Should not be my first choice to be made a 'Sir' ? Surely there are others who would be more worthy of the title am IBU OR DOES ANYONE ELSE AGREE?

I watched the programme about him tonight. He's a marvel and a national treasure. A really wonderful man and the knighthood is very much deserved.

IvorHughJarrs · 01/01/2017 03:03

YABU He is a renowned entertainer and does huge amounts of charity work

Personally, I think these awards should be for long term excellence or dedication so people like Ken Dodd and Bruce Forsyth are far more deserving than sportspeople who are young and have already been rewarded with medals, etc

CakesRUs · 01/01/2017 03:15

Being old doesn't qualify you for a knighthood. I don't understand why he is?

EnidButton · 01/01/2017 05:32

He has done a huge amount for charities and good god he works hard! He has a big following and has been a successful entertainer for a very long time. He is talented. So he is a good solid choice imo.

I don't personally find him funny or would go to see a show of his. Not a fan of his work. But I'm pleased he was made a Sir. I think he deserves the official acknowledgment of what he's achieved.

SquinkiesRule · 01/01/2017 06:37

Lovely man who is still performing and the money goes to charity now.
He does an annual show near us in a huge theatre and it's a sell out each time, the money goes to our local hospice.
He isn't one of those glitzy stars, he deserves it.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 01/01/2017 07:05

I was chuffed when I moved to Liverpool and discovered Knotty Ash was a real place !

Xmaslover · 01/01/2017 07:05

Anyone who tax evades should not be honoured.
He seemed proud of the fact he got away with it

deloresclaiborne · 01/01/2017 07:18

does anyone remember the two diddimen he was in court with
diddi he pay
and diddi he fuck

i'll get me coat

ForalltheSaints · 01/01/2017 07:40

Surprised given the tax evasion, but his advisor and manager should also have been in the dock. More deserving than Sir Philip Green or most of the politicians who have been knighted.

Thinkingblonde · 01/01/2017 07:42

I saw him live at a show in Blackpool in the 80's, My face was aching from laughing so much, as a previous poster has already said there wasn't a single swear word or smutty joke for the three hours he was on stage for.
He deserves his Knighthood. He's earned it.

Glastokitty · 01/01/2017 07:42

I'm impressed a few people beat me to the Ken Dodd's Dad' dog's dead joke. Grin

sashh · 01/01/2017 07:53

Almost every other entertainer of his generation received an honour years ago but they made Ken wait until he Is 89!

Maybe he has paid his taxes now.

Maybe he has paid the children who ere the 'diddy men'.

What happened to his heart condition that his lawyers claimed would kill him if he was taken to court?

I have huge respect for those who turn down these awards.

BertrandRussell · 01/01/2017 08:05

"I don't blame him for not paying tax, very little of it (virtually none) went to Liverpool or Up North, in general."

Sorry? You are joking, I hope?

insancerre · 01/01/2017 08:11

I think we are scraingvthe bottom of the barrel when Ken Dodd and Victoria Beckham are given honours

Wifflewaffles · 01/01/2017 08:22

They should really honour surgeons and doctors saving lives, over famous people. The people working in SCBU around the clock, and fire fighters. All those unsung heroes. Or do they, and we just don't hear about it?

DameXanaduBramble · 01/01/2017 08:31

He has one because he has successfully been in the industry for decades, his shows sell out, his charity work is legendary and he holds special memories for many, many people. If you don't get that then perhaps you need to do some research.

Julius02 · 01/01/2017 08:32

Wiffle - I have some knowledge of this through my job. There was around 74% this time who were not celebs but people who have done great things for their communities or charity. More than 50% were women.

Btw I think it's an utter joke that VB has received an award...

DameXanaduBramble · 01/01/2017 08:33

Though I don't agree with the honours thing per se, I can see why he has been awarded.

MoonlightMedicine · 01/01/2017 08:34

I was also sure he had died!

MsHooliesCardigan · 01/01/2017 08:35

I'm another one who thought he popped his clogs years ago. Wiffle they do give honours to 'ordinary people' as well - it just doesn't make the news. They were saying on the radio that, this year, they actually made sure that the majority of those getting honours were ordinary people doing good works - maybe as a way of trying to amend for Dave dishing out gongs to his mates which made a farce of the whole system. I think he gave an MBE to Sam's stylist and his hairdresser Hmm

HermioneWoozle · 01/01/2017 08:40

YABVU and rather embarrassingly ignorant.

He isn't particularly my cup of tea either but his contribution to and influence on the entertainment industry puts him up there with those who have been acknowledged years ago, and much more than some.

The BBC did a programme on him recently. I suggest you find it and educate yourself.

TheHoldings · 01/01/2017 08:47

I don't care how talented he is - I don't agree with celebs recieving honours for just doing their job well, it's time this crap ended. So many people doing voluntary work their whole lives - never get rewarded and I believe are more deserving of recognition.

Believeitornot · 01/01/2017 08:51

I'd rather ken Dodd got honoured than a rich Tory donor who apparently deserved his because of his "civic duty". Which was just him giving nearly £1m to the Tory party.

hollyisalovelyname · 01/01/2017 09:48

I just hope they never introduce an Honours list in Ireland.
I can only imagine that the undeserving would receive them ( through political cronyism) and unsung heroes would remain unhonoured.

GladAllOver · 01/01/2017 11:07

I think he deserves an honour far more than the WAG who disrespected the system by boasting about her OBE days before it was announced.
