To buy stuff on a 70% chance our baby is a girl!?

Had scan this morning (12+5). Sonographer asked if we'd like to know gender of the baby and that it looked as though baby was a girl. She seemed preeeeety certain. I've attached a couple of the photos but I don't understand the nub theory or what bit your supposed to look at so they mean nothing to me in that respect!

Saw midwife straight after and she seemed surprised sonographer would have said anything at all at such an early scan & that it was only a 70% chance she completely pissed on my chips.

Everything in my being wants to be sensible and wait to buy anything but it wouldn't be unreasonable to buy one pretty sleepsuit would it...?! Blush

Personally I wouldn't buy anything till at least the 3rd trimester, but that's just me...the pram was delivered when LO was 4 days old- I had friends/acquaintances who nearly had a fit when I told them at 36 weeks that we didn't have a pram.

You could buy stuff now, but based on what is an educated guess from the sonographer, I wouldn't put money on it.

I wouldn't buy the pink unicorn baby gro for any baby as it's bloody awful. I like pink but not that sickly shade and not with glittery unicorns.

I would not have the slightest problem putting these on a baby boy. It is over 26 years ago but one of my favourite outfits for my son was a Laura Ashley flowered navy corduroy romper suit.

nolongersurprised · 06/01/2017 01:46

My DS has 3 older sisters, he has worn a variety of coloured babygros, including outgrown "girl" stuff. His penis has remained unaffected by wearing pink on occasion and no one who knew us or encountered us seemed to care or be phased.

I love the pink unicorn sleepsuit, it's so cute

Why do so many on here have a problem with pink things for girls?

It's fine to be "girly" and like pretty pink clothes and toys and whatever

Just as it's fine to not want to dress your daughter in pink or buy her pink things

Now this is just me but I love all the gorgeous pink newborn and baby clothes

If someone I knew had a baby girl and they hated all that then I'd abide by their wishes and not buy any of that (whilst looking longingly at the pink things)

To be clear, I don't at all. I just didn't like that particular pink unicorn suit.

I do think the anti- pink propaganda gets a bit overwrought.

AnnPerkins · 06/01/2017 15:30

Everyone's being U. All newborns should wear white, fluffy towelling sleepsuits.

What a palaver, eh, OP. Mumsnet is really the wrong place to ask this question.
It's entirely up to you, but if you do buy a 'pretty pink' girly outfit you're really just treating yourself. Your baby won't care what colour they're wearing and it won't affect their immediate well being. But if it makes you happy then go for it.
I've had 3 babies and I only knew the sex of the middle one. Even so I still just bought white things. We were lucky enough to be given some nice little outfits each birth in the 'appropiate colours'. My 3rd baby was a girl after 2 boys and I must admit I did take a certain pleasure in seeing her dressed in 'girl clothes' though I wasn't able to go mad with it.
If I was having a baby now I'd definitely buy gender neutral - nice bright colours like orange, yellow, lime green, etc and everything would be saved for the next baby, irregardless of sex.
Hope your pregnancy and birth goes well, OP Flowers

zukiecat no problem with pink clothes for girls (or blue for boys) here either, but it's only one colour out of lots of other beautiful ones. I think it would be a bit of a shame to be limited to just one colour.
I understand that pink/blue is a kind of code for girl/boy but I don't think it really matters at the baby stage.

zukiecat · 06/01/2017 16:02

noel

You're right, it doesn't really matter at all, I loved dressing my DDs in pink, I also love aqua colours so they both wore a mixture of pinks, aquas, whites and creams as babies

I don't like bold colours on babies but I totally get that that's just me!

reallyanotherone · 06/01/2017 16:04

I don't mind pink.

But after dd was born i was innudated with gifts.

Everthing, without exception, was pink. Hats, clothes, shoes, bibs, coats, blankets. Every. Fucking. Thing.

I took nearly all of it back except for one or two things i particularly liked. As pp said, there are so many lovely colours, why am i restricted to one.

Pink isn't the problem. It's the fact that girls like only pink. And all girls like pink. And that pink is seen as pretty and girly and it makes it about appearance from day 1, if not before.

Like i said upthread, my baby/child is treated very differently depending on what she's wearing.

noeffingidea · 06/01/2017 16:12

JustAnother I'm sorry but I disagree with your 90%. I think girls who are really into the 'girly stuff' are in the minority really. Of course most children want to fit in with their peers but I believe the majority of girls would be natural 'tomboys' if left to their own devices.
