Why do older American women disfigure their faces?

notsmelliesagain · 28/12/2016 18:35

I watched the first episode of Real Marigold Hotel on Tour - Florida today.
It was excellent.
But, wtaf have those American women done to their faces? and how can they possibly think they look good, or younger? Do they have different mirrors to the rest of us?
How can their surgeons possibly think they've done a good job?
Miriam and Clarissa actually looked younger and more attractive in comparison.

44.20 onwards.

Ahem - I meant of course that not having work done is my way of way of giving ageism the finger.

Kennington · 30/12/2016 11:37

A smooth forehead and a wrinkled chin looks wonky.
It is obvious all over the place. The madness has to stop.

brasty · 30/12/2016 12:16

Spend your money having fun, rather than on botox and fillers.

MrsJayy · 30/12/2016 12:24

Women are bombarded with comments of wow you look great for or you dont look how are women meant to respond to these comments ?

I can't see an answer to it.
An older woman should be complimented for leading a full life or for life long learning
Not on how young she looks. As if getting older is a disease and something to be ashamed of and fixed.

I always smile and say 'thank you' when I'm told I don't look my age because I know it is kindly meant. But inwardly I'm thinking, 'horseshit'. Because it is. I'd much rather they just told me I looked good or well or that they liked my shoes or whatever.

Nellyphants · 30/12/2016 12:36

I'm often told I don't look my age, late 40s. I think it's meant to be a compliment. I can't even say thank you because what am I thanking them for? I just smile then I get 'no but really....' BTW I'm not deluded I look my age

MrsJayy · 30/12/2016 12:39

I agree there is nothing wrong with getting older, looking older but anti aging creams, potions injections even shampoo Confused is telling us different. I buy into the anti aging by dying my hair as if grey hair is the worst it isn't but I'm to vain to let it come in like it is supposed to.

HopeClearwater · 30/12/2016 12:43

Women have plastic surgery because they are relentlessly scrutinised and criticised about their appearance

Yes, and often by each other. MailOnline 'sidebar of shame' illustrates that nicely, with its overwhelmingly female readership. That's what happens in a patriarchy where we are in competition for the men.

Better to opt out of all this shit altogether as Floisme suggests upthread.

faffalotty · 30/12/2016 12:47

I find MM fabulous and terrifying! We need to see more older, confident women in the public eye.

Her mischievous smile really is beautiful

RedNoseRumble · 30/12/2016 12:59

Haven't read through the thread yet but did anyone watch Eamon and Ruth on the billionaire present programme the other night?

I thought Eamon looked odd and couldn't put my finger in it. His face looked a bit plastic looking, you could see it more when him and Ruth were I the same shit, Ruth looked natural, Eamon looked like he'd had something done?

RedNoseRumble · 30/12/2016 13:00

*in the same shot!! Not shit!

MistressMaisie · 30/12/2016 13:02

I don't think Diana Rigg has had work done on her face.
I think she may have been a smoker. She looks better than the plastic faced brigade.

noeffingidea · 30/12/2016 13:26

As far as I know Sharon Stone is also 'aging naturally'. She looks terrific IMO.
Yes too much work does lead to an odd unatural appearance. There seems to be a tipping point where a little bit looks good but too much makes the person look worse.
Someone mentioned Madonna upthread, Imo she actually looks scary at times. Another example is Nigella Lawson, she definitely had the Michael Jackson look for a while there.
Of course it is up to the individual to do what they want to their own faces and bodies, though surgeons who do bad and extreme surgery (such as Pete Burns) should face investigations and possible prosecution. Again, IMO.

YourFace · 30/12/2016 13:33

Some of the ladies (in the programme), had amazing looking faces which didn't match their necks/arms, etc. Unless you are going to plastic surgeonise your entire body, it's going to look odd.

The Botox that the chef lady had done looked natural enough though. I couldn't see a massive difference.

Is Kate Moss still natural? I always thought her wrinkles looked sexy and characterful.

ginghamstarfish · 30/12/2016 13:49

I find it all a bit sad, and while I understand what PPs have said about wanting to fit into your social group, still a pity that some people cannot bear to age naturally without resorting to the knife etc. There is so much we can all do with hair, makeup, styling etc, male and female alike, to look the best we can at the age we are. I would not want to belong to any social group like those which expected me to jump on the surgery bandwagon.
Courteny Cox - well that's just tragic, she was so beautiful and would have naturally aged well with her lovely bone structure. Same for Madonna and plenty of others. If I was in their shoes I would be content with the many millions of dollars I had, get out of the public eye and retire gracefully.

Floisme · 30/12/2016 13:52

I like to think you can still enjoy playing with your appearance without buying into the anti ageing nonsense. So here's my number one style crush Bet no-one tries telling Dame Vivienne she doesn't look her age Wink

Why do older American women disfigure their faces?
Deadsouls · 30/12/2016 13:55

It's so depressing that there is still this cultural attitude toward women aging. And I'm guilty too, so I'm not excluding myself from judging other women on this or that, or she looks older, or she looks good for her age.

DontEatTheSweets · 30/12/2016 13:57

I Wonder if it's sometimes the combination of TV lighting and TV makeup that gives some celebs that plastic'y fake look.

CountFosco · 30/12/2016 14:04

It's just the next step isn't it? People wear uncomfortable clothes, makeup, dye their hair. It's all part of the same continuum. I think it looks terrible, but in the same way as most people don't look great with dyed hair or with too much makeup or in stupidly high heels.

Floisme · 30/12/2016 14:08

See I don't think it is all part of the same continuum. There's enjoying clothes, fashion, make up and messing around with your appearance - all of which I do. And there's trying to look younger. It's not easy to disentangle the two and I don't always manage it myself but I do think they're two separate things.

nocampinghere · 30/12/2016 14:10

i think it's like when you have spots you do everything you can to get rid of the spots, and you don't care if your skin is dry or flaky or whatever as long as it is spot free.
same with wrinkles - they're not focusing on the overall effect, just getting rid of the wrinkles = youthful.
it's also a case of what you get used to. i lived in LA for a bit, it does become "normal". when i came home i did think everyone looked very grey/ashen faced and knackered for a bit.

DontEatTheSweets · 30/12/2016 14:15

The thing I find odd is that there is strong belief that woman have plastic surgery because 'society' demands women stay youthful and pretty as they age and yet it seems like everyone who actually get plastic surgery says they are only doing it for themselves.

I could afford plastic surgery and I think a neck lift and eyelid procedure would improve my looks but I still wouldn't have it done as I don't care enough. If I could have it done instantly, painlessly and without any after effects then I'd have it done.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 30/12/2016 14:20

American women, yup. Seen plenty of clones in some golf clubs we went to in Cali. However, they hardly are the only ones to do this. Have you seen libanese women? They have a beautiful legacy of features with character and strong beauty, and they throw it all away with tiny upturned noses and over plumped lips and cheeks. What a waste.

Dowser · 30/12/2016 14:44

Well I'm the same age as Sharon osbourne...okay I'm 6 months older but there's a world of difference between the two of us. I look much older in a natural kind of way.
I'm also the same age as rosemary shrager and I think I can say with confidence that I look a few years younger but then she dresses very old fashioned so I don't think she helps herself.
She seems to be having a good time so she's probably not bothered.

I'd like to know about facial yoga although I suspect it's too late for that and I wouldn't keep,it up anyway
