To think I got 'spiked'

MadHattersWineParty · 01/01/2017 11:17

I did what you're not supposed to do.

I picked up an abandoned glass of fizz, and I drank it as I'm flat broke after Christmas, had a Diet Coke at the pub but wanted a fizz and couldn't afford to buy my own Xmas Blush it was just sitting there at the bar. Already had a few glasses of wine at home with a meal then popped into our local to see some friends at about 11:30. DP had to carry me home, (his poor back!) I can't remember a thing and apparently was pretty much unconscious and when I did wake up a bit, totally incoherent- I couldn't form any words. He said he had to move all my limbs like a puppet to get me on my side in bed then didn't want to leave me alone so just played on iPad most of the night.

I feel appalling now. Shaky and sick and a racing heart and I've drank loads of water but can't seem to wee Xmas Blush

It was the local bit-up-it's-Arse-gastro-pub and I know 'mine-sweeping' a drink is a bit student and scummy and I shouldn't have done it, but I'm starting to think it must have been laced with something and whoever it was bought for thought better of it and left it alone. Total memory blackout from about half an hour after I drank it, and before that I was ever so slightly tipsy but holding a conversation and dancing. Only wanted to stick my head in to see in the New Year.

I'm so stupid aren't I Xmas Blush Xmas Blush

That's alright! I thought I was getting myself confused there Grin

PerspicaciaTick · 01/01/2017 12:31

It was a "local bit-up-it's-Arse-gastro-pub", no mention of any students. Just one person who seems to have had a bizarre reaction to a drink that may or may not have been spiked.

All I'm suggesting is that she passes along details of a campaign about awareness of drink spiking to the bar. If you look at the website, you'll see what they are advising bars to do to help.

I don't understand why you think that is an issue TBH.

lougle · 01/01/2017 12:31

If you can't wee there are three explanations:

  1. You're dehydrated so haven't got any urine to expel.
  2. Your kidneys have been damaged so aren't producing urine.
  3. Your bladder is in retention so you can't release the urine you've produced.

You should really go to the walk-in-centre or A&E if you are still feeling tachycardic (racing heart) and can't wee. They can check your bladder volume and sort any retention, resolve dehydration and any other effects, and run a toxicology from your urine or blood.

MadHattersWineParty · 01/01/2017 12:32

Its not a student area at all. It's 'naice' suburban SW London. I'd taste a vodka in a glass of cava or whatever it was and that wouldn't have pushed me over the edge like that anyway.

MountainPeaks I can't contemplate food, ever (obviously will try and eat later)

I don't think my DP got medical help as he didn't think it was required I suppose- he looked after me all night, put me on my side, tried to get me to drink water when I was awake etc etc. He did say he thought i'd taken something but was confused as I'm not a drug-taker- but then thought maybe I'd been drinking more than he'd seen like shots at the bar or something. (He went outside for a cigar with his mate and I was in a state by the time he got back) I definitely did not drink anything else though. He only meant by saying 'he could have done anything' that I was so out of it if someone had horrible intentions I wouldn't have been able to do anything about it.

lougle · 01/01/2017 12:34

I'd hate to think how I'd react. Half a glass of wine sees me under the table (hence I'm teetotal), so anyone spiking my drink would get far more than they bargained for. Probably cardiac arrest!

MountainPeaks · 01/01/2017 12:35

MadHatters If you are in SW - are you close to Chelsea and Westminster? Honestly, I'd pop in and ask to see the GP team there and explain what has happened - the triage nurse may send you around to A and E. They have almost instant toxicology screening.

MountainPeaks · 01/01/2017 12:36

lougle Drink spiking can cause anyone to have a heart attack - it doesn't matter if you are teetotal or not. The effects and not proportional to how much, or how little someone drinks.

hoddtastic · 01/01/2017 12:38

i've been spiked before, about 20 years ago, it wasn't E or ketamine or anything like that as I have taken that a million times before (slight exaggeration) this was something that made me lose my sight and couldn't work out which way was up/down/forwards. Came on really quickly, literally in the cab home, by time I got to my address 5 mins later DP was waiting for me (thankfully) and spent the night keeping watch over me.

This OP if i remember rightly wasn't saying so long ago that her family were disapproving about her boozing. Are you sure it was just the half a bottle of wine OP? Minesweeping in a pub doesn't sound like anything any adult without a mega booze issue would be doing on NYE.

Sorry this happened to you though.

MadHattersWineParty · 01/01/2017 12:38

Quite close MountainPeaks- heart has calmed down quite a bit but am yet to wee. I'm four pints of water down so I'll keep chugging and then see.

I'm pretty shocked that people are so blasé just because it wasn't meant fir her.

