"Heartbreakingly pretty"

Watching ITN news right now. Tragic awful story about the death of a young girl. Teenager helping with enquiries I think. Anyhow the point at which I thought FFS was when a picture was shown of the young girl whose death was described as "all the more tragic" because she was "heartbreakingly pretty". It would be sad whatever , not because of how she looks. It's a terrible story but what a comment by the reporter?

Who do you think is more outraged by the comment than the murder?

Earlgreywithmilk · 11/01/2017 13:21

sadly you seem more outraged by that comment that the horrific murder - please don't be ridiculous.

That's what the op was on about youhadmeatcake! The inherant sexism /obsession with looks in our society! And that someone's looks should not be commented on in the reporting of a murder.
Of course everyone is outraged and disgusted about the murder.
This post didn't begin as a comment about the murder itself, there is another thread to post a comment about that if you should wish to. It's people like you, going into details and naming the victim who are trying to make it about the murder itself.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/01/2017 13:26

Be outraged at the murder and at the murderer of a little girl

One can be outraged at the crime AND the way in which it was reported.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 11/01/2017 13:43

No, you can only have one thought at a time, Dame. Every time you worry about sexism, you're sticking two fingers up to War. When you worry about Trump, you're insulting the memories of every dead person ever. When you worry about racism, you're saying you don't give a fuck about climate change. When you're annoyed with your partner, you're basically saying you don't give a shit about the homeless.

Them's the rules.

Or maybe there's some connection between inability to think about more than one thing in one day, and .... inability to think about anything.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/01/2017 13:46

Maybe we should just all stop thinking...

"Sadly you seen more outraged by that comment than by the horrific murder of Katie"

Now that is a properly offensive thing to say.

Incidentally, I find the familiar use of the first names only of people of whatever age who have been murdered pretty offensive too. As if people are claiming some knowledge-almost ownership-of them.

Earlgreywithmilk · 11/01/2017 14:14

completely agree bertrand

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 11/01/2017 14:15

Well, you let us all know when it's a good time for this, why don't you? Because I think immediately a comment like this is exactly the right time.

And beyond thinking that this is a terrible thing to have happened, and hoping that the family find some comfort at some time in the future, and being unable to contemplate the pain that they must be going through, I don't see what else anyone can say that would be appropriate, actually.

Mawkish comments about how I don't live far away, I can't stop thinking about that little girl, I hugged my daughters extra tight, the pain must be awful, what do you think happened, just imagine, a 15 year old has been arrested .... are, in my opinion, if anything more distasteful from people who know nothing about the people involved.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/01/2017 14:15

Some however think using a reporters misguided use of 'pretty' on a report about a murderered child to launch a discussion about 'objectifying' is rather inappropriate

Oh did you say it was inappropriate?Must've missed that!Grin

Purplebluebird · 11/01/2017 14:18

That's a ridiculous comment, and quite frankly disgusting :s That poor child, it's tragic regardless of her looks.

TheStoic · 11/01/2017 14:20

Oh that explains it. You didn't actually fully understand the OP.

I don't mind that. In my opinion, calling them by their name humanises them.

amispartacus · 11/01/2017 14:33

Mawkish comments about how I don't live far away

I don't know if that was aimed at me -but I made that comment. It is my local primary school. The children on my street go there. It happened a mile from my house. My heart goes out to the family and everyone who knew her - the children who knew her are my neighbours.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 11/01/2017 14:36

No, Spartacus it wasn't, and I didn't know that. I mean generally after this kind of awful event, when some people seem to scramble for any dim connection, really.

YouHadMeAtCake · 11/01/2017 15:53

Oh stop it. Of course anyone can think of more than one thing at a time. Some however think using a reporters misguided use of 'pretty' on a report about a murderered child to launch a discussion about 'objectifying' is rather inappropriate. Still, carry on with your childish 'underthinking' comments

Exactly itsmine

Right, so we make a note and then count 14 days to comment because after all, nobody will still find the story upsetting after a fortnight?

Now that's offensive!

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 11/01/2017 16:25

It is because the news is indeed tragic and heartbreaking that we think it's offensive to suggest that an exacerbating factor for this is the little girls looks.

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2017 16:46

"Some however think using a reporters misguided use of 'pretty' on a report about a murderered child to launch a discussion about 'objectifying' is rather inappropriate."
But the use of the word "pretty" is not the issue.
