Should not be my first choice to be made a 'Sir' ? Surely there are others who would be more worthy of the title am IBU OR DOES ANYONE ELSE AGREE?

Another one here who thought Ken Dodd was dead!

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 01/01/2017 11:11

I think he deserves an honour far more than the WAG who disrespected the system by boasting about her OBE days before it was announced.

I'm not particularly a VB fan (and can't barely tolerate 'brand Beckham') but I can't stand it when people refer to her as a WAG. She carved a career in the most successful female band in U.K. history long before she got together with her husband (no matter what you think of the Spice Girls' music that much is true) and has gone on to launch a successful fashion brand (again her clothes aren't my taste but someone is buying them). Let's not trivialise her achievements please!

GladAllOver · 01/01/2017 11:38

Of course you are right, Cherry.
In calling her a WAG I was simply applying the same degree of disrespect for her that she gave to the honour she was given.

Just because someone is rich and famous doesn't give them the right to break the strict terms under which they are awarded the honour. Every other recipient managed it.

Funnyfive · 01/01/2017 13:44

I understand the celeb honours only make up a small part of the list but I fail to understand why people like Ken Dodd and Bruce Forsyth get knighthoods and people like John Simpson don't.

The programme on John Simpson before Christmas was amazing, he put his life in danger to report from war zones and he only has an MBE or an OBE! The whole system needs a revamp.

And I think the sports people are deserving of their awards, they represent GB all over the world, usually get paid very little to do without major sponsorship and are excellent examples for children and adults alike.

dontbesillyhenry · 01/01/2017 13:48

Ken Dodd died.
Did he?
No- Doddy

I'll get my coat

InformalRoman · 01/01/2017 14:11

Lester Piggott was stripped of his OBE for tax evasion.

Ken Dodd should count himself lucky he got acquitted on his tax evasion court case. Very lucky.

somewheresomehow · 01/01/2017 14:15

I don't see why not !
He's done and earned it more than the greedy/grabby Beckhams ever have

SalemSaberhagen · 01/01/2017 14:25

Greedy how?

mydogmymate · 01/01/2017 14:34

I've always had a soft spot for him, he was an acquaintance of my dad as his family delivered coal in knotty ash in Liverpool. I've met him a few times and found him lovely. He gave me half a crown each time - loads at the time!
God, I'm old Confused

iminshock · 01/01/2017 15:08

We were in the front row of his show about 6 months ago. He spoke back and forth to me and DH throughout.
None of it was cruel or unkind.

His comic timing is genius.

He also has a fantastic singing voice.
One moment the audience was laughing and a few minutes later , crying at the pathos in his songs.

At the end of the show he climbed down and gave me one of his tickling sticks / dusters. Smile

iminshock · 01/01/2017 15:59

He was acquitted in the tax dodge trial.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/01/2017 16:29

I think nurses, Doctors, Fire fighters, police, Paramedics, Midwives, Soldiers. Teachers ect. Should be put forward for knighthoods OBE's.
Not comedians.

NobodyputsBabyinaKorma · 01/01/2017 17:25

I don't understand why Mick Jagger was knighted. Puzzled me for years, it has.

Xmaslover · 01/01/2017 17:33

'He was acquitted of tax evasion'

Looking into this it seems he was going to be found guilty until letters in support of him were given in evidence by Thatcher , Edward Heath and Harold Wilson
The old boys club can help you get out of things it seems

AlmaMartyr · 01/01/2017 17:44

Nobody - yes, Mick Jagger is one of the most baffling ones for me too. Lost all interest in the honours after that.

JinnanTonik · 01/01/2017 17:45

It seems like a chunk of those receiving awards were just doing their job, I do my job but not working in a political, humanitarian or Old Boys Club role Im very unlikely to get one.

....Victoria Beckham, pleasant enough woman, good mother BUT really, for what?

Ken Dodd has been entertaining people for decades, had VB been 80yo and still been in the Spice 'old' Girls I could see why!

SwedishEdith · 01/01/2017 17:48

"I think nurses, Doctors, Fire fighters, police, Paramedics, Midwives, Soldiers. Teachers ect. "

They are, though. I think anyone can nominate anyone.

stumblymonkey · 01/01/2017 17:52

I have a signed Ken Dodd tickling stick.

Bet you're all not at all jealous

DameXanaduBramble · 01/01/2017 17:52

Seriously? The British icon who is Mick Jagger, whose band helped shape music as we know it now? I despair, I really do. How can you NOT get that, even if he's not your cuppa.

Littlelondoner · 01/01/2017 17:56

Wifflewaffles they are though. If you read the full.honnors list these people make up the majority of the honnors. I had 2x teachers from my old school alone who have made the honnors list in past. Anyone can make honnors. Services to medicine charity work education is what majority of honnors are made up of.

BoneyBackJefferson · 01/01/2017 18:08

Wifflewaffles
They should really honour surgeons and doctors saving lives,

You can submit the names of these people yourself, although it doesn't stop the local arseholes from getting on the honours list.

CherryChasingDotMuncher

She carved a career in the most successful female band in U.K. history long before she got together with her husband

They answered an ad in the paper and had the the entire weight of the company and their companies marketing team behind them.
Its hardly carving out a career.

As for Ken Dodd, when I worked at Butlins he was called "A punters dream and stage managers nightmare"

Because his show would overrun for hours.

NobodyputsBabyinaKorma · 02/01/2017 07:37

DameXanadu - Mick Jagger: former heroin addict, tax exile and utter skank where women are concerned. Not worthy of a knighthood IMHO.
