To renounce my vegetarianism?

I've been veggie all my life. My parents were hippies. Several reasons I want to eat meat occasionally:

  1. I eat dairy, which is as bad as the meat industry.
  2. I don't have a problem with animals being killed for food. I dislike intensive farming but, as I only want meat once a week, we can buy from the local farm which is high welfare.
  3. I feel that life is short, I'm middle aged and I'll be dead one day. I'm blessed in living in modern western world where I have the chance to enjoy very many things.
Anyone gone this way too?

nethun

I know, that's what you said...?

That's just my suggestion. Cutting out dairy was really great for me personally.

And whilst I don't eat a lot of meat (and we do t have factory farmed meat in our house, btw) I realised that I'm just not well without it.
Plus I like it and don't think there's anything wrong with killing animals.

nethunsreject · 28/12/2016 22:44

Good point, Thing.
Yeah, ll, one of my veggie pals is always furious when people think she's a huge animal lover: she hates animals Grin says that's why she's not eating them!
Eggs are fine, we live near a battery rescue so have several retired girls at home.

Thanks all. Sorry, I misread you Horatio.
I need to get to sleep but many thanks for all of the replies here. Good to think out loud! Flowers

What's wrong with changing your mind though?? If you decide, based on research, emotional growth or a change in views to change your mind, then why is that a bad thing? It shows strength of character imo.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 28/12/2016 22:47

Name..... I have no problem at all with free thinking people!!! In fact, I LOVE that!!! I just do not like people who made the decision themselves to abstain from meat because of animal welfare, and then change their minds because they like meat!!! They are traitors I think.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 28/12/2016 22:48

Traitors?!? To whom?

lljkk · 28/12/2016 22:50

People need to be able to change their values over time without shame just because they changed their perspective, otherwise we'd all be Donald Trump ignorant and inflexible.

1horatio · 28/12/2016 22:51

So, people shouldn't change their minds, in your opinion? if I were to change my mind about eating meat and became a vegan I'd be a traitor to carnivores? Or would that be ok because it's the 'right decision'?

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 28/12/2016 22:51

Champagne I doubt animals would see those people as strong!! If you care about animals, and despise their suffering, giving up meat as a result, then stick to it!!! If you back down later, because you like the taste or some other pathetic reason, then you are hateful!!!! You KNOW yet suffering animals go through, so to eat them just means you don't care!!!

I remember the documentary some years ago, about an abattoir. One of the pigs had a heart attack going in, through FEAR!!

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 28/12/2016 22:53

Horatio, change your mind all you want. If you haven't got the strength of your convictions that is YOUR problem, not mine.

VladmirsPoutine · 28/12/2016 22:54

It's perfectly acceptable to change your perspective.
Go for it OP, I've had periods of veganism and periods of eating meat. I didn't make a show if it. It was all rather unremarkable to me and those whom I ate with.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 28/12/2016 22:54

Last that's an awful lot of exclamation marks for a Wedneday night.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 28/12/2016 22:55

If you want to eat meat, then go ahead. Don't feel the need to justify it, to me or anyone else!! You do it because you like it, and to hell with the poor animals, right? And that is your choice!!!

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 28/12/2016 22:57

Haha yes I know!! Sorry!!😊😊😊😊

1horatio · 28/12/2016 22:58

I eat meat (not factory farmed, admitted) and I hunt. I would have presumed an animal lover would want me to change my mind? And wouldn't say:
Horatio, change your mind all you want. If you haven't got the strength of your convictions that is YOUR problem, not mine.

I thought you cared? Hypocrite 😂

GhostOfChristmasYetToCome · 28/12/2016 22:59

I'm vegetarian.

I understand. I occasionally think about it. I'm against intensive farming and other poor practices, but I don't disagree with eating animals (I'm not a 'meat is murder' veggie). In fact, I have more of an issue with people who say, "ooh I couldn't eat a bunny they're so cute..."!

But I'm leaning more towards veganism, to be honest with you. The dairy and egg industries are appalling Sad

KeptOnRaining · 28/12/2016 22:59

LastGirl. Feel free to leave some '!' for others to use 😂

DistanceCall · 28/12/2016 23:01

LastGirl, people are allowed to change their minds, you know.

And just to remind you - animals aren't people. I don't think anyone would deny that it's absolutely best that animals be treated as humanely as possible. But they're not people.

KeptOnRaining · 28/12/2016 23:07

I dont really understand why you want to start eating meat. It sounds like teenage rebellion, delayed 😬 it just comes over as 'because I can'. Which is fine, you can, but do you really want to or are you just trying to prove a point?

I've been veggie over 20 years, since I was 20 and had wanted to since I was much younger. There's no way I could go back to eating meat.

I'd rather no one ate meat/fish etc but it's not my decision, what you choose to eat is your business and on your conscience - or not. I don't think you need to renounce your vegetarianism, just try a small amount of meat if you really, really want to. Go easy though because your body isn't used to it and might reject it (might not too).

Laniakea · 28/12/2016 23:08

OP I was also raised veggie by hippy parents!

Of three siblings I'm the only one who hasn't eaten birds or mammals Wink We've all been through vegan phases - our parents are vegan atm I think. Dsis ate meat occasionally through her teens, dbro became a committed carnivore through his 20s & I ate fish a couple of times a month through my 30s - I was pregnant a lot and really craved it. Over the last 3-4 years we've all become veggie again though - I'm once again repulsed by the look/smell/thought of meat.

You don't really have to commit yourself to anything - just eat what you fancy. It's interesting to see a few other raised veggie ppl on this thread though - you don't often find others outside the alternative world.

Lorelei76 · 28/12/2016 23:12

Last, if that's a Gilmore Girls ref, I've never seen it.

Convictions change. When I was veggie I didn't feel the need to judge those who weren't.

I have thought a lot about the intensive farming thing and I guess that might be why I'm feeling totally off meat. I have a feeling I might even go vegan but I can't tell if it's body or mind that want to.

Plus I'm fucking terrified of long life and the vegan rellies are thriving in their 80s. Can't take up smoking as I have asthma!

allybally73 · 28/12/2016 23:15

Lastgirlontheleft - I can only imagine from your posts that you are quite new to veganism, your attitude is not helpful and I feel it gives the rest of us a bad name. Are you suggesting that once you have decided to renounce animal produce, that there is never any going back ? Perhaps swear under oath never to eat meat again after a taste of a veggie burger ? It's just silliness, people grow and change all the time.
Our dietary preferences are just a small part of who we are, there's no need to make them into your personality,

JackShit · 28/12/2016 23:17

Veggie for 30 years here. Of course yanbu to make your own life decisions. Personally I find the idea of eating an animal's muscles beyond grim.

PyongyangKipperbang · 28/12/2016 23:17

Sadly there a lot of militant vegans out there who actually do their cause more harm than good.

Not for nothing is there a joke
