To renounce my vegetarianism?

nethunsreject · 28/12/2016 21:46

I've been veggie all my life. My parents were hippies. Several reasons I want to eat meat occasionally:

  1. I eat dairy, which is as bad as the meat industry.
  2. I don't have a problem with animals being killed for food. I dislike intensive farming but, as I only want meat once a week, we can buy from the local farm which is high welfare.
  3. I feel that life is short, I'm middle aged and I'll be dead one day. I'm blessed in living in modern western world where I have the chance to enjoy very many things.
Anyone gone this way too?

May I just draw attention to the fact that the OP was asking about HER possibly eating meat.

I have read the OP several times and nowhere can I see the words "Please tell me about why you find the idea of eating meat utterly disgusting and immoral"

MistresssIggi · 28/12/2016 23:21

The majority of people on mumsnet will be meat eaters, so of course they will not have an issue with you "renouncing" your vegetarianism and joining the dark side

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 28/12/2016 23:21

You are all somewhat defensive and quite bullying .....why?? Because I can give up meat and you can't? That's pathetic! I said right at the start you have to just do what you can. Even if you cut down a little, that's something!!! Anyway, night all!!

CartwheelGirl · 28/12/2016 23:22

I tried vegetarianism for a short time and found it limiting and difficult, both for me, and for people around me who often make adjustments for the sake of keeping peace. If you were my friend, I would be quietly celebrating Grin

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 28/12/2016 23:23

Ally...I have been vegan for 34 years. Maybe I am not helpful....who knows!!! I just am very fond of animals and that's what drives me. Anyway, goodnight!!

ClimbingPenguin · 28/12/2016 23:24

I've been vegan for 15 years, also for welfare reasons rather than inherent dislike of killing animals (I have no issue with that).

I now live in an area of plenty of local farms and farm shops and consider eating meat occasionally provided I know it's source. What stops me is the worry that it's a slippery slope and not sure how I would feel about it if I actually did.

However I would never have dairy again.

So in summary, I'm still not sure.

GarrulousGrimoire · 28/12/2016 23:26

I really don't know why people think the dairy industry is so evil Confused Perhaps outside of the U.K. where most of the cruelty films are from but all the dairy farms near me have their girls out on grass most of the time, they get to a good old age, yes bull calves are put into the meat industry but then that's the same as those bred for meat... Unless you buy suckled meat they will have been removed from their mothers too.

The cows are generally in good health, not a huge amount of factory farming etc.

It annoys me as it seems that most vegans/veggies care about the environment / welfare which is great but then think nothing of:

There are many other examples. Not to mention the food miles! The loss of bees to agrochemicals!

The fact is whatever we eat some poor bugger will suffer somewhere else. It is better for animals and the environment to buy local and in season, whether that be veggies or meat. And the UK can never be self sustaining as a vegetarian nation on that basis as there isn't enough suitable arable land. Where cows and sheep can feed on the uplands, swamps and lowlands there could never be crops grown. And without slurry and manure then there is no fertiliser for the vegetarians plants! Meaning yet more chemicals required.

Not sure where I am going with this other than by being alive and eating you will be screwing someone/thing over somewhere so just do the best you can 😂

KnitMeAUnicorn · 28/12/2016 23:29

LastGirl, I can't take you seriously due to your overuse of exclamation marks, I'm afraid. But it's nice to know I'm a 'hateful' person for going back to meat as abstaining simply didn't seem one of my life's major priorities any more, as it had done when I was 16. Thanks for that, though. I'm clearly a disgusting, evil person and deserve all your contempt (!)

PyongyangKipperbang · 28/12/2016 23:29

Because I can give up meat and you can't? That's pathetic!

And everyone else is bullying?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont want to give up meat, so I dont see how I am being at all pathetic. I made my choice and I have stuck to it, so actually I am a better person than those pathetic vegans who stuck it out for 30 years and then had a steak :)

NEWSFLASH - not everyone cares about the same things that you care about, so wind your neck in. Do what you can for the cause you care about, but stop being so bloody sanctimonious about it. No one cares about what you eat except you, sorry 'bout that.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 28/12/2016 23:31

You're in good company KnitWine

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 28/12/2016 23:31

You have Unicorn in your name and you can't take me seriously? Seriously? Do what you want, eat animals all the love long day....just don't use ME as your excuse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TheSlaughterOfHerodificado · 28/12/2016 23:31

I was vegetarian for 18 years and then my dog died. I was very upset - and all I wanted was meat. (Strange comfort food, I know.)

I went from not being able to walk past a butcher's shop because the dead smell made me vomit (I became very sensitive to the smell of uncooked flesh), to eating just about every type of meat I could lay my teeth into.

I settled down a couple of years ago to three/four meat meals a week. I still like veggie food, and my cooking was far more adventurous when I ate veggie. I tried veganism but couldn't get away with it as to me, nothing tasted of anything.

Like others, it was the animal welfare aspect that upset me. Like others, I source ethical produced meat.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 28/12/2016 23:31

That's it-we're officially out of exclamation marks.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 28/12/2016 23:32

And calm down, Last. You sound hysterical.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 28/12/2016 23:34

Pong....I don't care! You obviously missed the part where I said people should make their own choice!!

I'm obviously the baddie here for giving a shit about animals, so I'll leave you to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GarrulousGrimoire · 28/12/2016 23:35

Champagne I have a feeling she isn't done yet so I nipped out for a few >> !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 28/12/2016 23:35

Hysterical- nice word!

Champagneformyrealfriends · 28/12/2016 23:36

Garrulous thanks-I was getting a bit concerned for a minute Grin

Lorelei76 · 28/12/2016 23:36

I'm pleased to say I e never met a vegan with either Last's attitude or one that reflects that joke upthread.

My vegan friends and rellies have mostly had the same experience as Romesh Rangathan who said the abuse he got for being vegan made him miss racism and sadly he wasn't joking.

Also, I've noticed that some people are okay with it for religious reasons but query the atheist ones. Same with booze I find.

1horatio · 28/12/2016 23:36

last

I don't want to use you for anything, calm down.

If you really cared about the animals you'd try to be a more positive spokesperson for veganism...

Champagneformyrealfriends · 28/12/2016 23:36

I don't make up the words, Last, I just use them. Once at a time.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 28/12/2016 23:37

Grim, you are one bully and i am reporting you.

PyongyangKipperbang · 28/12/2016 23:38

Oh and Last the phrase "giving up" implies that you are choosing to sacrifice something you desire. Allen Carr insists that "giving up" is not to be used when quitting cigarettes as it gives them an attractive allure. So I find your choice of words and your hatred of meat eaters quite interesting.

Doth the lady protest too much?

GarrulousGrimoire · 28/12/2016 23:39

For giving you exclamation marks Shock I was being helpful.

You could of course try reading and responding to my perfectly reasoned post above ^^ that queries the ethics and sustainability of veganism in the UK.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 28/12/2016 23:40

I don't think about 'right words' when I talk about my veganism. I just love animals and am so fond of them.....you all have been so horrible to me tonight I was just trying to tell you how much I love animals
