To think I got 'spiked'

I did what you're not supposed to do.

I picked up an abandoned glass of fizz, and I drank it as I'm flat broke after Christmas, had a Diet Coke at the pub but wanted a fizz and couldn't afford to buy my own Xmas Blush it was just sitting there at the bar. Already had a few glasses of wine at home with a meal then popped into our local to see some friends at about 11:30. DP had to carry me home, (his poor back!) I can't remember a thing and apparently was pretty much unconscious and when I did wake up a bit, totally incoherent- I couldn't form any words. He said he had to move all my limbs like a puppet to get me on my side in bed then didn't want to leave me alone so just played on iPad most of the night.

I feel appalling now. Shaky and sick and a racing heart and I've drank loads of water but can't seem to wee Xmas Blush

It was the local bit-up-it's-Arse-gastro-pub and I know 'mine-sweeping' a drink is a bit student and scummy and I shouldn't have done it, but I'm starting to think it must have been laced with something and whoever it was bought for thought better of it and left it alone. Total memory blackout from about half an hour after I drank it, and before that I was ever so slightly tipsy but holding a conversation and dancing. Only wanted to stick my head in to see in the New Year.

I'm so stupid aren't I Xmas Blush Xmas Blush

I would ring 111 it's possible to drink too much water.

Bette85 · 01/01/2017 12:59

Definitely sounds like the drink was spiked. Even if extra alcohol had been added, it wouldn't have such an extreme effect. The NHS website recommends reporting it to the police and seeking medical advice if necessary:

www.nhs.uk/Livewell/abuse/Pages/drink-spiking.aspx#whattodo

Even if you feel embarrassed about reporting it, it may be that some guy was trying to drug and rape a lone woman at the bar (you were just fortunate to have your partner to look after you) - and, if so, he'll almost certainly try it again if he's not caught.

ludothedog · 01/01/2017 13:00

Magic is similar to MDMA but not exactly the same

www.talktofrank.com/drug/mephedrone#aka=M-Cat

It's really not a pleasant drug, especially if used frequently.

angeldelightedme · 01/01/2017 13:01

were you taking any medication?

MountainPeaks · 01/01/2017 13:03

Lorelei76 Because when it comes to drinking someone else's drinking vs. spiking someone's drinking, one is a lot more serious both for the public but for the bar itself. It may not be a one off occasion that a drink has been spiked in that bar - they may already be aware that there is drink spiking occurring and may already be working with the police.

AuroraBora · 01/01/2017 13:04

No idea about the spiking as I fortunately have no experience of it, but as PPs have said, not being able to wee is concerning.

If there's something medically wrong rather than just dehydration then I suspect you could do damage to yourself if you just keep drinking.

Does your bladder feel full if you push on it?

After I had general anaesthetic a few years ago i lost the ability to tell when I needed to pee, the urge just didn't come. It's apparently a common side effect but can be serious. That is why they will not discharge you until you pee. Eventually I did, but they did do a ultrasound of my bladder to check it was filling and also threatened me with a cannula (do I mean cannula?).

If you are drinking a pint of water quickly, it would go through you fairly quickly too I'd imagine.

hefzi · 01/01/2017 13:05

Mountain they're also all symptoms of a hangover Hmm

The article I referred to was in the BJC - can't link from my phone, unfortunately. The original research was done in 2009, and there's also a Telegraph article on it from the same year, but a similar survey last year replicated the findings.

Even in definite spiking cases, evidence globally shows alcohol is far and away the most common thing used.

I'm not unsympathetic - I had a drink spiked in 2000, and went straight to A and E on waking up (which -luckily - was within the window possible for testing for Rohypnol): I was fairly sure who had done it, but the CPS decided not to prosecute as they felt it was unlikely to result in a conviction.

PooFlower · 01/01/2017 13:05

OP Stop drinking water it is very dangerous and can damage your kidneys to drink so much. You should be slowly sipping not gulping pints of it.
Lead Betts died after drinking water like that after taking ecstacy.
Please seek medical advice I am very concerned about the amount of water you have just drank and you being unable to pee.
Do you feel like you need to pee but can't as this is common after taking MDMA. You could try a warm bath if this is the case to help your bladder release.

MountainPeaks · 01/01/2017 13:06

catheter? Cannula's go into veins, catheters go into urethras.

They could have threatened you with either as they give fluids via cannulas.

crashdoll · 01/01/2017 13:06

I agree that you shouldn't keep drinking if there's an issue with your bladder. You do need to be seen.

However, good tip for helping wee is to sit on the toilet and pour warm water over your lady parts.

AuroraBora · 01/01/2017 13:07

I do mean catheter, thanks mountain!

MountainPeaks · 01/01/2017 13:08

"The original research was done in 2009," We are now in 2017. Drink spiking has risen.

