A bit of background - I like sewing, knitting, etc and in recent years I've really got into quilting.

I had a load of unfinished projects floating about, so about 18 months ago I started finishing them off and sold them on Etsy, over time I've made them for friends as gifts, for friends of friends, etc and have now sold quite a few and I have a few orders on the go at the moment

I also have a full time job, kids, dog, normal family stuff

Anyway, to cut a long story short, a friend has asked me to make a quilt as a present for her mum. She texted a few days ago to ask me if I'd do her a favour and make a "little something" and she'd "provide all the material" for her mums birthday at the end of the month, I replied that it depended on what the 'little something' was as I was pretty busy at the moment. She asked if she could come over and show me.

Turns out that she wants me to make a pretty complicated double bed size quilt, from shirts that belonged to her late father. It's lovely, but there's nothing 'little' about it.

I apologised and explained that I just didn't have time, I had work and some paid for orders that had to take priority. I said she could leave it with me and I'd do it over the next few weeks, suggested some simpler designs, a smaller quilt or cushion covers maybe, but she wanted to stick with her original idea, so I had to say, sorry but no can do.

She got really huffy and passive aggressive and has been bad mouthing me to a couple of mutual friends.

I'm really pissed off with her, I'd really like to cut down my hours at work and sell more of my stuff so I feel that it have to prioritise prior, paying orders over favours.

I'm happy to make her the quilt, but it will be as and when and will go to the back of the queue whenever I get a paid for order

Pop - that blanket is gorgeous! One day I will learn to crochet, I have a total brain fart about it. I just can't do it.

MizzEmma I was looking at some Amish quilts on a blog the other day, they are absolutely gorgeous, and completely hand sewn

It's sad that there's so many of these cheeky feckers about

Blinky I don't think it's sad at all- this thread has kept me entertained and smiling throughout a totally shit day! I hope they never develop a cure for cheekyfuckeritis! Grin

Haven't read the full thread but remember reading in a quilting magazine that the quilt shown took 2000 hours to make as hand pieced and hand quilted. Just the fact OP's friend wanted her quilt made out of fiddly shirt pieces, done in a small amount of time while expecting OP to pay for the extra material, batting, binding, just shows she has no concept of what is involved, expense or the time required.

This is a friend you can do without, especially as she is now bad mouthing you because she did not get her way!

The second text is worse! It's basically saying that you enjoy your 'hobby' (I'm surprised she didn't say 'little hobby') so much that she thought you'd be willing to make her something complicated for free Hmm The Matalan quilts would be mass produced in a factory in China and she would know that. I'd be quite tempted to reply

"Since my hobby which I do enjoy has blossomed into a viable side business for me on Etsy, I don't have the time or desire to do complicated requests for friends for free. Perhaps you could take your materials to a seamstress? Sorry"

mimishimmi · 07/01/2017 21:49

Also, I've found with fiddly pieces, it takes almost as long to sew them with a machine as by hand because you still have to align all pieces up, baste etc. So the top of the quilt for a double bed size would take a couple of months doing a couple of hours each night. Wow, she's not your friend.

People who don't 'do' handmade, don't 'get' handmade......
They don't understand the time, effort and work, as well as cost of materials, that go into a handmade item. They think it's just a little hobby, or something that you do to keep you busy, and don't realise how much work goes into it.

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 07/01/2017 22:00

hookiewookie I totally agree- but the OP then broke the cost down so she could see why it would be that price.

People who don't, for example, crochet (feel like I've been banging on about crochet all day, sorry 😁) may compare a handmade blanket to the price of a commercially-made blanket, and be shocked at the difference in price. But surely, once the costs gave been explained, any reasonable person would have a better understanding, and either refuse or agree to pay the extra?

And PLEASE tell me that's a crochet -related NN...??Smile

KoalaDownUnder · 08/01/2017 04:51

People are insane.

That 'Sophie's Universe' quilt that someone posted is stunning. You don't need to be able to crochet to see that it would take a huge amount of work. Why on earth would you not expect to pay a fortune for it?! Shock

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 08/01/2017 06:05

OP, I am so insanely jealous of your talent!! I would pay $$$$ for someone to make me bespoke quilts for my 4 sons to then hand down etc. Why anyone would think that you could do one for free and then have the bloody cheek to bad mouth you leaves me speechless, especially someone who is supposed to be a friend.

As a side note dolly and startled, I live in aus, and dirty is slang for angry so I didn't bat an eyelid!! Haha

Aeroflotgirl · 08/01/2017 08:38

What these people think that someone sits down and handsews blankets for Matalan on the scale that they want😬😬😬. It does not tAke an expert to realise that that blankets in Matalan, BM, Asda, John Lewis are mass produced and are not bespoke! They are produced in a factory, and Simone us not sitting down lovingly sewing them for hours!

Aeroflotgirl · 08/01/2017 08:38

Someone doh not simone😁😁😁
