To buy stuff on a 70% chance our baby is a girl!?

Had scan this morning (12+5). Sonographer asked if we'd like to know gender of the baby and that it looked as though baby was a girl. She seemed preeeeety certain. I've attached a couple of the photos but I don't understand the nub theory or what bit your supposed to look at so they mean nothing to me in that respect!

Saw midwife straight after and she seemed surprised sonographer would have said anything at all at such an early scan & that it was only a 70% chance she completely pissed on my chips.

Everything in my being wants to be sensible and wait to buy anything but it wouldn't be unreasonable to buy one pretty sleepsuit would it...?! Blush

Genuinely, if you had a baby boy and someone bought you that sleepsuit as a gift would you not find it a little strange?

I sometimes don't think I belong on MN.

I am sorry. But how exactly is a newborn girls clothing different from a boy's? I mean at that stage the only thing distinguishing them are their genitals but I'm not aware that sleepsuits and vests are different on that count?

NapQueen · 03/01/2017 17:53

I wouldn't choose it above other sleepsuit but that's because I hate that shade of pink. If I was given it I'd shove it on the baby regardless because they get covered in vomiting and shit anyways

thesleepystorm · 03/01/2017 17:53

Yes criss cross I would, because society has conditioned me to see that as a "girl's" outfit. Literally no other reason.

Unefille · 03/01/2017 17:54

Oh right.

Of course.

3 week old penis owner sleeps and shits in a pink sleepsuit ---> he catches the gays.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/01/2017 17:57

i wouldnt put a boy in a girly pink unicorn sleepsuit

12w they cant tell, sometimes they can at 16w esp if have 4d scan, but generally wait till 20w to confirm

or take the harmoney test at £400ish pounds if you want 100% sex

Artandco · 03/01/2017 17:58

I wouldn't buy it, but if I already owned it or it was gifted I would use (although that pink unicorn one linked isn't my style at all regardless of gender)

thesleepystorm · 03/01/2017 17:59

Yes but blondes do you not see - why is it -"girly". It's "girly" because society has dictated it as such.

FarAwayHills · 03/01/2017 18:00

It's still early days and knowing a few instances where these scans have been incorrect, I wouldn't go all out pink even if it's the same result at your next scan. Just bear the mind that they are not entirely accurate. I've seen some friends really struggle post birth having had a fixed idea of the baby boy or girl they thought they would have turn out to be the opposite. If you are deciding on decor maybe keep things like the walls neutralish and add pink accessories that could easily be changed in future.

Artandco · 03/01/2017 18:02

THis is why we never found out or told anyone in advance also, as if we said boy or girl people would have bought all blue or pink.

We have two boys. They never wore baby blue babygrows. Both all white babygrows with various colour cardigans and booties until walking. I don't like 'blue' boys or pink girls toys either. Why not just red or yellow or natural or similar

Soubriquet · 03/01/2017 18:03

No I wouldn't put a boy in that

Yes clothes are clothes and all that blah blah but no one I know would put their son in a baby pink girls sleepsuit.

Now a little boy in a dress for fancy dress up or wanting to play in sparking shoes yes. Every day dresses and sparkling shoes no

GreenTureen · 03/01/2017 18:05

I'm amazed that you were given any indication at a 12 week NHS scan.

I had my first scan with this one (now 21 weeks so we know it's a ds3!) a bit late and I was 14 + 1 so we asked at the end if they could give us an indication of sex...they were very adamant that it was little better than a guess even at 14 weeks so they would never attempt it.

Personally op I wouldn't buy anything at 12 weeks anyway, regardless of sex.

Regarding the sleepsuit, you're right op and 99% of real life people would never buy that for a boy. But you won't get that on mn, it's incredibly cool and forward thinking to be gender neutral so you'll mainly get the people commenting who insist they would put it on a boy.

Soubriquet · 03/01/2017 18:09

And if anyone starts going on about gender contstruct in society and all that, if you are so happy to put a boy in a baby pink unicorn sleepsuit, why on earth was there such an uproar over a poster wanting to call her Dd Iris James

smellyboot · 03/01/2017 18:11

Nor would I use the pink sleep suit for a baby boy normally unless it was a hand me down from his older sister which I did do at night. Only because I didnt want him to be refered to as a girl as hes a boy with a name. I personally hate that colour on young babies and prefer bold colours or white!

thesleepystorm · 03/01/2017 18:12

why on earth was there such an uproar over a poster wanting to call her Dd Iris James

Totally nonsensical argument - didn't even see that thread.

I couldn't care less what people call their kids.

Soubriquet · 03/01/2017 18:14

It was mad sleepy

Pages and pages on how she can't call her Iris James because it's a boys name, with the occasional "there's no such thing as boys names and girls names" thrown in. Then it started all up again

BitchQueen90 · 03/01/2017 18:15

Someone I know was told she was having a girl at the 20 week scan. She went for a 3D scan a few weeks later. It was a boy. At 12 weeks I wouldn't even think of buying gender specific stuff.

Although, my DS was constantly being mistaken for a girl no matter what clothes he was wearing so I guess it doesn't matter 😁

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/01/2017 18:41

it just doesnt seem right, same as i wouldnt put a baby girl in a very blue suit with cars all over it

tho either could wear a unicorn/car suit in yellow Grin

but

i would, (and do as a nanny) get girls to play with garages and cars etc and boys dolls and push buggies - if they want to

Nickname1980 · 03/01/2017 18:45

I have a story much like others here.. My little one's nub theory at 12 weeks said girl. The sonographer was certain and quite smugly certain, too!

I have a little boy Wink. The nub theory isn't accurate enough. I get your excitement to get one little thing though! You could always gift it, like pps said, if you do have a boy!

Bananabread123 · 03/01/2017 18:47

Had 20 week sexing scan for our second.... got it wrong and we had a boy not a girl!

Soubriquet · 03/01/2017 18:49

Oh yes toys are different

Dd loves playing with cars and Ds loves pushing around the babies buggies

HelenaGWells · 03/01/2017 18:51

I've never known anyone get told a gender at a 12 week scan. I thought that it was virtually impossible to tell before 16 weeks? A private gender scan would normally be at 18-20 weeks.

If you want to buy one thing it's your prerogative but I would buy something unisex.

reallyanotherone · 03/01/2017 19:10

These things do matter. Maybe they seem trivial but they do matter. They're part of something much bigger.

This.

I have a 7 yo with short hair. Dressed in jeans and a jumper she gets treated very, very differently to when she wears a dress if they get past the concept it's a girl with short hair and not a boy in a dress.

It's scary. People say it's trivial and makes no difference but it does.

BikeRunSki · 03/01/2017 19:10

DD was "probably a boy" at 20 weeks!

I'd also be too superticious to buy anything until 30 weeks or more, and even then it would likely be Scandi patterns and primary colours.

Leelaseye · 03/01/2017 19:28

My "75% sure it's a girl" at 12wks had a very definite willy by 20wks. Grin

The sonographer at 20wks was surprised that the one at 12wks (which were routinely done at a different hospital) seemed intent on offering their best guesses.
