it's not proper veg.

It was OK. Better then no veg I suppose.

Pretty sure my mother would be horrified though. Do others count it as proper veg?

I use the steam bags, they are more expensive but all my kids will eat them. 2 bags does veg on the side for 2 adults, 2 kids and baby.

EssentialHummus · 12/01/2017 21:52

I genuinely like frozen veg. Love the convenience, no qualms about the taste.

goodbeans · 12/01/2017 21:52

Nigella actually recommends using frozen spinach for some of her recipes.

LostMyDotBrain · 12/01/2017 21:52

Some is horrible but I always have the following:

Peas
Sweetcorn
Broccoli
Spinach
Microwave bags containing broccoli, peas, sweetcorn and spinach.

isthistoonosy · 12/01/2017 21:56

We eat it, ots that or home grown fresh round our way. We buy veg that looks like veg, defrost in a colander during the day then flash boil in a pan for a few mins. Its generally nice although I don't like frozen carrots. Yes we count it as real veg.

NickyEds · 12/01/2017 21:58

I like frozen okra, it's not as nice as fresh but still pretty good.

Waffles80 · 12/01/2017 22:00

Frozen spinach is v good for dishes where you need a lot - eggs/white fish florentine, spinach and ricotta cannelloni.

Sugarlightly · 12/01/2017 22:03

I think as a stand alone part of a meal frozen veg can ruin it a little, but using diced onions in chilli or Mediterranean veg in a pasta is good. I find stuff you would normally boil like broccoli and carrots tend to be the worst

PinkSwimGoggles · 12/01/2017 22:04

yabu.
frozen veg is fine and contains (usually) more nutrients than picked a week ago shipped around the world fresh stuff.
we use mostly peas and sweetcorn, cook in microwave for a short time.

CactusFred · 12/01/2017 22:06

I like it for curries and things with sauces but no so much on its own!

Areyoufree · 12/01/2017 22:11

I can't cope with mixed veg. Sweet corn - yes. Peas - yes. Mixed peas and sweet corn - wrong. Everything about it is wrong.

footballmum · 12/01/2017 22:13

Not keen on the mixed veg but we use frozen veg a lot. No peeling or chopping or waste. However I do think it depends how you cook it. Microwaving is ok but boiling turns it to mush. I now put all of ours in the steamer and they're perfect. They don't need quite as long as fresh veg though otherwise they'll go mushy

switswoo81 · 12/01/2017 22:17

I use the microwave ones for egg fried rice think it's grand.
Frozen vegetables all the way, Aldi frozen onions, mushrooms, peppers , casserole mix , I'm really lazy!

MrsderPunkt · 12/01/2017 22:18

I've just found frozen garlic and herbs, and bags of stir fry veg, and last year started to use the diced onion - it all feels so decadent - just open the pack and chuck it in - fast and no mess.

Sweetcorn, peas, green beans, and cut sliced leeks are good - tried carrots - never again - and I don't think frozen potato would ever taste good. Broccoli & cauli not good frozen either.

Notcontent · 12/01/2017 22:19

I think it all depends on what the veg is and what you are using it for!

Peas obviously freeze really well. Frozen spinach is great for most recipes, although I would use fresh spinach if serving it alone, rather than in a curry, etc.

PinkBunnyOnesieOnOrder · 12/01/2017 22:21

I don't mind separate frozen veg, but that mixed stuff is several kids of disgusting. I swear they inject it wth rubber & zap it to remove any flavour. It's vile.

HashiAsLarry · 12/01/2017 22:21

I use frozen veg all the time, better than wasting a load of fresh because it makes too large a portion. This thread has explained to me why I have massive frozen carrot angst though. The best I ever had was Tesco value juilienne but they've stop it now Sad

Andylion · 12/01/2017 22:22

I imagine mixed frozen veg is not as good as several bags of frozen single veg. I have brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and squash. I steam them in the microwave, adding them separately to the dish so that the veg that requires a longer cooking time gets it, and the other stuff is not mush.

I live alone and I find it's the best way to get a variety of veg without it going bad before I can finish it.

paxillin · 12/01/2017 22:23

Between job, school run, kids' hobbies, social life and bedtime there is a 20 minute window to cook. Frozen veg is my friend on weekdays.

Waterfeature · 12/01/2017 22:24

Frozen broccoli makes fab broccoli soup. My (v fussy) children love it.

PigletJohn · 12/01/2017 22:28

mixed spoils it. Some bits are always overdone and mushy.

If you cook (something else) until it is properly done, then do the peas, separately, for a couple of minutes, that's much better.

pictish · 12/01/2017 22:29

It doesn't taste of anything, that's my problem with it.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 12/01/2017 22:29

I use them.

You only cook them for a couple of minutes with a bit of olive oil and water and they are OK.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/01/2017 22:29

Wish they didn't put carrots in. I loathe them!

Sugarandsalt · 12/01/2017 22:30

Nutritionally it's equally good. Taste wise- I think peas and sprouts come out well. Frozen spinach is good in some curries- the strange texture seems to suit saag paneer for example.
