Phrases you really hate on MN

cathf · 07/01/2017 14:17

Following on from the fabulous type of threads you really hate on here, I thought I would start a similar thread for phrases used on MN that really get your goat.
I'll start off with 'in this house', usually used in conjunction with some smug statement to make the OP feel inadequate/bad.
For example 'Oh, we love books in this house!' or 'there's no faddy eaters allowed in this house' or 'we all have to respect each other in this house'.
Over to you ....

OP posts:

If you artificially inseminate a cow with bacon do you get some wonderful beef / pork hybrid? Great for a lasagne I'd think. Or bee-con rashers?

SilentBob · 08/01/2017 11:48

I've said it before but it bears repeating...I hate 'think' used on here sometimes so much I have actually stopped reading a thread more than once when I have come across it. It is entirely irrational on my part but I can't help it!

An example:

I have a hobby, I do it weekly on a Saturday morning (think me and 10 other people, a large field, a ball, some goal posts...) WHY NOT JUST SAY 'I PLAY FOOTBALL'?

Thankfully it's not too prevalent or else I would have no choice but to flounce Smile

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 08/01/2017 11:52

I have read the whole thread but I am not going to re-read it, so apologies if this one has been mentioned before, but "gives me rage" is very irritating.

MrsExpo · 08/01/2017 11:58

The use of "entitled" as an adjective. As in "I've never met anyone so entitled", used in the same way you might say "I've never met anyone so tall/angry/skinny ..."

Lweji · 08/01/2017 12:01

Or bee-con rashers?

It sound delish. Wink

But that would confuse the tapeworms. Some might even become trans-woms. And the endless discussions about the hybrids being a pork or a beef worm space. And any worm feeling excluded accusing the others of wormism.
Will nobody think of the worms?!

derxa · 08/01/2017 12:03

hobby is another one. These people with hobbies are terrified of being 'outed'.

MrsJayy · 08/01/2017 12:07

Urgh Hobby why cant they just say cycling/,golfing /free running Grin always the hobby really rips knitting

MrsJayy · 08/01/2017 12:09

I meant to say tree hugging meh my not so funny joke was ruined

BoneyBackJefferson · 08/01/2017 12:11

An thread title or post that refers to violence.

"I going to slap my DH"

"X Needs a good slapping" etc.

and those that join the thread to say that it was "just a joke" or a "turn of phrase"

BoneyBackJefferson · 08/01/2017 12:14

LassWiTheDelicateAir

Definitely a two for one.

adding to my short list, any phrasing that is designed to shut the other person up.

and then those that get annoyed because you point out what they are doing.

FizzBombBathTime · 08/01/2017 12:38

i get annoyed when a long time poster starts a thread with " Come hither my friends and let's talk about the days of yore on MN"

This. what does an op of a thread like this hope to achieve? It's so cringy.

latedecember1963 · 08/01/2017 12:41

Playdate.

gonetoflower · 08/01/2017 12:55

"Ho hum" drives me absolutely crackers. It's always used in such a passive aggressive manner when the OP doesn't like the fact people haven't agreed e.g:

OP: We go to my Mum's house at Xmas but DH wants to go to his Dad's instead. AIBU to think we should go to Mum's again?

Everyone: Yes.

OP: "Well, I was always though that the mother/ daughter relationship was important but obviously I'm wrong. Ho hum.

Grr...

Rachel0Greep · 08/01/2017 13:35

hobby is another one. These people with hobbies are terrified of being 'outed'.

True! Mind you I got a very sharp retort on a thread, possibly similar to this one, when I said it amuses me when someone posts a mundane detail, that probably applies to thousands of posters, and adds 'this might out me'.

Rachel0Greep · 08/01/2017 13:39

Posters who like to point out to the OP that their DM/MIL is providing free childcare:

"My MIL has my son 2 days of the week for which I'm grateful for. Yesterday though she shot me in the foot for no reason. Aibu to be annoyed?"

"You do realise that she's saving you £1million a year on childcare don't you hmm?

Yes! Wrap up your foot and get on with things. Grin

derxa · 08/01/2017 13:56

Yes! Wrap up your foot and get on with things Grin Yes it's only a wee scratch.

pinkandpurplesparkle · 08/01/2017 14:06

Still - as in "but s/he's so little still" - irks me as I find it patronising ... like as if the person doesn't know.

Pretty please. Yuck.
My little family. Irritating.

pinkandpurplesparkle · 08/01/2017 14:07

...and the hobby thing ... "I do my hobby from 8 to 10 on a Wednesday" ... why not just say (if it's relevant) what it is - or "I'm not at home for a couple of hours on a Wed evening"

SadTrombone · 08/01/2017 14:11

A bit random and not one I hate as such but... for ages I thought HTH meant "hang thy head" (as in, "in shame")!

No idea where the hell I got that from!! BlushGrin

Philoslothy · 08/01/2017 14:11

The sneery phrases get me, I don't think I have ever seen them used in a pleasant way. They are used just to make others feel shit

"Head tilt"
Hmm
"Special snowflake"

Fairenuff · 08/01/2017 14:20

SadTrombone Grin

There is nothing on mn that annoys me/bothers me/gives me rage/boils my piss/etc.

But there are a lot of tired cliches (pissing on chips for example) so we could definitely do with some new ones.

The only thing I don't like is reverse threads. It's as bad as trolling imo because the OP is giving a load of false information.

But then we never know which threads are real and which are fiction anyway.

LucklessMonster · 08/01/2017 14:23

Dx for diagnosis. Not MN specific but this is the only place I see it outside of a medical setting.

derxa · 08/01/2017 14:25

hang thy head" (as in, "in shame")! How quaint Grin It's probably quite accurate though.

BertrandRussell · 08/01/2017 14:26

I don't like medical jargon- dx, bloods, paed and so on. Makes me think people are trying to sound as if they know more than they do.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/01/2017 14:34

Ooh everything is -refuser - bottle refuser, nap refused etc e.g.