Doesn't matter who drank it clearly someone in the building was spiking drinks and may well have been caught on cctv so of course it's worth speaking to the bar

MadHattersWineParty · 01/01/2017 12:40

Definitely only had the half-bottle of wine and the glass of whatever- DP and are I are partied out from Christmas and I intended to take it easy- I didn't even want to go anywhere last night really.

There's nothing clear about it at all.

Lots of people add stronger alcohol to their own drinks.

afterthis · 01/01/2017 12:45

I got spiked as a teenager. Friend & I ordered alcopops & I saw the barman take something from his pocket & flick it into the bottles using his thumbs. I told my friend, grabbed both drinks & threw them in the bin. My friend was really pissed off that I threw her drink away Hmm

IAmNotTheOneWhoKnocks · 01/01/2017 12:47

*There's nothing clear about it at all.

Would OP's reaction be more normal if it was a vodka instead of champagne, then? It's still only one drink on top of the half bottle of wine. No matter what drink was in that glass, her reaction was extreme.

MountainPeaks · 01/01/2017 12:48

"Minesweeping in a pub doesn't sound like anything any adult without a mega booze issue would be doing on NYE"

Totally disagree with this. Minesweeping is done by a range of people in a range of situations which may include being broke, avoiding long cues at bars, having been refused service earlier, last orders having already been called or simply not realising.

Mad - glad the heart feels like it is calming down.

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/01/2017 12:48

Think is glasses of fizz are never full.

So on half a bottle of wine and even a full shot of alcohol in this gales topped up with fizz, still doesn't sound enough to have the effect it did tbh

hefzi · 01/01/2017 12:49

Drink spiking is incredibly unusual - there was a report last year (?) about that concluded it's something of an urban myth - the symptoms OP is describing this morning are also those of a hangover. And in one post, she says she was "a bit tipsy" when she was dancing prior to the drink. Add to that a glass which was already "flat" (which takes a good while to happen) so could have contained something additional in the way of spirits... So tipsy+drink mixing +possible "fortified" fizz?

Does no-one else find that how they cope with alcohol can vary hugely? Maybe it's because I'm a very infrequent drinker, but sometimes, I can have a pint and go straight to pleasantly pissed, other times a whole bottle of wine or half s dozen pints and feel stone cold sober: could also be a factor here.

I'm sorry OP feels lousy, but there's nothing here that makes me think "spiked"

QuestionableMouse · 01/01/2017 12:50

I'm guessing it's now been over 12 hours with no wee? You should really seek medical advice. How do you feel otherwise?

IAmNotTheOneWhoKnocks · 01/01/2017 12:50

For what it's worth, my OH had her drink spiked about 10 years ago. She was only on her third drink and became an absolute mess. Couldn't stand, couldn't form words, no control of her body whatsoever - I took her straight to A&E. No way I would have just put her to bed in that state.

MountainPeaks · 01/01/2017 12:51

Herfzi There are actually no reliable statistics on drink spiking in the UK. Like other crimes which are central to women being the victim, it is hugely unreported.

And the OPs symptoms are all symptoms of drink spiking. So if "spiked" isn't one of the possible scenarios that is coming into your head - it's because you of your lack of knowledge.

WorraLiberty · 01/01/2017 12:52

Ahh well we could sit here all day and night, wondering whether the OP picked up a drink that was deliberately spiked, or whether the person knew what they'd added to their own drink.

If she seriously believes someone is going around spiking other peoples drinks and she wants to prevent it happening to others, she needs to get herself off for some blood tests now.

Otherwise, it's become a pretty pointless conversation full of nothing but speculation.

Hope you feel better soon OP, whatever you decide to do Thanks

OnionKnight · 01/01/2017 12:53

I'm a bit Hmm that a grown adult minesweeps.

It sounds like the drink was spiked but the only way to find out is to get tested, although I'm not sure what exactly can be done, the drink wasn't given to you.

Miserylovescompany2 · 01/01/2017 12:56

I'd stop drinking the water if you aren't passing any. Phone 111 and ask for advice. You've drank 4 pints of water and haven't passed any urine. That's worrying in itself.

Whatever was in the drink could of affected your heart?

Lorelei76 · 01/01/2017 12:57

But the op drank a drink that wasn't hers
Why would the bar owner bother looking at cctv, someone just put something else in their own drink probably.

toptoe · 01/01/2017 12:58

only way to know is to go and get seen to

www.nhs.uk/Livewell/abuse/Pages/drink-spiking.aspx#whattodo

more than likely it was that glass you drank. Not the crime of the century and you can tell nhs staff you bought it and left it when you went to the toilet if you like. Unless you want to go down a more formal route with the pub and log it as a crime. Remember the real offence was someone spiking it. It could have been very serious if you were on your own and was sick or collapsed outside and got hypothermic etc.
