To merge our double barrelled surname.

Getting married next year. Both me and do have double barrelled surnames. For an example think : Mr smith-Brown, Miss Lloyd-bloggs.
We have dc, who have "Smith-Brown " as their surname.
When we marry, I would like to all become a mixture of the surname taking one name from each (long story but we basically have one part to each of our surnames which mean something) so becoming 'Lloyd-Smith'.
Eldest dc is preschool age so is now aware of last name, would it be easy enough to change It?
Is it even an option?

So a different double barrelled meshing to the one the DC have?

I'm not sure. TBH I'd be tempted to stick with the original meshing.

yoowhoo · 28/12/2016 20:42

When I first started reading this I thought you wanted to merge them altogether so 'smith-brown-lloyd-bloggs' and was definitely going to say yabu 😂
But no, I can't see why you can't merge your names.

Manumission · 28/12/2016 20:42

Oh sorry, the DC don't have a meshing do they?

Yes do it.

FurryLittleTwerp · 28/12/2016 20:42

Vair vair posh people sometimes have quadruple-barrelled names

Smith-Brown-Lloyd-Bloggs Xmas Grin

It is an option to do what you are suggesting - just paperwork really.

QuandryQueen · 28/12/2016 20:44

Tbh I couldn't be bothered with the faff. I think the time for meshing would have been on registering the first dc but I'm a lazy cow who still has half of my stuff in my maiden name 6 years after marriage!

ParrotPudding · 28/12/2016 20:44

yoowoo tempting though that is...
No DC have DPs surname and we would like to all become a mixture of both our names, so one surname from each.

Would your parents whose name you drop from each double barrel be annoyed? Or are they older double barreled names?

CMOTDibbler · 28/12/2016 20:47

That sounds like a lovely idea - you all get the new name together to mark your marriage

ParrotPudding · 28/12/2016 20:47

furry
I worry that we are not quite posh enough. Plus, both dc have 3/4 middle names each so I would be living in constant fear of a lawsuit Xmas Grin

Get out pieces of paper and scramble the initials around. Make sure they don't spell out anything awful before you decide!!

Manumission · 28/12/2016 20:49

It could be exciting for them, explained in the context of a wedding. I'm imagining your eldest telling his teacher why Smile

ParrotPudding · 28/12/2016 20:50

sj my name is made up of my mother's maiden name and the name of a man who turned out not to be my father.
DPs name is made up of the man who was thought to be his father for 15yrs and the man it actually turned out to be.

manumission I imagine eldest will have great fun explaining her name either way Hmm

FurryLittleTwerp · 28/12/2016 20:53

Go with an anagram perhaps? Yooneek names a "a thing" apparently...

SMITHBROWNLLOYDBLOGGS could become BOGBOWSLOGSMITHYDORL

or something - I think I've missed a few

ParrotPudding · 28/12/2016 20:55

furry we just aren't down with that, just not that hip and happening. we both like 1 out of our 2 names.

OP posts:
Manumission · 28/12/2016 20:56

I just meant all the fun at once and their own bit of news about them in all the hoopla.

But do feel free to "Hmm" away

🙄

FurryLittleTwerp · 28/12/2016 20:57

I'm being silly two gins down

I think see what flows well off the tongue, try to avoid causing offence among other family members & do it, especially if your children are small & adaptable!

OSETmum · 28/12/2016 20:58

Wow that's a coincidence that you both have the surnames of men that aren't your father! Yeah I'd double barrel the ones you want to keep, only one of the dc's surnames would have to change!

Eevee77 · 28/12/2016 20:59

This is one of the reasons I dislike double barrelled names. It's your name, do what you want.

ParrotPudding · 28/12/2016 20:59

man my comment was light hearted. I agree that telling dd about name change as part of wedding will be exciting for her.Xmas Wink

Oh thank god. I though we had another name diva on our hands.

ParrotPudding · 28/12/2016 21:02

Sort, funny enough our mother's were good friends before and after our arrivals. It's all terribly JK.
I don't want to lose mother's maiden name part of mine as it came from my grandad whom was one of the few stable and loving influences on my life.

OP posts:
ParrotPudding · 28/12/2016 21:07

Is a name diva a thing?? I feel that with all the surnames and middle names I have blessed my children with that I would excel at name diva-ing. Grin my future mil would love it

Oh yes it's a thing.