And yes, they are symptoms of a hangover (and dehydration, and serious infection). The thing is the symptoms can stack up to many things, not as you said "nothing that makes me think spiked". If you think that you don't fully understand the symptoms of spiking the next day.

MadHattersWineParty · 01/01/2017 13:10

I don't have a bath just a crappy stand-up shower but I'll that in a minute crashsdoll, thanks.

I think I do need a wee as I can feel it when I press on my bladder but no urge to go at all.

Not on any medication currently no.

AuroraBora · 01/01/2017 13:16

The way I made myself pee was to sit on the loo, relax as much as I could, run the tap, and then repeatedly press on my bladder. Eventually my brain recognised the "need a pee" feeling and I had the tiniest wee ever considering the amount I'd drunk and how full my bladder was.

I would seriously consider medical help though if you can't make it happen.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 01/01/2017 13:17

Ok I think you should seek some sort of medical advice as even with my worst hangover I haven't struggled to pass urine. Stop just glugging water.

toptoe · 01/01/2017 13:24

Drink spiking is more common than we realise. I know a few people who have been spiked as they only drank a little then were totally out of it in a comatose state. Myself included though it never occurred to me that was what had happened at the time as it was years ago. You do know when it's not normal overindulgence. Especially when you haven't over indulged or aren't ill.

God knows who does it. Spikers can range from randomers who want to rob or assault people, to people you know wanting to make you have a good time by popping a pill or extra booze into your drinks. All of it is illegal. Putting booze in someone's drink without their knowledge is spiking and that's illegal too.

GradToBe · 01/01/2017 13:25

It may of not been spiked. I have friends who you wouldn't guess looking at them that also add extras to their drinks. It could of easily been someone added something to their own drink before abandoning it

idontlikealdi · 01/01/2017 13:27

I doubt it was spiked, a few glasses at home that made you think it was ok to side swipe a glass of fizz that wasn't yours, you must have been pissed in the first place. 111 is not necessary, sounds like a hangover.

Odd thing to do.

FutureMrsRanj · 01/01/2017 13:27

Surely if you put something in your own drink you make sure you drink it? Op I hope you start to feel better soon

FutureMrsRanj · 01/01/2017 13:30

Also I'm a bit shocked at the suggestion that op only has a hangover, I'm sure she would know the difference, I feel awful today and have memory loss but I know no one spiked my drink because I imagine there is a huge difference in severity of symptoms

OhMrBadger · 01/01/2017 13:32

That the OP drank someone else's drink is irrelevant. That she 'mineswept' is also irrelevant.

OP you are having a nasty reaction to something and you are suffering. Deal with that first and foremost, worry about informing pub later. It sounds awful and I really hope you feel better soon.

Look after yourself.

manhowdy · 01/01/2017 13:34

Generally I am dubious about a lot of spiking claims (who the hell are all these people giving their away drugs for free?)

But this really does sound like a ketamine reaction. In my youth I took this drug sometimes and used to have to really focus in order to wee: run the taps, think pissy thoughts etc. Mind over matter. It's like it blocks the connection between brain and bladder.

I'm a bit shocked that your DP saw you morph into this state and didn't take you to A&E, having known what you drank. You need to pull him up on that.

If you've still not wee'd you need a catheter. Get to hospital.

WanderlustQueen · 01/01/2017 13:39

I'm a bit shocked at some of the post here to be honest - it sound exactly like OP has been spiked. Zero to so wasted you can be moved round like a puppet is not normal after so few drinks.

And of blooming course you should report it to the bar! One of their patrons has potentially walked into this bar and spiked a drink with goodness knows what intention. If they are aware this has happened then they can make sure they can be more vigilant, speak to the police or - as someone has already said - it may be this happened before and this may help them catch the bugger. As a former bar manager, I would have wanted to know if this had happened.

OP - you've learned your lesson about minesweeping but perhaps now you could call the out of hours doctor and just speak to them about your symptoms. Better safe than sorry.

sleepachu · 01/01/2017 13:39

The most likely thing is someone putting ket in their own drink - I've never had it but I know lots of people take it like that. The bladder thing is what makes me think it's ket and not GHB or something. I have interstitial cystitis and when I was first having problems they constantly pressed me about ketamine, apparently it's a huge source of bladder issues in young women. Grim.

Call 111 and ask them about the weeing if you don't manage to soon. You could get a flaming urine infection or worse retaining for too long.

OhMrBadger · 01/01/2017 13:39

When I started to read your OP ny first thought was dodgy, cheap alcohol. I've been caught like that before where I've ordered white wine in a pub and had a nasty reaction after just 1 small glass and another time at a friend's house where I had a glass of white wine that had been sat opened in the fridge for quite a long time. Really grim but your situation is different. The racing heart and being unable to wee are red flags.
