To have been shamed at the gym

I am a plus size lady who has made it her New Years resolution to lose weight. I joined a gym in December and mainly use the pool. I suffer from knee pain so I have to use the pool for my exercise I can't do running or bike.

So I do little bit of swim-hops/walking which helps my knee and also helps me lose weight. When I arrived I went into the fast lane as it was completely empty and was the smallest lane. It suddenly got really busy and that made other lanes quite busy.

Then two men moved into my lane. They started a fast swim. I asked them could they wait another 15 mins for me to finish and that I have a knee problem so this is helps me.

They replied that "that's not our problem and that the pool was for those who do real exercise". I replied it is real exercise and then I heard one of the men mutter "it's not the lard lane" and I left straight away.

Aibu to think that these men are complete cunts.

Can we all get new careers starting threads and flogging the results to the Fail? I could do with a few quid.

Did they mention pool wankers or insecure triathlons?

PurpleDaisies · 06/01/2017 14:15

tywin have you looked into prescription goggles? I'm also very short sighted and mine were life changing.

Tywinlannister · 06/01/2017 14:17

Purpledaisies, I tried a friends on holiday and they were fantastic, I agree. She had big scuba style ones though.

I will look in to it again I think, I have always meant to treat myself!

Ahem. I think you mean "pool wankers (copyright purpledaisies)". I was actually mildly disappointed it didn't warrant a mention. I've never made such an important typo contribution to a thread before.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/01/2017 14:20

It certainly was a typo contribution for the ages Grin

PurpleDaisies · 06/01/2017 14:21

tywin Is it distance or astigmatism? I got mine from specsavers for £25. They look like normal goggles. They don't correct the astigmatism but they mean I can read the clock, find my locker, walk into the right changing room, have a converse with someone and recognise if I know them and that feeling of total vulnerability is gone. I was amazed they weren't more expensive. You probably can get ones that do the astigmatism aspect too but I expect they're more expensive.

PurpleDaisies · 06/01/2017 14:22

Thank you MrsTerryPratchett.

Tywinlannister · 06/01/2017 14:32

Both but the astigmatism is mild so I can put up with for the hour I'd be in the pool! That's really reasonable actually. I can't see my hand in front of my face without specs!

I sometimes wonder how ppl justify double parking on a tight street during busy hours. Now I know! They are just like you OP -- oh surely it's not too much to ask of ppl to give up 15 minutes of their day just for ME ME ME.

I don't think weightloss is mainly diet at all.

I am very active but eat complete and utter crap. I am very thin. I think if I didn't exercise I would be enormous.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/01/2017 16:30

It might work for you heron but most research and anecdata says otherwise.

If people are eating large amounts of crap, it takes vast amounts of exercise to burn off. IME a lot of people eat shit and stay thin but aren't eating massive amounts of it. A bacon Whooper with cheese is 760, plus fires and a large, sugary drink... you'd have to jog for what, an hour and a half for one meal?
